News: The Geography Of Baten Kaitos
New details from Namco on the places you can expect to see in Baten Kaitos.
With details recently emerging on the characters and worlds which will feature in Baten Kaitos, Monolith Soft and Tri-Crescendo's new Gamecube RPG is starting to look very exciting. We now have some more details on the islands that make up the game's floating archipelago world, and a few other locales that the adventure will take place in.
Cebelrai
This is a remote faming village, on the floating continent of Sadal Suud. The adventure begins here, when the lead character, Kalas, awakes with no memory. If that weren't enough trouble, he then runs into his fellow hero, Xelha, who's being pursued by soldiers for some unknown reason.
Kalas' memory loss ties into an interesting bit of world design. In Baten Kaitos, certain people have the ability to house within themselves a departed spirit -- this soul coexists with them and can manifest itself in certain ways. In a sense, the player is that spirit, because Kalas' memory is gone, leaving him with only the spirit to guide him.
Sadal Suud
This continent as a whole is lush and largely unexplored. The current civilization occupies only a few villages and a single large port city Pherkad. At some point in the past, however, the continent was more developed and populated, since it's dotted with the ruins of past settlements.
Pherkad
A stone city on one edge of Sadal Suud, ruled by the feudal lord Rodolfo, a thoroughly dislikable character (he's the fat fellow in the new screens). Pherkad's primary purpose is as a port, linking it to other continents scattered around the skies. Battleships and ferries occupy its harbors, on missions of war or simply carrying passengers to other islands. These airships come in all shapes and sizes, from simple craft meant to carry a few people to opulently-appointed royal liners.
Diadem
One of the ferries from Pherkad travels to Diadem, a larger continent ruled by a powerful king. It's called a "kingdom of the clouds," after the multicolored clouds that swirl around its central heights. The king, Ladekahn, occupies the castle of Elnath in the northern part of the continent, which is closely guarded by his knights -- the inner workings of the castle are thus enfolded in a certain amount of mystery.
Elsewhere, Diadem is populated mainly by fishermen, who pull their living out of the rivers that criss-cross the lower part of the continent. Its more rural areas are thus fairly calm, but the capital city of Sheliak is apparently seeing an unusual increase in the military presence thereabouts.
Namco seem to be releasing more and more info on the game currently, which is to be expected with its Japan release drawing near. There should be more info in the upcoming weeks and we'll have all the info up here just as soon as we know about it.
