Played the first mission, enjoyed the hell out of it. The menus are very Halo-esque. The demo supports campaign and one versus one skirmish. Haven't seen if co-op works on the demo yet. Got to play some more. later.
The first mission has you taking back alpha base, so you start out with Sgt Forge in a Warthog. You have to help out a bunch of Marines that are pinned down, then once you have a sufficient force, you take back alpha base.
The controls are well done, you can take control of units quickly and they respond accordingly. The scroll speed was a little slow for me so I had toi turn it up.
The graphics are quite nice. Zoom in and you can see all the little details in the snow, and all of the units look like there larger FPS counterparts. If you have ever played a halo game then you are instantly familiar with the menus and music.
The sound is great. Every little grunt and elite sound just like they do from Halo, and of course it wouldn't be a Halo game without chanting monks.
Just finished a skirmish match, and it rocked. In the demo you can have up to 3 spartans at a time and they have three different upgrades so far that I have seen. The first upgrade gives them a chaingun, the second gives them faster reflexes to improve movement speed and vehicle jacking ability, and the third gives each spartan a spartan laser.
So far I am very impressed with most of what I see. The scroll speed could be a little faster, and sometimes if an infantry unit is blocking a vehicle it will try to go around but will give up after one try.
There is a promotion system for troops from what I have seen kind of like C&C that is represented by stars. The most stars I have had for a unit is 5, but I am assuming that is the highest it goes. If a spartan gets into a vehicle, that vehicle is automatically promoted to a five star rank.
Spartans will regen their shields if not being fired upon, and any other unit can be healed by some sort of regen tool from the spirit of fire. Just hit up on the d-pad and choose the option, then select the target and instantly begin healing infantry and vehicles alike as long as they are in the circle.
You only have the ability to play as the UNSC in the demo save for the tutorial so I can't comment on the Covenant much.
I was excited, but skeptical on how Ensemble would do with this game, but they made a damn fine game if the demo represents the final build in any way.
Ensemble involved in Halo Wars' future
Microsoft Game Studios has a "lot of ideas" for future Halo Wars content, and said that the new studio created by former Ensemble employees will help.
"Ensemble is, as I'm sure you know, forming a new company, and they will be helping us support the title moving forward, so: bug patches, any kind of fixes - we'll have all those folks available to work on it," Jason Pace, lead producer for Halo wars and MGS overseer of the Halo franchise, told Eurogamer.
"As a studio right now, we're talking about what we'd like to do to carry this game forward. We're really excited about this game. We obviously have a lot of ideas of areas we'd like to go. We haven't committed to anything yet, but I believe you'll probably be hearing something soon."
Apparently there were "dozens and dozens" of features that didn't make the final cut; the sort of things you might want to do while playing Halo Wars but can't.
"And those kind of things, without mentioning anything specific, are always the kinds of things that we would be looking at to enhance the game moving forward," said Pace.
He went on to talk about the future of Halo Wars, insisting there is one and that this IP is just as strong and important as any of the Bungie shooters.
"I would not be able to comment on that now, but I can tell you from the perspective of the franchise that we're very excited about all of the potential that it has," added Pace when asked about a sequel.
"Halo Wars is a triple-A title for the [Halo] franchise. The way we conceive it is absolutely on par with one of the first-person shooter games. And so we're very much interested in how, and in what ways, we carry the entire franchise forward - including Halo Wars as a title. So definitely we're thinking a lot about that."
And that future might still include Ensemble, despite the apparent lack of faith Microsoft has about the value of the RTS genre as part of future financial plans.
"I can tell you right now that we are really interested in continuing our relationship with Ensemble [the new studio]. We don't have anything finalised that I can discuss, but certainly that is something we'd love to continue if possible," said Pace.
"Obviously what's happened with Ensemble has presented a new set of circumstances for us to think about. But that certainly hasn't altered what we'd like to do in the future with the title at all."
Microsoft still owns the rights to Age of Empires, mind you, and is apparently "very excited about the future potential" of the IP.
Is Age of Empires 4 the new game MGS and 'Ensemble MKII' will collaborate on? "That I can't comment on," said Pace.

It's everything I thought it would be...and more...ALOT more! People that truely wanted this to be great, they did NOT disappoint!
I'm so impressed, I think I'm gonna splurge and get the Limited Edition for the extra three maps and extra vehicle...plus the six leader cards! And I'm gonna researve it from EBgames so I get the code to download the Warthogs with flames painted on.
This is gonna be one HUGE hit! Yes, it's that good. The detail and everything about how the game is set up and runs...screams Halo quality.
And...no, the demo does NOT support online skirmishes...full version only. Demo lets us play a 2 mission single player campaign, or a 1v1 skirmish locally against an A.I. opponent. However, the full version will have 1v1, 2v2, 3v3...in any player/A.I. combo over Xbox LIVE...and we can choose the level of difficulty of the A.I. if you choose to use any.
We will also be able to play 2 player co-op thru the Campaign over Xbox LIVE...how cool is that?
I just know I'll be putting hundreds of hours into this one!
I just finished my first full skirmish 1vs1 and it was a blast! the AI on Normal is aggressive and sneaky but it makes for a great experience... at some points I felt as if I was playing online against somebody and not the AI.
I must agree with all of the above impressions, gamers--especially Halo fans, be happy we have a true winner in HW. It does deliver.
*Somehow the scale and atmosphere reminds me of playing the first Halo.
This game goes in frantic pace unlike all the other games Ensemble has developed, and it's good to know that I can follow that pace thanks to perfect control scheme. It's also worth noting that, thanks to its art design and gameplay pace, somehow it feels like Big Team match rather than typical RTS match.
Just finished a skirmish on heroic difficulty. I pretty much decimated the enemy, but he had 2 bases and hit me with about 4 huge waves of grunts, jackals, and hunters, that I was barely able to hold off. Then he sent about 3 more smaller waves, but these were banshee units and again I barely held them off because I had next to no air defense.
I then expanded my base once and built 2 Elephants in strategic choke points and then deployed them along with about 4 squads of ODST's apiece.
At this point I had all my ducks in a row and my back covered, and while the covenant were busy destroying my Elephants I was busy building and upgrading my Vultures.
Then, with fully upgraded vultures I went to their base and started my volleys of death. The covenant had no choice but to pull back and concentrate all of their fire on my Vultures but I had two Scorpians loaded with Spartans ready for them.
Then I used the fully upgraded quadruple shot MAC to finish them off and claim victory. Total time to win was about 40 mins.
Damn I love this demo!!

Könnte man glatt ins Kloster gehen...
