A lot of hardcore gamers got excited about those announcements, but are the games as interesting to more casual players? Will they convince new customers to buy a PlayStation 4?
I think those games speak to the entire population. If you hadn’t played them before, you’re going to play them now…. these are great stories. They tell themselves again and again. I don’t think Shakespeare has any trouble. Those works get a new audience all the time.
I think though, as the market grows and we reach the outer rings of the so-to-speak gamer community, how will PlayStation deliver meaning to a wider audience that might not be into gaming, per se? Well, we have other attributes. We spoke about that [in regards to streaming TV service] PlayStation Vue, and our partnership with Spotify for music. One might think that when people turn on their PlayStation, all they do is play games. But I think the research shows that people watch TV or listen to music or do all sorts of things.
What about other peripherals? Are we going to see an update of the PlayStation Eye or anything else for the PS4?
Actually, the camera business has been pretty good. I’m still staggered by the interest in the marketplace for people to stream themselves playing games live, and the appetite for people in the marketplace to watch that. That’s great. You know, as a gamer we always felt, back in the day, when you’re playing a game your best head shot or your best goal was always done when you were alone, and no one saw it. You told people about it later, and they’d go, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, sure you did.’ So I think the sharing function of PS4 to things like Twitch and YouTube allows people to put that out there and say, ‘Yeah, I did do that.’ So the camera business works well with that.
