PS3 White Knight Chronicles (Level 5 RPG)

White Knight Story Update in Japan

Sony released White Knight Story in Japan on December 25 2008, and have just announced the first major update for the game. The update will be called "1st. Wave" and has been developed with user opinions, to improve playability of the game. So how are they going to do this:

- Added a new easy-to-use screen menu.
- Kept the classic menu, but added two additional interfaces that can be chosen in preferences.
- Improved online Co-op matchmaking, so that you are matched with people of a similar level.
- And more features that have yet to be announced.

The update will also add support for some new quests. The release date for "1st. Wave" is still to be announced. It is also unknown whether all these features and downloadable content will be available on the disc when the game comes to the West.

Ok, danke

VoiceChat possible for US/EU-Release

Sony and Level-5's latest role-playing collaboration, White Knight Chronicles, has been out in Japan since December, but we recently got a chance to check out a partially localized version of the game at Sony Gamers Day 2009.

Those who've been anxiously awaiting its Stateside debut will be happy to hear that (as we were, quite literally) the voice-over work and dialog sounds great. Speaking of sound, Sony confirmed to us that it's planning to implement voice chat in the US and European versions of White Knight Chronicles, something that was painfully absent from the Japanese release. We're told it's not 100% set in stone, but the dev and localization teams "really want to make it happen."

Given the compressed schedule of the event, it was far from the ideal environment to go deep with such a high-profile RPG. Still, we were able to adventure through the overworld and come to grips with the combat system. While attacks require time to recharge, character movement and evasion is entirely real time. It's good, then, that attack selection is such a breeze -- and so customizable.

With just a few button presses, we were able to create rows of custom attack combinations that could be navigated with a quick up/down/left/right on the D-pad. The Sony rep guarding the kiosk said he'd leveled the characters up "quite a bit," so it was hard to really get a feel for the effectiveness of one attack over another. They all killed in one hit!

We did get a chance to transform our character into a towering knight in order to do battle with an equally gigantic enemy. After all, why wail away with puny swords when you can run an enemy through with a blade the size of a bus?

Sadly, the online co-op component of the game wasn't being demonstrated, but we've gut a hunch we'll get to play -- and write about -- plenty of it before the drop-dead gorgeous game ships at the end of '09.

IGN-Preview:

White Knight Chronicles Hands-on
A JRPG everyone can enjoy?

April 29, 2009 - Traditionally, I don't like Japanese role-playing games. Sure, Persona 3 won me over, but beyond that, it's a pretty hard sell if you want me to pick up a Final Fantasy or Eternal Sonata. With that said, I was kind of caught off guard by how much I dug White Knight Chronicles. The game looks slick, the combat is easy to get into, and the story seems like it has a solid base.

In short, White Knight Chronicles could be pretty good even if you're a jughead like myself.

If you're checking in on Level-5 and Sony's baby for the first time, the short story is that you'll see the events of the world from the perspective of Leonard. Big L's been living in Balandor Village his whole life, and it's been pretty run of the mill. However, during the princess' 18th birthday celebration, an evil force arrives and steals her away. Sensing the call to greatness, Leonard picks up a sword and sets out to make the world right again. Or at least that's what the story is supposed to shake down as. My demo was all about single-player gameplay and not the fact that you'll get to play as six different characters, lead three-character parties, and take the fight online in some four-player quests.

Set in a gorgeous field full of bright green grass getting blown around by the wind and divided by a rolling blue stream, I picked up the controller and took Leonard into a fight with a gigantic, wiry tree monster. Now, aside from the story similarities, I was initially a bit taken aback by how much the main character looked like Link from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess with his simple garb, shield, and sword. Of course, avatars will be completely customizable in White Knight through a series of sliders and options so this could simply be coincidence but still.

Thankfully, the combat didn't play anything like the Zelda I know or RPGs I've seen recently. At the bottom of the screen, a number of moves or "Skills" are laid out in a line, and you can cycle through them with the D-Pad to choose your next move while maneuvering Leonard around the screen. Slash, Flaming Slash, and Shield Blow were all options for my attacker, and a few of them had the aggressor leaping into the air and wailing on the bad guy. When the move is done, you can choose your next attack, but you'll have to wait for a circle meter to refill before Leonard can execute the move.

Being a demo, the tall and strong-looking tree monster toppled pretty easily - as did the giant troll -- but I wouldn't expect the bad guys in the final version of the game to go down without a fight. Still, I was impressed at how easy it was to cycle through the attacks, press X, and see Leonard attack. The system seemed deep but easy to use.

Sadly, that was pretty much it for the demo on hand. I didn't get to see our hero transform into the White Knight (the whole reason the bad guys crashed the princess' party), the 13 stages, or the six towns you'll get to visit. You'll also get the chance to combine weapons and write blogs as well as communicate with other players via GeoNet, but those features weren't getting shown off either.

Want more on White Knight? Well, the experience is estimated to take about 40 hours, but you won't be getting your hands on it super-soon. So far, Sony's spent about five weeks recording English voice work, and the company isn't done yet. We'll have an updated, in-depth preview as soon as possible, but look for a release date to be announced at E3.
