Compete has followed online shopping demand/interest in all three next gen consoles. Below is a graph showing where things are right now, as well as some points Compete has put together.

* The Wii, the clear underdog with its relatively modest specs, surprised many skeptics by sustaining its post-launch interest and outselling the PS3. This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who tried in vain to find a Wii at anywhere close to its suggested retail price.

* The PS3 was a quick flash in the pan that fizzled on the backs of negative publicity, its lofty price and supply shortages. After only a few weeks on the market, the PS3 was attracting barely as many shoppers as the year-old Xbox 360.

* Xbox 360 demand spiked at the start of the holiday shopping season thanks in part to a highly publicized sale on Amazon, spill-over interest in the Wii and PS3, and the introduction of the smash hit Gears of War.

* With Xbox 360 and PS3 demand now running in lock-step, it will be difficult for Sony to gain ground on Microsoft due to a perceived price disparity between the two consoles and Microsoft’s broader game catalog.

Do you guys think that the Wii can keep this up throughout the software trickle of first quarter?

Why is Wii selling, while PS3 is struggling?

I have had this conversation with many people, from podcast staffers, to fellow bloggers, and other notable industry insiders. There is a very wide variety of opinions as to why the Wii is doing so well, while the PS3 seems to be having trouble. DMW has put together an article with a few reasons why they believe the PS3 is having a tough time.

1. The initial demand for the PS3 has waned off whereas Wii still has strong legs.

2. Price does matter for gamers outside of the small number of hard-core enthusiasts.

3. The negative press on the high price of PS3 has curbed the enthusiasm whereas the wrist-strap debacle of Wii may have actually increased people’s curiosity about the innovative design of the Wii. By now you should have heard of the conspiracy theory about the wrist-strap, haven’t you?

4. Blue-ray is not yet helping to sell PS3, making it harder to justify the high price point.

5. PS3 faces competition from not only Xbox 360 and Wii but also Sony’s own venerable PS2.

Those are all very good points, and I particularly agree with points 4. and 5. Do you guys have any other reasons why you think the PS3 isn’t selling as well as expected, while the Wii chugs along?

WoW wirklich unglaublich, was noch aus der alten Dame herrausgeholt wurde. 2007 wird ein game of the year award nciht gerade sehr einfach werden.

Bin auch sehr gespannt wie ein God of War 3 ausehen wird. ^^
