At this weekends Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival, the team revealed that we will be traveling to the land of Othard in the Stormblood expansion.

During the keynote address, it was revealed that Samurai would be the newest Job to the games repertoire, and that we would be on our way to free Doma, as well as Ala Mhigo, from Garlean control.

A new batch of high quality screenshots and artwork have hit the web, check them out below:

Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Frankfurt – Keynote Summary: Samurai, Othard revealed

This year’s Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Frankfurt, Germany has kicked off and the opening keynote with director/producer Naoki Yoshida pulled no punches.

We’ve got a summary of the keynote below for all the major details that dropped. Have a look:
Stormblood

The extended, final opening for Stormblood was shown, which features the duel between the Warrior of Light and the Lady in Red. Later, it cuts to the world map where we are taken east word into the lands of Othard — specifically the city of Kugane. Here we see the occupying Garlean Empire chase down a new character garbed in red. The man is a samurai, and makes quick work of them before the camera pans out to reveal the cityscape. A hawk flies along the streets and up to a waiting Yugiri, accompanied by another samurai named Gosetsu.

The world map has been expanded to show the Three Great Continents: Aldenard in the west, Ilsabard in the north, and Othard in the east. This map will be included in the Collector’s Edition of Stormblood.

Nobuo Uematsu will return to compose the main theme, which is called “Revolutions.” He says this song is more powerful than Answers and Dragonsong and is meant to represent the weakness and strength of humanity. He also describes Susan Calloway as the voice of Hydaelyn, which is why she will return yet again to sing the expansion’s theme.

We will not be liberating just Ala Mhigo, but Doma as well. Yugiri will return as a major character in this expansion, and Gosetsu will be getting an introduction in Patch 3.5: The Far Edge of Fate – Part II in March.

New Job: Samurai

Samurai is the newest Job you will be able to take on in Stormblood. It is a melee DPS (damage dealer) that uses katana as weapons. Like the Heavensward jobs, there will be no associated class to level beforehand. Like Red Mage, you will start at Level 50, though this seems to be a tentative decision by the team at this point.

The Samurai will engage enemies up close with their katana and “single-handedly deal massive damage.” They will learn “Iai” techniques and other traditional Far Eastern swordplay. Your abilities will involve the mastery of “Sen” and its three forces: “Setsu” (Snow), “Getsu” (Moon), and “Ka” (Flower). You will store energy in your katana and unleash it in special attacks.

Also like Red Mage, the Samurai’s job quests will begin in Eorzean areas, so you can actually unlock this job before getting to the new expansion content.

New City: Kugane

The port town of Kugane is on the island chain of Hingashi in the Far Eastern reaches of Eorzea. It has a strict isolationist policy and only open to trade vessels. Violent acts are strictly prohibited within the town’s walls.

New Areas: Othard

We were shown several new locations in Othard including The Ruby Sea — an inland sea that is home to the Kojin beast tribe. They are skilled traders who will deal with all races, and have built comfortable settlements under the sea. They believe that unique gods(kami) reside in all things.

They are collectors of treasures housing powerful deities. However, the Kojin revere one god above all others: The Lord of the Revel – Susano. This will be an original primal to Final Fantasy XIV like Ravana, not a summon from the series past.

New dungeons were shown, one that Yoshida thought looked like a ship graveyard.

Another new area we were shown was Yangxia — where Doma is located. This is one of the cities we will be liberating in the Stormblood expansion. The Azim Steppe is an expansive plain that is new to Final Fantasy XIV; it’s where the Auri tribes live.

New Housing District: Shirogane

Shirogane will be the next housing district in Stormblood. However, it’s not going to be open right away because the team wants you to focus on the story and battle content and not worrying about housing plots. Once the time is right, they will add plots in the new area as well as a feature to move your existing estate to the new district.

Players will also be able to enjoy double the amount of furnishings able to be placed in an estate — that goes for small, medium, and large. One catch though: if you’re still using a 32-bit operating system, you should look into upgrading or all the furnishings may not appear.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood arrives on June 20th (tentative) for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Mac.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.55a arrives on February 28th

During the Letter from the Producer Live segment of this weekend’s Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Frankfurt, Germany, director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that Patch 3.55a will release on February 28th.

This new patch will include new Anima Weapon story quests, but Yoshida assures that it will be easy compared to previous steps. There will also be a new type of content for crafters and gatherers that involves the NPC Zhloe Aliapoh in Idyllshire. You’ll come to understand her plight and undertake quests where you’ll be able to make things for NPCs to wear — its a quest line that the team wants to extend into the Stormblood expansion.

