Rumour – Microsoft set to announce Avatar Kinect at CES keynote tonight

avatar-kinect.jpg

Glimpse Dog is reporting that a new Kinect-centric service, known as Avatar Kinect, is set to be announced at Microsoft’s CES keynote later on tonight.

The service seems to show a Mii-like service where Avatars can communicate with each other, as well as use services like ESPN.

Winrumours has also run the Glimpse Dog story, saying Avatar Kinect is a software update “delivered over Xbox Live”.

Microsoft’s streaming its CES keynote online in Vegas tonight, as reported earlier.
It all kicks off from 2.30am GMT/9.30pm EST/6.30pm PST.

Major Nelson Revealing a New 360 Game Next Week?

V3DRA.jpg

The Major won't spill the beans yet, but according to him there's something really, really good coming next week. In his last podcast 'Show 382: 2010 end of year wrap-up', Major Nelson reveals that the week after CES11, he'll be going to New York to do Press Event for a 'Really,Really Good Game' coming up that he can't talk about.
I'm doing a press event for a game coming up that I can't talk about yet. A really, really good game, that I'm really excited about. - (4:35 - 4:55)
The details are minimal, and we're not even sure if it's a new game or a previously announced one, but with the lack of announcements for 2011, seems very unlikely that the game might be old.

What 'really, really good game' could it be? Have any ideas or a wish list? Tell us in the comments section.

Avatar Kinect revealed, brings gesture to 360 chat

20110106avtrknct_grab.jpg

Microsoft has unveiled Avatar Kinect at its CES 2011 keynote presentation. The social suite uses the peripheral’s motion sensing capabilities to translate the user’s gestures and facial expressions into Avatar animations for multi-user chats.

The new application drops players’ Avatars into a variety of differently-themed environments, where they can engage in “face-to-face” chat through their virtual personas. Seated in a circle, the avatars act out players’ physical movements and expressions.

Somewhat like text-to-animation service Xtranormal, users can record their sessions to create webisodes or vodcasts, which can then be shared on the web.

Existing social services like those packaged with ESPN will be able to utilise the application’s features.

Free to all gold-level Xbox LIVE subscribers, Avatar Kinect launches in Spring.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, introduced the software in his avatar form, showing off the Kinect’s ability to recognise gestures as small as waggling eyebrows.

Further, taped demonstrations showed Kinect Avatar animating hand and arm gestures, and translating facial expressions into emotes. There were no “bam! there it is” moments.

The existence of Avatar Kinect was leaked on Tuesday.

There a video of the Avatar Kinect part of the MS keynote below (thanks, Prof.Dr.Moertel):

Beyond Good & Evil HD, Torchlight join Xbox Live Arcade House Party

Following its CES 2011 press event, Microsoft decided to crank the excitement up by announcing the Xbox Live Arcade House Party. The event brings with it five new downloadable releases, the cream of which is indubitably the classic Beyond Good & Evil HD and addictive Torchlight.

The House Party kicks off on February 16th with the release of Hard Corps Uprising, ARC System Works’s run-and-gun prequel to the Contra series.

Four other titles will follow over the next few weeks, although the order and timing are unknown, and no indication of price point was given.

Beyond Good & Evil HD spruces up Ubisoft’s classic adventure, while Torchlight marks the first console port of indie Runic’s best-selling Diablo-clone.

Bejeweled Blitz arrives for the socially conscious casual kind, and Full House Poker is … well, it’s poker, isn’t it, but as well as playing on your Xbox 360, you can carry games and progress over to the Windows Phone version.

Aber zumindest was DL games angeht gehts munter weiter.

CES: Microsoft on Kinect, the 360, and the future of Xbox Live

We chat with Microsoft about balancing Kinect, the core, and more at the 2011 CES.

This week at CES we had the opportunity to chat with David Dennis, Group Manager for Public Relations, Interactive Entertainment Business (in English: PR Manager for Xbox 360/Kinect amongst other things) briefly about the Xbox 360, Kinect, and Xbox Live. While much of our conversation reiterated points made during Steve Ballmer's CES Keynote for Microsoft the night prior, Dennis shared a number of important bits of information on Microsoft's philosophy moving forward with the Xbox 360 and Kinect.

On Kinect and the Dashboard:

"Obviously we continue to work to add Kinect functionality to the Xbox 360 experience. We're still working on adding additional language options and voice commands to (it)." Dennis was less clear about the Kinect Hub adding support for media streaming outside of the ESPN/Netflix/Zune/Hulu ecosystem; when asked whether Kinect and voice playback of media streamed from Windows PCs would be added to the Xbox 360 dashboard, Dennis demurred, stating that Microsoft's ultimate goal was parity between the standard controller driven interface and Kinect.

On Kinect vs. the Hardcore

"Obviously we're very excited by the success of Kinect," Dennis said. "But we have no intention of abandoning the Xbox 360 audience that bought in originally. We're very aware of the key role the enthusiastic core audience played in making the Xbox 360 what it is, and we'll continue to support and develop (titles) like Halo and Gears of War." Crytek's exclusive Codename: Kingdoms was mentioned and Dennis stressed that there are a number of core-focused titles in development that have not been announced.

On additional improvements to Xbox Live:

"A lot of the improvements we've made to Xbox Live over the last year have been behind the scenes -- a lot of work went into making sure Xbox Live was ready for the release of Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops," Dennis said, tacitly acknowledging the previous issues the service has experienced in the wake of high profile releases like Modern Warfare and Halo 3. "But," he continued, "we're very aware of the kinds of improvements Live users want to see, and we'll continue to work on developing the service." When asked what the biggest player priority seemed to be off the top of his head, Dennis replied "the friends list issue, which, you know, only affects a certain percentage of users, but clearly it's very important to them."
