Meet Killer Instinct Season 2’s Maya and Her Deadly Daggers

At Tokyo Game Show this week, Killer Instinct fans will get hands-on for the first time with Season 2’s Maya, the badass monster hunter wielding the ancient daggers “Temperance” and “Vengeance.” Maya is the second character to be revealed for Season 2, with TJ Combo from the original Killer Instinct confirmed at E3 last June. You can check out Maya in action and a tease of the next character in the video above.

First seen back in the day in Killer Instinct 2, Maya’s fast-paced “blade juggling” combat style lets her power up her daggers the more they’re blocked, leading to increasingly devastating attacks and mixups against her opponents. You’ll need to be careful when playing her though -- if she loses a blade, her powers are diminished until she can recover it.

Of course, if you don’t just happen to be at TGS in Japan this week, you won’t have to wait long to get your hands on Killer Instinct: Season 2 for Xbox One. The game officially launches on Oct. 15, but Microsoft Studios and Iron Galaxy are giving fans a special way to get in on the action early.

Here’s the rundown: On September 23, the same day that Killer Instinct: Season 1 arrives on retail disc ($19.99/£16.99/€19.99), we’re also opening up pre-purchase of the Killer Instinct: Season 2 Ultra Edition for fans who can’t wait to get their fight on. Pre-purchasing the Season 2 Ultra Edition gets you instant access to TJ Combo, plus the full version of Killer Instinct 2 Classic, 3 weeks before the official launch of Season 2.

Once October 15 arrives, Season 2 will officially launch with a completely revamped interface and eight new fighters, starting with TJ Combo and Maya at launch and a character per month after that. As always, the base game is a free download via Xbox Live. Additional Season 2 fighters will roll out on a monthly basis and can be purchased individually for $4.99/£3.99/€4.99.

In the same manner as Season 1, Killer Instinct: Season 2 for Xbox One will feature two value bundles for purchase:

Killer Instinct: Season 2 – Ultra Edition ($39.99/£34.99/€39.99)
Eight fighters, starting with TJ Combo and Maya on October 15,, with a new fighter arriving each month.
Alternate costumes and accessory packs for the Season 2 characters, featuring costumes designed by Kevin Bayliss, Art Director for the original Killer Instinct arcade games
Killer Instinct 2 Classic, a perfect port of the 1996 arcade game with full multiplayer support over Xbox Live and 1000 Gamerscore to earn
Ultra Edition buyers this season will get early access to characters and customization items before the Combo Breaker Pack or individual purchasers

Killer Instinct: Season 2 – Combo Breaker Pack ($19.99/£16.99/€19.99)
Eight fighters, starting with TJ Combo and Maya on October 15, with a new fighter arriving each month.

The Textual Stream: 10/3/14 (Read 1985 times)

Hello everyone, and welcome to the textual stream for October 3rd… 12 DAYS FROM S2 LAUNCH!

This week we’re focusing on UI and fight titles and how things are changing in S2.

Fight Challenges (Titles)

FightChallenges.png

As we talked about last week, the new progression system that launches with Season 2 allows you to earn all character unlocks regardless of how you like to play KI. Fight Challenges (formerly known as titles) now contribute XP to your character and player levels every time you earn one.

Here’s some of the highlights of the new fight challenges system:
All Fight Challenges now earn you XP every time you complete a rank in one.
Fight Challenges such as special moves and aerial attacks now progress by executing them, not only when they successfully connect. Numbers required on the challenges have been adjusted to take this into account.
Character-specific Fight Challenges like combo breakers award XP that goes both to your individual character level and your overall player level.
General Fight Challenges like total matches played award XP to your player level only.
The total XP you can earn from completing all of a character’s Fight Challenges alone will net you over 50% of the XP to reach a character’s maximum level!

So now the one bummer in all of this – we have to reset the levels of all S1 Fight Titles and Trials. However, the things you have already earned in S1 will NOT be reset. This includes Concept Art, Player Taunts, Skins, and Profile Icons. When you boot up S2, you will automatically be awarded the S2 Trials and Fight Challenges that are associated with those items, which means you will immediately be awarded the items plus XP for your player level and character levels for any of these you’ve already done. This is why we want everyone to spend their KP NOW.

We want everyone to be able to get to max level with every character, and one way we’re doing that is by adjusting the numbers on some of the Fight Challenges that were rather… epic… last season. For example the final (10th tier) old Fight Tile for a character’s Ultra required performing 3000 Ultras. That’s well over 30 hours of actual in-game time. In the new system, the final level of the Ultra Fight Challenge requires 200 Ultras to complete the 10th tier. This is more obtainable while still requiring a dedicated effort to obtain.

Level unlocks & KI Gold

I talked about this last week, but I’d like to reiterate that KI Gold is a cash-only currency that allows you to skip getting to a level to unlock an accessory or skin. You in no way have to use KI gold to get anything, except the alternate costumes and premium accessory sets you don’t already own.

You’ll notice in the image below that there’s room for a lot more content for Jago… expect a bunch to be filled in over the course of the season!

Note: Jago's badge list in the image above is showing both player and character level rewards.

Teases!

The launch trailer will be released Monday the 13th or Tuesday the 14th. It contains things you’ve not seen before, and does show the two additional characters from KI1/2 that are returning this season!