Proto-Ultima also be Final Fantasy XIV’s first ever Alliance-based trial, and will reward accessories with an item level of 270. However, the way to access this fight is being kept secret — we won’t even know how from the patch notes. Yoshida teased us to look forward to it.

The Feast will get a new map and a sudden death mode, as well as some new items and adjustments. Season 3 will close and Pre-Season 4 will begin as well.

As for why this Patch is “3.55a”, Yoshida explains that they had originally planned to include the Diadem’s new Exploratory Missions, but there was a critical bug at the last minute. This content will be released in Patch 3.55b in early March, and he apologized to players for the delay.

Players will also be able to redeem the Tidus and Yuna outfits available from purchasing the Fan Festival live streams, GARO collaboration gear can be reclaimed from the Calamity Salvager, and buffs will be put on the drop rates of the Sophia and Zurvan lanner whistles.

Final Fantasy XIV is getting a PlayStation 4 Pro patch

Final Fantasy XIV is the latest title set to receive support for Sony’s upgraded PlayStation 4 Pro hardware, producer/director Naoki Yoshida revealed during a post-Fan Festival press conference today.

With the departure of the PS3 version, it’s only natural the team would consider expanding upward with additional specs at hand. “Rather than using the PS4 Pro’s power to adapt to say 4k display, we’re thinking of using it for game performance,” said Yoshida. “We’ve begun work on a Pro patch and hope to have details soon.”

And what about other potential platforms? All the same, Yoshida wants to see the game on as many as possible but with certain caveats. “The one condition we have is that we can continue the cross world matching going. If we can clear that, then a version on [Nintendo] Switch is something we’d consider.”

Blitzball will make a comeback in Final Fantasy XIV’s Stormblood expansion

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Frankfurt, Germany, director/producer Naoki Yoshida fielded questions from the press about the upcoming Stormblood expansion. Since the expansion would feature swimming and diving for the first time, would there be a chance that Blitzball cound return?

The answer: Yoshida confirmed that the team is currently planning the addition of the minigame, however, it may not look and play exactly like you remember from Final Fantasy X. He went on to say that there are a lot of challenges the team must take on to make it work. Yoshida says he believes that players grew bored quickly in the FFX version, and FFXIV’s version will include MMORPG elements. The end result might be something that’s further away from what peoples’ current image of Blitzball is.

(Note: In a previous update we cited that the minigame was being “deliberated” but we can now share the team has concrete plans to add the game. Yoshida says the team is trying to find a good balance between what people remember and something that works well within the MMORPG genre.)

Blitzball, as some of you may already know, is an underwater sport that marries soccer, rugby, and water polo. Players on a team can move the ball up and down the field using a variety of turn-based commands. Team members can level up with experience earned in matches to get better in their various positions and learn new techniques.

FFXIV has reintroduced several classic minigames in the past, including Final Fantasy VIII‘s Triple Triad and Final Fantasy VII‘s chocobo racing — all with a twist that makes them a bit different than their original counterparts.

Nobuo Uematsu teases new song “Revolutions” for Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood

First there was “Answers”. Then there was “Dragonsong”. Now: “Revolutions”. A fitting title for a theme set to lead the charge into Final Fantasy XIV‘s upcoming expansion, Stormblood. Fans got to hear their first taste of this new song during today’s Fan Festival opening keynote celebrations where composer Nobuo Uematsu shared a clip and some insight on its development.

“Dragonsong” was more of a ballad so this time Uematsu wanted to create something with a little more raw power behind it. Rather than the feel of the song coming from a benevolent god, “Revolutions” is told from a more human perspective. With Susan Calloway cemented as the voice of Final Fantasy XIV, Uematsu believes she will be able to capture the human spirit just as well as the sentiments of Hydaelyn as seen in the game’s previous two main themes.

Uematsu also noted the popularity of concerts such as Distant Worlds has allowed fans who don’t necessarily play MMOs to experience FFXIV‘s music – the likes of which continue to receive positive feedback.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood is scheduled to release on June 20 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Mac.

Final Fantasy XIV accepts three Guiness World Records at Frankfurt Fan Festival

At the close of the Letter from the Producer Live broadcast at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Frankfurt, Germany, a special ceremony was held to present three Guinness World Records.

Final Fantasy XIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida accepted the award for the “Longest Credits in a MMO”, and while that got a few chuckles from the crowd, Yoshida explained that this is due in part to the Meteor Survivors who participated in the Legacy Campaign that gave their support to the team to create A Realm Reborn and the game that we have now. All in all, Final Fantasy XIV’s credits last a whopping 98 minutes.

