WayForward - multiple DSiWare ideas in the works, LIT sequel possible, ‘better than average’ chance of Shantae return

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Matt, Adam, and Sean of WayForward…

NL. We saw in the interview with G4TV where Voldi Way dropped a few hints about a darker DSiWare game that you guys are currently working on. Any chance you might toss a few more tidbits of information our way regarding this title?

MATT: We’ve got a few DSiWare games waiting in the wings. One in particular that’s got a solid internal following and is looking really cool. Adam?

ADAM: It’s still very early in development, but it’s an idea we like that we’re hoping will blossom into a full DSiWare title. It’s essentially a slasher film, but with typically odd WayForward sensibilities on top of that. It’s darker than LIT, but not in an M-rated way. We’re having a lot of fun doing pre-development on it, though, so hopefully we’ll have something creepy to show in the near future.

NL. We hate to ask so soon after LIT’s release, but are there any plans for a LIT sequel down the line?

ADAM: Mark Bozon (the game’s co-designer) and I have had a few talks and we know where a sequel would take the player. The first game was all about Jake locating Rachael, which was the first half of his adventure. Now that he’s found her, what happens next?

NL. Okay we hate to do it, but we must. Is there a better than average chance that we might see a new Shantae title at some point or are you just going to continue to torture us for all eternity?

MATT: Better than average!

ADAM: Tease! The first thing I ever animated for WayForward was Mermaid Shantae spinning around in the water. I’d love to see a Shantae game on the shelves again.

SEAN: We are always in development with something involving Shantae. Always.

Star Wars Battlefront Coming to DS

LucasArts and n-Space are bringing the popular series to DS this fall with Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron.

LucasArts announced today that Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron is heading to DS and is being developed by n-space.
Elite Squadron will feature the same squad-based gameplay as previous titles along with a handful of new features. The series will have multi-level battles where players can start on land, commandeer a vehicle and take it to space, and then come all the way back to the ground.
The DS version will feature numerous character classes and allow players to use a variety of weapons ranging from a blaster to a lightsaber. The game will take place on many of the series' notable planets, including Endor and Hoth, during its 11-mission campaign mode.

It will also feature a couple of four player skirmish modes including Heroes and Villains, which allows players to assume the roles of iconic characters such as Boba Fett, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader.
The game's story puts players in the shoes of X2, a clone trooper made by the Empire from the DNA of a Jedi Master. He rebels and joins the Rebellion instead of executing his intended Order 66. As he fights for the Rebellion, he crosses paths with his clone brother, X1, who chooses a darker path and aids the Empire.
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron is due out this fall and will also be available for PSP.

The Galaxy is Bigger Than Ever With Epic Multi-Level Fronts, Deep Original Story and Hugely Expansive Gameplay Features

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – May 26, 2009 – Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron presents an expanded new take on the classic Star Wars Battlefront® gameplay, resulting in new levels of interaction and excitement in handheld gaming. The massive, galactic campaign will ship this Fall for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and Nintendo DS™. For the first time ever in the Star Wars Battlefront series, players will be able to fight on multi-level battlefronts, on the ground and in space. Players can start the fight on foot, commandeer a vehicle to battle on the ground or dogfight in space, and land their craft and fight on capital starships. The battles waged on each front are all directly effected by the player’s actions, creating a combat experience where every shot fired and every enemy defeated can affect the outcome of a battle on another front. Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron features a deep and engrossing single player campaign that spans the entire Star Wars Saga – and beyond. Gamers assume the identity of X2, a clone trooper created from the DNA of a Jedi Master. Originally tasked with eliminating Jedi during Order 66, X2 decides to leave his blood-stained past behind and joins the Rebellion. X2 isn’t the only Force-sensitive clone, however. X1, his clone brother, chooses a much more sinister path, leading to a confrontation that could determine the fate of both the Empire and the Rebellion. Additionally, players will have at their disposal massive amounts of pick-up and play action for seemingly endless replay value. The PSP provides the deepest customization options ever seen in a Star Wars Battlefront title, allowing players to personalize and build their character with more weapons and items than ever before, including the weapons characters carry into battle, the armor they wear on their backs, their species, gender, appearance and physical strengths. Players can also unlock hundreds of other items and bonuses to help even the odds. On Nintendo DS, players can experience a unique class-based gameplay experience that allows them to outfit their characters with pre-determined weapon armaments, including heavy weapons, blasters and even lightsabers. Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron on the PSP supports 16-player multiplayer, complete with in-depth stat tracking, and intense 4-player skirmishes on Nintendo DS across a wide number of modes, including the all-new "Heroes and Villains." Take up arms as some of the most iconic Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Kit Fisto, Darth Maul and other familiar faces from Star Wars Battlefront®: Renegade Squadron™ and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed™. And battle for the fate of the galaxy on some of the most memorable Star Wars planets of all time, including the forest-covered landscape of Endor, the frozen wastes of Hoth and even the mysterious Yavin 4. More information about the game can be found at the official website, www.starwarsbattlefront.com.

Scribblenauts involved some pretty rough testing, and may have a few Easter Eggs

A portion of a Vooks interview with Joseph M. Tringali from 5TH Cell...

Vooks: How much of a nightmare was it to play-test a game with a seemingly unlimited number of possible items and interactions creatable by the player?

JMT: Testing was a challenge, but because the game revolves around systems, we tested the systems more so then the individual objects. If the system functioned, then theoretically the objects contained within the systems should work fine. This wasn’t always the case, but we ran into fewer problems then we initially expected. Most of the issues had to do with several special case objects that didn’t quite fit into a specific high level system.

Vooks: We loved Lock’s Quest and Drawn to Life. Can we expect any Easter eggs or subtle references that will be familiar to fans of previous 5th Cell games?

JMT: Both titles are near and dear to us! Unfortunately, due to the different publishers there isn’t any cross franchise material or references to our previous games in Scribblenauts. That said, there are plenty of Easter Eggs that relate to 5TH Cell in the title. The credits are pretty funny!
