Ladies and Gentlemen,
NINTENDO has applied a patent at the Japanese Patent office and it will rock N-GAME history!
STEP ONE: How to get to the patent?
1) Go to the
Japanese Property Digital Library
2) Go to PAJ (under Patent&Utility Model)
3) Fill in the first text box, NINTENDO and then press the Search button
4) You will find a number of hits (currenlty 560), show the list and click the first Patent of 2006 named Game Device (Patent number, 2006 - 020691).
5) You are there!
6) AND YES, this is a Nintendo patent and not some patent that mentions Nintendo. Why? Because the first text box in the search machine is for APPLICANT search items!

STEP TWO: What is the deal?
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a game device which can perform a three-dimensional display even by a small-sized device.
SOLUTION: This game device is equipped with a display device, an optical member, a touch panel, and a game processing means. In the game device, the display device displays a game image. The optical member has a structure which consists of a bundle of fiber-like transparent members, the shape of one surface of the input/output surfaces which are formed on both ends of the transparent member is a flat surface, and at the same time, the shape of the other surface is an approximately spherical curved surface, and the optical member is arranged in such a manner that the flat surface may come into contact with the display surface of the display device. The touch panel covers the curved surface section of the optical member. The game processing means performs a game processing for changing the game image in response to inputs to the touch panel.
STEP THREE: Unclear what it says?
1) Go to DETAIL
2) Go to EFFECT OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention, the game image currently displayed on the drop emerges and is visible to the curved surface of an optical member by using the above-mentioned optical member. That is, a game image will be displayed on the curved surface of an optical member in three dimensions. Therefore, since it becomes possible about a three-dimensional display only by installing the above-mentioned optical equipment in the screen of a drop according to this invention, it becomes possible to perform a three-dimensional display also, for example in small equipment like a handheld game machine.
3) Go to DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Moreover, as the method of presentation for showing, as the image jumped out of the screen, there is an approach using the optical equipment which consisted of bundles of an optical fiber, for example (for example, patent reference 2 reference). The 1st end face of optical equipment is contacted on the screen which displays an image, this image is inputted into the 1st end face, and this image is expressed to 2nd another end face as this approach. By this, the image of a screen can be displayed on a different flat surface from the field in contact with the screen of optical equipment, and this image can be shown in three dimensions in false.

STEP FIVE: Conclusions?
1) NINTENDO has the technology for 3D display
2) It consists of an optical membrane that is covered over the display screen
3) This enables the developer to display three-dimensional images (in other words, auto-stereoscopic view)
4) The technology is applicable on all sorts of displays
5) The membrane apparently is made of many optical fibers
6) In this patent, they address handhelds with a touch screen (that does not mean it's the DS!)
STEP SIX: Questions
1) How does this exactly work?
2) Is this patent what it is supposed to be? (Or is this the
secret?)
3) Is the technology applicable for Wii and for TV screens without having large bulbs of membrane? Is it going to be only handheld? The next iteration of the Nintendo DS??