Composer and sound director Masayoshi Soken accepted the next world record for “Most Original Pieces of Music in a Video Game”, where Final Fantasy XIV now has 384 tracks. Soken joked when he accepted the award, as if to ponder “oh, so that’s how many tracks are in the game?”

The final award was presented to Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda on behalf of the entire Final Fantasy franchise. The award “Most Prolific Role-playing Series” represents the 87 titles that now compose the franchise. Matsuda commented that it was an honor to accept the award and that they couldn’t have done it without the fans. He asked for your continuing support in the years to come.

Stormblood Interview with Naoki Yoshida

Following up the first day of Final Fantasy XIV‘s final leg of Fan Festival activities in Frankfurt, producer/director Naoki Yoshida had a chance to sit down for a special Stormblood-themed round-table conference.

Nova Crystallis along with select press from around the world were in attendance for a chat discussing different aspects of the upcoming expansion – including locations and the newly revealed Samurai job class.

Yoshida: Thank you for staying so late for this.

Last October we began our group of Fan Festivals in Las Vegas, and then Tokyo and now our final one here in Frankfurt. With each Fan Fest, we use it to reveal new information about Stormblood. While there are still new things to reveal, we feel like we’ve given you a good idea of what Stormblood will entail.

I know you have a lot of questions, and there may be some things I can’t answer but I’ll try to answer as many as I can in the time we have. I’ve been standing all day in these so I’m going to sit down.

—After this third event, what experience have you gotten from meeting fans from different places?

Yoshida: Having these festivals is for the fans, but it’s for the development team too. It motivates us to see the fans; we use that energy to support us in our future endeavors.

—Lots of the new expansion areas have connections to Japanese culture. How important is it for you to have areas that reflect your own culture? Is there extra pressure while developing these areas?

Yoshida:
When creating these areas like Hingashi and Doma we had it in the back of our minds to create something like Japan. Japan has a very long history but depending on who you ask you’ll get a different version of what that history is. Edo period, post-Edo, pre-Edo etc. However when visually designing Kugane and Hingashi, instead of using one idea, we wanted to meld the different ideas of the Far East to make things unique. We discussed it a lot to make something that’s truly unique. To make one thing clear though, when we talk about Doma and Hingashi, they’re two very different countries with Hingashi on the island and Doma on the continent to the east.

—This time there will only be two jobs. Is there any chance for a new job for the 4.x patches?

Yoshida:
Currently there are no plans for a third job. Of course, there are a lot of people – myself included – who are looking forward to new jobs. Creating an unbalanced job or ruining existing balance is something we don’t want to do. We’ll revamp the system in 4.0, balance it, then maybe we’ll make another job.

—Will there be more cross-server functionality in the future like Linkshells and the friends list?

Yoshida: In fact, the development team is currently working on cross-world friends lists. Hoping for 4.0 but it might not make it. For the rest, there’s no time table but we are doing it.

—Is your Samurai costume comfortable? Do you plan to wear it to work to inspire you team?

Yoshida:
Yes, its very comfortable. In fact, I was only supposed to wear this for the keynote, but because its so comfortable I’ve worn it the whole day. I want to take this home to Japan, but the German team put lots of work into this and so… my staff told me I have to leave it here. If I happen to take it back and wear it at the office, I don’t think my staff would be inspired… they would probably be angry that I was goofing off.

—We saw the implementation of Grand Company platoons. Will those NPCs be available in other content?

Yoshida: The plan for this is already finished and we’re working on the AI for the platoon. As most staff is working on 4.0 content though, it’s on the back burner. Once 4.0 is out we’ll have it done soon after release.

—What are priorities for future Fan Festivals? What are key lessons you’d use from here for a future festival?

Yoshida: Well, we still have day two… (laughs) We’ve been spending the last few days preparing working with the great team here. We’ve learned a lot and had a great first day, but we have to think about day two first. Our next goal is to make our CEO to say “it’s okay to do another Fan Festival.”

—After this extended trailer it seems like a lot of fans forgot about Ala Mhigo. Are you scared Doma will lower the hype for Ala Mhigo?

Yoshida: What we don’t want players to forget is we’ve shown a lot of interesting areas in Ala Mhigo. In addition to the ones in Othard we have plans for Ala Mhigo. Fifty percent of 4.0 will occur in Ala Mhigo.

—Since we’re leaving the PS3 and you can expand upwards with the specs, will you be patching for PS4 Pro support? And will there be support for Nintendo Switch?

Yoshida: Rather than using the PS4 Pro’s power to adapt to say 4k display, we’re thinking of using it for game performance. We’ve begun work on a Pro patch and hope to have details soon. I’ve mentioned this before with Xbox One inquiries – I want the game on as many platforms as possible. The one condition we have is that we can keep the cross-world matching going. If we can clear that, then a version on the Switch is something we’d consider.

