Breaking: THQ Closes Multiple Studios
Breaking: THQ Closes Multiple Studios Publisher THQ is making significant staff cuts to its internal development studios, according to information obtained by Gamasutra and another media site, with Paradigm Entertainment reportedly being closed and Juice Games seeing a workforce reduction of about a third.
Dallas-based Paradigm Entertainment was acquired from Atari in 2006; since becoming part of THQ it has released only one game, last year's Stuntman: Ignition under the THQ brand. Gamasutra's sources claim that the layoffs, affecting the entire studio, were instituted today.
UK publication Develop also claims that UK-based studio Juice Games, developer of the Juiced racing game franchise, is seeing notable cuts -- though the studio will remain in operation.
With THQ's quarterly financial report set to release this Wednesday, it is likely that the cuts -- potentially along with additional ones at the publisher's other studios -- will be confirmed in a matter of days, although the publisher declined to address the reports today.
"Right now that's a rumor. We have no comment on that," said a THQ representative when contacted by Gamasutra regarding the matter.
[UPDATE: Gamasutra has also learned that Los Angeles-area THQ studio Mass Media has been completely closed. The developer had not had an announced title since being acquired by THQ in early 2007, although CEO Brian Farrell noted at the time that the company was particularly keen on utilizing Mass Media's "platform development tools".
In addition, weblog Kotaku has noted that the company's interactive studio map also now lacks Helixe, the Burlington, MA-based studio that specialized in Nintendo handheld work and last shipped the DS version of De Blob.
Also now closed, as confirmed by an internal THQ email seen by Gamasutra, are Santa Clara, CA-based Locomotive Games, which was most recently notable for Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed on the Wii, and Seattle-based Sandblast Games, which has just completed work on Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon. In addition, Phoenix, Arizona-based Rainbow Studios has seen unspecified amounts of layoffs.]
HD Konsolen FTW!!1!1!!![]()

I want to take this opportunity to update you all on some important actions we are taking to best position THQ for future profitability and growth.
As you know, the past year has been a challenging one for THQ, and the video game industry is changing rapidly. We are responding aggressively to both changing market dynamics within the video game sector and the impact of today's difficult economic environment. Over the past several weeks, we have completed a new strategic plan for THQ and presented it to our board of directors. The plan was initiated by me and developed by the executive committee in close collaboration with senior members of our product development and publishing organizations.
The new plan will result in substantial changes to our product strategy and pipeline. Our goal is to ensure that we have the right resources behind the products and product categories that represent the biggest opportunities for THQ.
As a result of this new plan, we have discontinued a number of projects from external developers, as well as certain projects within our internal THQ studios. In a number of cases, the cancellation of a project means that the THQ studio working on that project will be closed. Specifically, we have closed Helixe, Sandblast Games, Locomotive, Mass Media and Paradigm studios. We have also reduced staffing at Juice Games and Rainbow Studios as a result of our product realignment. Our senior PD and HR teams are on the ground at each of the affected studios today, meeting with the employees to discuss severance packages and outplacement services, as well as potential opportunities on other THQ products.
While the actions we are taking are difficult, we believe they are a necessary step toward returning THQ to profitability. We are confident that the product pipeline we have outlined in our strategic plan positions us to win in the video game marketplace. We also remain very confident in our internal development capabilities, as evidenced by the strong critical and commercial success of Saints Row 2 and de Blob.
I encourage each of you to listen to our Q2 FY 2009 earnings call this Wednesday as I take investors through both the trends that are affecting our business and the manner in which we are realigning our business to best compete.
I thank you for your continued focus during this challenging time, and I look forward to sharing more details about our strategic plan with you in the near future.
Brian
The Wall Street Journal says that following the recent hits to EA stock the time is right for Disney to make a move.
The Wall Street Journal (thanks Kotaku) reports or should we says suggests that Disney should make a monumental move and buy mega-publisher EA.
Why exactly does The Wall Street Journal have this advice? There's a number of reasons. Firstly, EA's stock has taken a big hit over recent weeks meaning its price has also fallen significantly. Secondly, the Disney-owned ESPN would benefit the Madden NFL series and Disney could cut some of its $200 million it spends on video game development by moving the projects over to EA studios.
Kotaku also notes that there could also be some lucrative intellectual property sharing, with the likes of Mirror's Edge and Dead Space potential Disney Pictures projects. Disney could also send its IP in the direction of EA - future Pixar titles for example.
