APPLE’S iPad has trumped Amazon and Sky to be crowned top Gadget of the Year, it was announced today.
The iPad beat the Amazon Kindle and Sky 3D to win both Gad-get of the Year and Readers’ Gadget of the Year in the 2010 Stuff Gadget Awards.
Readers also voted in their droves for Microsoft’s controller-free, motion-sensitive gaming system, Xbox Kinect, which took Innovation of the Year. Stuff magazine editor and judge Fraser Macdonald said: ‘The iPad’s success was by no means pre-ordained. It’s expensive and functionally limited. ‘But it is also quite gloriously indispensable and only making itself more so with the increasing number of apps and accessories. To see it is to want it, and that’s why it’s our gadget of the year.’
Microsoft’s motion-sensor gaming system Xbox Kinect won readers’ votes for Innovation of the Year.
The annual awards recognise the best consumer technology released in the past year and are decided by expert judges and readers.
Apple’s iPhone4 won Phone of the Year, while the iPodTouch, was voted ‘Portable Entertainment Gadget of the year’, thanks to its powerful hardware, Wi-Fi and the huge range of affordable games available from the App Store.
In two new categories, the Web App of the Year title went to film library LoveFilm, while personal fitness trainer MiCoach won Mobile App of the Year.
Sony won three awards, Camera of the Year with the Sony NEX-5, Home Entertainment Gadget of the Year for the Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc player and TV of the Year for the HX903.
The iPod Touch was voted Portable Entertainment Gadget of the Year for its powerful hardware, Wi-Fi and range of affordable games available from Apple’s App Store.
Fourteen of the 17 awards were decided by Stuff magazine’s panel of judges, while the remaining three were voted for by consumers and readers of Stuff magazine.
http://www.incgamers.com/News/25938/microsoft-responds-to-kinect-stock-shortageFollowing news that ASDA and many other stores are concerned over stock shortages for Kinect, Microsoft has responded by claiming it is ‘working hard to ensure stock is available throughout Christmas’.
Earlier this week, ASDA warned its customers to buy a Kinect ‘as early as possible’ on Wednesday to avoid disappointment, but Microsoft has told IncGamers it is ‘shipping units as fast as we can’.
Microsoft spokesman Dominic Carey told IncGamers: “It’s an exciting time to be in the entertainment industry and we’re thrilled to have brought Kinect for Xbox 360 to market this week. Consumers have shown exceptional appetite for Kinect and we are continuing to work with our retail partners to bring the Kinect experience to homes around the world.
“As you may not know, we have a global team building & shipping units as fast as we can and we will continue to work hard to ensure that stock is available throughout the Christmas season for hundreds of thousands of families to enjoy this year.”
http://www.electronictheatre.co.uk/...red-on-a-saturday-afternoon-play-kinect-nakedYes, the rather unambiguous headline of this piece leaves little to the imagination, but so too does the latest videogame project from Nuts magazine. In addition to the promotional activity for the forthcoming launch of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood that Electronic Theatre reported on earlier this week, I’d like to put you in the direction of a rather titillating new feature. One that’s most certainly for adult eyes only.
In a feature entitled ‘The Naked Nuts Girl Kinect Challenge’, the official website for Nuts magazine, the UK's best-selling men's weekly, has pitted to fine examples of womanly form against one another in an attempt to discover whether the full-body motion-controller performs as well when playing naked as when fully clothed. In a particularly overbearing example of male chauvinism, Daisy and Porchia prove that it does in fact make absolutely no difference how much flesh you show – except perhaps when playing against male competition of course.
Of course, following the popularity of the semi-nude Wii Fit videos that circulated the internet in 2008, it would have been easy to predict that such materials would eventually be made available online. While I feel compelled to state that the video or material contained within is in no way endorsed by Electronic Theatre, I am equally confident that many of our audience will find the presentation appealing.
You can find the full video - suitable for adults only - right here, and Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest gaming promotions from Nuts magazine.
http://www.tqcast.com/2010/11/13/kinect-vs-gran-turismo-5-is-the-real-war-sorry-ps-move/After months of predictions and speculations on what would be a Holiday PlayStation Move and Kinect war, the war is slowly fading away thanks to Microsoft’s marketing scheme. The real war is no longer between motion gaming, it’s Kinect vs. Gran Turismo 5, end of story.
Sure Microsoft had to put in half a million billion dollars to properly market Kinect, but hey, they have that kind of money to spare, so why not sell the brand? Surely 500 million dollars would go a far way when you consider not only the Kinect Unit, but also; the games, 360 consoles and anything else Xbox branded being sold, thanks to the marketing.
So, where did the PlayStation Move marketing and idea go wrong? Some may say it didn’t go wrong, but come on, look at the Kinect numbers and no controller idea. For starters; Sony followed on the footsteps of a 4 year idea set by Nintendo — (motion controllers). Yes, don’t pretend like people haven’t related PS move to the Wii –”it’s like a Wii huh?”And Kevin Butler, well he can only do so much on his own, we predicted (here) that earlier this year, he needs celebrity help and apparently, 500 million dollars. look at Microsoft and Justin Beiber.
But the Sony brand is still in the battle this holiday season and although it might not be with motion gaming, there is a game and only one game that Sony will sell consoles this Holiday season. What game has everybody going crazy? The game is none other than Gran Turismo 5. With a new confirmed release date of November 24, you better believe that Gran Turismo 5 is going to be the game to break selling records this Holiday season, sure Kinect is projected to sell 5 million this year, but Sony’s claim of Gran Turismo being the most anticipated game of the decade can motivate their marketing to unleash the beast! Expect big marketing for GT5 soon, if not already released; it’s Sony’s expected, yet unexpected, secret weapon.
Cool factor vs. use factor: Can afford only one? Go with PlayStation Move. Kinect points to gaming's future but has too many caveats that lead to costs.
