BioWare Has High Hopes for DS After Sonic

BioWare's Greg Zeschuk recently expressed high hopes for continuing to work on Nintendo's handheld.

The studio recently let loose a new way of playing Sonic, combining his classic speed and platform elements with turn-based combat and stat building. So now that Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is sitting nicely on store shelves it seems that BioWare already has plans and ideas on future DS games.

..we recently released the Sonic handheld game for DS, and we've got other DS plans that we're thinking about these days.

It's quite a bit of stuff. We've a pretty a big plate full of things we're working on. Across the studio we number probably over 400 people.

Nintendo DS Getting Legacy of Ys RPG in US

Atlus is busy preparing a special treat of Nintendo DS fans in North America, packaging not only the first Ys remake, but Ys II as well in one handy DS cartridge...except 'Legacy of Ys: Book I & II' has not been officially announced yet, more a 'leak' has been discovered on US online retailer Gamestop.

Whilst Japan had to make do with buying the 3D remakes of the classic Turbo-Grafx 16 RPGs separately on DS back in March of this year, Atlus has done the wise thing and bundled the two together, with a release temporarily set for 10th February, 2009 (no doubt the finalised date will be included in the official Press Release when it hits)

Below is the overview of the games' stories:

"Stories tell of a land of yore, now shrouded by centuries of time forgotten, called Ys. Despite its great knowledge, endless wealth, and bountiful prosperity, a sudden and unexpected cataclysm devastated the realm. Soon, its memory had faded completely from the minds of man. Centuries later, a young adventurer named Adol set sail to explore the world and leave his mark on history. During his travels, he learned of the tragic tale of Esteria, a once prosperous island now inexplicably engulfed by a crippling storm. Adol plotted a course for the besieged isle, curious to unravel the mystery..."

Some of the key features of this new package are as follows:

Two Legendary RPGs on One Cartridge - Experience two all time classics that helped shape the action RPG genre? Now on a portable system

Upgraded Ys Experience - Behold remastered 3D graphics, a remixed musical score, and new enemies and equipment to discover. Touch control and local wireless multiplayer for up to four people deepen the adventure, while difficulty levels and dual control schemes tailor the experience to the gamer.

The Definitive Story - Available to North American audiences for the first time, this ultimate translation delivers the most substantial version of the famous Ys story ever made.

Mastiff and Renegade Kid Reveal THE ENEMY as the Writers Behind Moon

San Francisco, Calif. - October 23, 2008 - “Are you seeing this, General? - My people are all dead! What the hell did you lead us into here?” - Major Kane.

Mastiff and Renegade Kid are proud to announce that they have teamed up with writers James McDonough and Adam Patyk (Hellboy, Transformers and much more) of THE ENEMY to turn the dark and twisted storyline into something even more ominous.

“Working on Moon has been an absolute blast,” said writer Adam Patyk of THE ENEMY. “The fantastic gameplay and striking graphics are some of the first things you notice about the game, and that played a big role in why we were so excited when Mastiff asked us to get involved in helping to refine the characters and story for Moon.”

Taking place on the cold lunar surface in the year 2058, Moon places gamers in control of Major Kane of the Extra Terrestrial Encounter Organization, who has been summoned to the newly established Lunar Base Alpha to investigate what has been described as a sealed hatch embedded in the surface of the moon. His briefing is interrupted when a hostile force sweeps through the base, annihilating everything and everyone in its path. It is now up to Major Kane to enter the hatch and seek out the truth that lies below the surface of our Moon.

“Without the preconceived notions of an existing franchise, working on Moon gave an opportunity for everyone involved in the game’s production to really work from the ground up and modify characters’ roles and motivations to best serve the story and produce the most entertaining final product,” said Patyk.

“We are definitely excited to have had the opportunity to work with creative minds at THE ENEMY,” said Bill Swartz, Head Woof at Mastiff. “They have been an absolute pleasure to work with and we feel that players will truly appreciate Moon’s rich character development anddeep storyline.”