—With the addition of swimming, do you see Blitzball in the future of FFXIV?

Yoshida: To be honest, yes we have plans… maybe. The thing is, we’ve run into a few problems. There’s the opinion that if we released it as it was in Final Fantasy X, players might lose interest in it quickly. Then on the team we had the idea of – because we’re an MMO, lets make something that fits with the style of game we have. However if we do that, then we’re going away from the Blitzball people know and expect. We’re trying to find a good mix of both sides. Because we have swimming and diving its natural to get that in the game.

—There’s been talk about introducing a quick leveling potion (jumping potion) and I’d like more details about that.

Yoshida: This is something we’re still debating in the team. We can’t say anything now but we hope to have an announcement soon during a Live Letter.

—Can you tell us more about what’s planned for the battle system revamp?

Yoshida: We’re not going to be rebuilding it from the ground up. We’re concentrating on two things with this revamp. During 3.x, the action rotation for high DPS became very complex. We saw a large gap form regarding DPS from skilled and technical players and more casual players and so we wanted to bring up the bottom.

The second thing is that with FFXIV lots of players use the controller. With the increase in actions, it’s hard for them to use all of the actions available. There aren’t enough ways to use these actions so we’re cutting the number of unused actions and combining similar actions to make the level 70 action number about the same as it is now.

Currently with a lot of the jobs, it’s clear that jobs have to monitor a lot of buff icons. We want to create job specific UIs to alleviate that and make monitoring those things easier. We’re going to balance, adjust, tweak and refine this UI right up to the release, so we probably can’t show you anything until May.

—We’ve seen Doma is in one of the new areas, but we haven’t seen Ala Mhigo. Will players be able to go there? Will it be a field area? An instance?

Yoshdia: Hmm I wonder… to get that answer you’re going to have to first liberate Ala Mhigo because it’s under the control of the Empire. We have something unique in store for you that takes advantage of the MMO genre. We put a heavy focus on the story and think we have something very exiting in store for the liberation of Ala Mhigo.

“Basically, the main concept our team has when making Samurai now is a Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai-type of Samurai.”

—What is the added value to you and the game to have a subscription-based game?

Yoshida: I’ve answered this a lot in the past and it’s a long answer. Please contact our PR team and they’ll hook you up with the answer.

—You chose to make Samurai a DPS instead of a Tank as originally planned…

Yoshida:
It’s a complex answer… it wasn’t like we decided “We want a DPS job; let’s make it Samurai!” It was more of what I envisioned a Samurai character to be. I see a more post-Edo Samurai and that felt like it had to be a DPS type. Basically, the main concept our team has when making Samurai now is a Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai-type of Samurai.

—What makes FFXIV stand out from other MMOs?

Yoshida:
The biggest thing is the speed at which we release major updates, expansions and have Fan Festivals.

—Can we see inconsequential monster encounters have battle time reduced?

Yoshida: We do believe with 3.x that some regular field battles were a little longer than usual so with 4.0 they’ll be shorter.

—We have people coming from all over the world to Fan Festivals like Free Companies or people that met in game. Do you plan to introduce an app that would let players to stay in touch with their friends and groups? Also, what are your plans with PlayStation VR?

Yoshida: We’re currently in development of a new application to help players contact their FC players and friends outside of the game. We wanted it ready for 4.0 – it might not make it, but it will be released soon after.

We’ve tested the VR, but you need 60 FPS if not more to avoid motion sickness. If you wanted to create something that really took advantage of that, you would need content made especially for VR but if you do that you limit it to only those few with VR so we want to spend the time making content for everyone.

We have had some ideas talking to the media about a special room like “Miqo’te Paradise” where you pay $50 and go in and have some fun with Miqo’te. We’ve brought this up with the designers on our team… so far no one has raised their hand saying they want to make it yet.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.56 due out March 28

Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward will see its main scenario come to a conclusion with the launch of Patch 3.56, due out March 28. There, players will gain access to the second part of “The Far Edge of Fate” which promises to bridge the gap going into Stormblood in June.

According to a press release sent out by Square Enix, our story continues as follows: “The Griffin has played his final hand. By harnessing the wrath and despair of his dying countrymen did he give form to a new divinity; by the power of Nidhogg’s eyes and his own mortal demise did he give it life. Only through the swift and desperate action of an Archon was the primal sealed away, but even now this incarnation of vengeance strains to escape its prison of light…”

The company’s also released a set of screenshots, which we’ve included in the gallery below.
