Das ist absolutes Glück.Das ist Wirtschaftstaktik...
Das ist absolutes Glück.
Nochmal als Grafik:Microsoft will report lower than expected earnings and will layoff 5000 employees to save costs. The Entertainment and Devices Division posted an operating profit of $151 million for the quarter.
Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $16.63 billion for the second quarter ended Dec. 31, 2008, a 2% increase over the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.94 billion, $4.17 billion and $0.47, declines of 8%, 11% and 6%, respectively, compared with the prior year.
Client revenue declined 8% as a result of PC market weakness and a continued shift to lower priced netbooks. However, strong annuity licensing drove Server & Tools revenue growth of 15%. Entertainment and Devices revenue grew 3% driven by strong holiday demand for Xbox 360 consoles with a record 6 million units sold in the quarter.
In light of the further deterioration of global economic conditions, Microsoft announced additional steps to manage costs, including the reduction of headcount-related expenses, vendors and contingent staff, facilities, capital expenditures and marketing. As part of this plan, Microsoft will eliminate up to 5,000 jobs in R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT over the next 18 months, including 1,400 jobs today. These initiatives will reduce the companys annual operating expense run rate by approximately $1.5 billion and reduce fiscal year 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million.
Economic activity and IT spend slowed beyond our expectations in the quarter, and we acted quickly to reduce our cost structure and mitigate its impact, said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. We are planning for economic uncertainty to continue through the remainder of the fiscal year, almost certainly leading to lower revenue and earnings for the second half relative to the previous year. In this environment, we will focus on outperforming our competitors and addressing our cost structure.

Earlier last month, Take-Two, publishers of Bioshock and Grand Theft Auto, announced that the PS3 had been their biggest source of income, with 35% of their revenue coming from the platform.
It seems this may becoming trend, as UbiSoft is reporting a similar story. So far for the fiscal year of 2008, 21% of the publisher's sales have come from the PS3. Of the three home consoles, that is the largest percent, with Microsoft's XBox 360 trailing at 20% and the Wii at 15%. This is quite a mix up from the 2007 fiscal year, where the 360 actually had the highest amount of sales out of all platforms at 25%.
This may, in part, be to UbiSoft's PS3 exclusive Haze. Though the title was meet poorly critically, it performed reasonably commercially. However, UbiSoft also published Naruto: Broken Bond, a 360 exclusive, that has sold nearly 400,000 copies to date.
UbiSoft is expecting to meet their financial goals for the fiscal year of 2008, with Tom Clancy's HAWX releasing for the PS3, 360, and PC in the final quarter of the fiscal year.
Auch Ubisoft und Take-Two verdienen ihr Geld mit der PS3:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-job-cuts-unlikely-to-affect-games-divisionSony job cuts unlikely to affect games division
Sony Computer Entertainment has told GamesIndustry.biz that the cost cutting measures announced by Sony Corporation today are least likely to affect the games departments.
As detailed this morning, the electronics division is the worst hit of all Sony divisions, with the closure of the manufacturing plant in Ichinomiya in Japan, and a 30 per cent reduction in headcount planned for TV design operations.
A slide from Sony's corporate presentation this morning stated that there are planned headcount reductions for the games, movie and pictures divisions - without going into further detail - and prompting speculation that jobs were to go in videogame departments.
However, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has informed staff internally that the JPY 250 billion (USD 2.8 billion / EUR 2.1 billion) cost-cutting measures will not include a reduction in games staff, as previously stated last month.
"This is still the case. He has just sent a message to employees here to that effect," said a spokesperson for Sony.
"As was the case with the previous Sony restructuring announcement this mainly concerns our electronics business."
As part of a revised earnings forecast, where Sony now expects a loss of JPY 150 billion (USD 1.68 billion / EUR 1.29 billion) for the financial year ending March 2009, the company's games division is expected to increase losses by approximately JPY 30 billion (USD 337 million / EUR 258 million). Half of that loss is due to adverse currency fluctuations, the other half lower than expected sales, said Sony.
Hardware sales expectations for the year ended March 2009 remain unchanged for the PlayStation 3 the company still expects to sell 10 million units.
However, Sony has dropped estimates for sales of both the PSP and PlayStation 2 by one million, to 15 million units and 8 million units respectively.
Uncertain economic conditions in emerging markets have hampered sales of the stalwart PlayStation 2, said Sony, while PSP estimates have been reduced to a previous forecast.