Drawn to Life Developer Has 2 More for Nintendo DS

It has been revealed that the developed behind both Drawn to Life and Lock's Quest already has two new Nintendo DS titles up its sleeves. Speaking with 5TH Cell's Jeremiah Slaczka, Creative Director and Lead Designer of Lock's Quest, it was confirmed that the company is already hard at work on two more Nintendo DS titles, following success with the two recent releases, Lock's Quest and Drawn to Life: Spongebob Squarepants.
"We're in the middle of two DS games ? both will be announced in the coming months. We're definitely moving to console, but that doesn't mean we're abandoning handheld. We're really open to any platform if the project makes sense for that platform. The DS just happens to be a great platform to make games on."
What is interesting is how no specific system was mentioned, although it would be surprising if something for Wii and/or the WiiWare system was not on the cards.
Would you like to see another Lock's Quest on DS, or perhaps yet another brand new IP from 5TH Cell?

Nintendo DS Proves Strongest for Ubisoft

Ubisoft has released its latest financial document and revealed that the Nintendo DS has been the biggest profit maker for it by far.

Whilst last year's offerings from Ubisoft may have helped to rake in the money, this year appears to be even bigger for the company, mainly thanks to the Nintendo DS. Last year's titles are still going strong, with Assassin's Creed (PS3, 360, DS) now well over five million globally and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 on Wii/DS upwards of a million sales units, whilst Ubisoft is hoping for sales between two-to-three million for Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia (a version of which is to hit DS) and Shaun White Snowboarding (coming to Wii and DS, amongst several other platforms). It is also hoping that the third Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii/DS exclusive) and Tom Clancy's EndWar (also coming to DS) will both surpass a million each with ease. It was also stressed how Ubisoft had sold more games in the UK over the past two weeks on the DS than Nintendo itself, a first in the format's three-plus year history.

Strong sales of Ubisoft's casual line-up (38% of the company's total sales this period), including the likes of UK chart mainstays Imagine Teacher and My Secret World by Imagine, both on DS, as well as PlayZone Sports Party on Wii, have helped the company to state its expectations of hitting roughly ?500 million for the entire of this Fiscal Year, which would be an 11% increase over last year's result.

Below are the breakdowns of where Ubisoft's main sales stem from, as well as what formats are the best performers for its products:

Breakdown of Sales by Geographic Region
1.) Europe - 65%
2.) North America - 29%
3.) Rest of world - 6%

Breakdown of Sales by Platform
1.) Nintendo DS - 39% (sixteen new titles during period)
2.) Xbox 360 - 20% (three new titles)
3.) PlayStation 3 - 20% (three new titles)
4.) Wii - 11% (six new titles)
5.) PC - 6% (six new titles)
6.) PlayStation Portable - 2% (one new titles)
7.) PlayStation 2 - 1% (zero new titles)

"Ubisoft delivered a robust performance in the second fiscal quarter against an uncertain environment. We are carefully and regularly monitoring changes in the economic context in order to factor them into our market forecasts and financial targets. Going forward, we are confident that the video game industry will be able to continue its dynamic growth in 2008 and 2009, buoyed by the increase in the installed base for consoles coupled with the steady influx of new consumers. At the same time, we believe that thanks to the diversity and quality of Ubisoft's games line-up ? which caters to both hardcore and casual gamers ? we are ideally positioned to continue to win market share in the coming years. Holiday 2008 will be another demonstration of this, as we are introducing a gaming experience for everyone."
- Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer.

New DSi Tidbits: Cart Hotswapping, Picture Calendar and More

A feature on Tiny Cartirdge has undearthed some DSi features that have yet to be made widely known. New tidbits on the unique features of the new Nintendo DSi include cart hotswapping, power button functions, daily calendar and more.

First off, it seems players will be able to hotswap cartridges with the new DSi console whilst in the main menu, a feature that previously would have caused a DS or GameBoy to go gaga and force a reset. With the DS having a main menu this attention seems to make a lot of sense, and for the non believers a short video of it in action:

The DSi's power button seems to bring up the DSWare applications menu, much like the home button in current consoles ? it's also said to act as a reset button in DS games.

Those wanting some practical use of the builtin camera can use it as part of a daily calendar album that collates snaps taken day by day into a neat visual diary of things you've paparazzied on the move. On the music front, a pair of visualisations have been shown ? tapping feat in time to your audio and a rotating globe and stars. Snazzy!

The DSi makes its way to hardware-hungry Japan on November 1st 2008 boasting bigger screens, better audio and improved application support

Nicole Goodfellow: We've also just completed Monster Jam 2 and have a few new titles in development at the moment (but I can't give you any specifics yet!)
