Japan - Nintendo released 200,000 DSi units into the wild

Nintendo just launched the DSi in Japan, but they obviously wanted to keep things a bit low-key. In total, Nintendo released 200,000 DSi units to retailers. Sales figures are unknown at this time, but Nintendo already has plans to release an additional 100,000 units into stores later this week. While things were looking a bit slow at first, the reports came in showing that retailers were seeing lines of up to 400 people. If things went well, you can expect Nintendo to talk about the launch later this week.

Nintendo, Nikkei to develop economy-based software for DS

OSAKA, Nov 04, 2008 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) — NTDOY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating — Nintendo Co. (TSE:7974) said that it plans to team with Nikkei Inc. to develop software for its Nintendo DS portable video game devices that make learning about the economy fun.

The software will be designed so that users can learn the basics of the economy — how it works and keywords for understanding it — by tapping on the devices’ touch-screen panels and answering a series of quizzes.

By making the learning process fun, Nintendo hopes the software will attract young people who are interested in the economy.

The DSi - a tale of two eBays

Here in North America, the DSi is selling for quite a high price on eBay. Seeing auctions that end for over $300 is a common occurence. The high pricing might have something to do with the price to import, as well as the lack of any firm DSi launch day in North America.

In Japan, as you can see from the image above, there are plenty of DSi units on eBay. The difference here is, Japanese eBay shoppers are buying their DSis for just slightly over retail price. Anyone looking to make a lot of cash on these is quickly finding out that it isn’t going to happen.

Three awesome-looking Gameloft mobile titles that would be great for DSiWare

In its third quarter financial results released yesterday, mobile games company Gameloft mentioned an interest in releasing titles for the Nintendo DSi’s downloadable games shop, which I’m pretty pumped about!

For those of you unfamiliar with Gameloft, the studio develops and publishes a wide variety of mostly mobile games, from casual titles to releases based on popular video game and media licenses.

Though mobile games have a reputation of, well, sucking, Gameloft’s library has several titles that I’d love to see on DSiWare. Keep in mind that I haven’t actually played them, so I’m not sure if they’re any good, hence why I describe them as awesome looking.

1. The Oregon Trail

Don’t even front; this shit looks all the way live. I sent these screens to JC a while back, and he complained, “These graphics are wasted on mobile titles.”

2. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas

I don’t think these screens really represent the bulk of this mobile title’s gameplay, but they remind me of my favorite tactical shooter, Kemco’s Rescue: The Embassy Mission for NES (here’s my experience with the game as a kid).

3. Brothers In Arms: Art of War

And this looks like a more detailed sequel to my favorite WWII game, Medal of Honor: Infiltrator for GBA. This is what all WWII games on the DS should look like!

Unfortunately, I doubt any of these will ever appear on DSiWare. Looking at what Gameloft has ported to the iPhone, N-Gage, and WiiWare, we’ll probably get titles like Block Breaker Deluxe, Midnight Pool, and Diamond Twister instead. At least I got to talk about Rescue: The Embassy Mission and MOH: Infiltrator.

DSi Hacked to Run Custom

Within days of a release in Japan the DSi has already been torn apart by hackers.

The latest DS revision swept across Japan on November 1st, and although it's brought a fairly long list of new features and upgrades, Nintendo have bumped up security measures to prevent homebrew from being accessed.

However it looks like the first snippets of code have been shown running on the new hardware, revealing potential to continue to run home-made software and fan games on the DSi. The author of YSMenu, Yasu, recently posted up his findings on GBATemp, but has yet to disclose how he went about running custom code. Could flashcarts and homebrew be back up and running again with custom firmware on the DSi?

Nintendo confirms block of R4 on DSi

Nintendo has come out and admitted that the R4 is indeed incompatible with the DSi, but they haven’t said whether this was done on purpose or not. On top of that, they didn’t mention anything about all the other flash carts that have been rendered useless by the DSi. You can be sure that Nintendo did this on purpose, but you’ll never hear them admit to it.
