Sony and Nintendo will tie in hardware race, says former SCEE boss

Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival this morning, former SCEE president Chris Deering predicted Sony and Nintendo will tie in the hardware sales stakes by 2011.

The EIF chairman presented figures he arrived at by triangulating Screen Digest and IDG data. He also took into account factors such as the growth of hi-def and the grey gamer market, the emergence of new game engines and increasing ubiquity of wi-fi access. He said the active installed base for hardware is set to rise from 316 million to 500 million over the next three years, with "two big mega-powers" leading the charge.

According to Deering sales of the DS and any future iterations of the hardware will reach 150 million by 2011, while the figure for Wii will be 80 million. He predicted the installed base for PS3 will be 70 million, and said for PS2 it will be 90 million and PSP will be 70 million. In other words, Sony and Nintendo will each have sold 230 million machines.

Deering said he believes the Xbox 360 and any sequels will experience "decent growth", predicting an installed base of 40 million by 2011. He observed this figure is higher than some analysts are projecting, adding, "This is not necessarily because I've got some issues with Xbox 360 in Continental European countries et cetera, but because of the set-top box hi-def phenomenon."

In addition, Deering predicted the number of potential gamers will rise to 2.5 billion worldwide when also taking into account the installed bases for computers and mobile phones.
 
Just got this from Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter:

We estimate sell-through of 650,000 Wii, 275,000 Xbox 360 and 250,000 PS3 consoles. Our console sell-through forecasts reflect our belief that supplies for Wii hardware were steady this month (we expect a supply increase to hit the U.S. in August), and our belief that Xbox 360 hardware sales grew in the month due to recent clearance pricing for the Xbox 360 Pro (20Gb) to $299 from $349.

NPD figures for July are to be released on Thursday this week.

Pachter vs. VgChartz: Wer rät besser? Also wenn VgChartz was taugt, dann muss der Unterschied zwischen Box und PS3 viel größer sein. Ein Plus von nur 25k wäre enttäuschend nach der Preissenkung.

Man weiß aber nicht, wieviele Xbox360 20 GB Modelle noch im Umlauf waren. Das 60 GB Modell war jedenfalls im July schon in einigen Geschäten vorhanden - für 349$
 
Here's something a little different. This morning the NPD Group sent us their July sales preview. While the monthly data that NPD typically sends out is hard numbers, these are all predictions based on their analysis of early sales. Those hard numbers won't be hitting till later this month.

The in-depth packet doesn't give us predictions of the top selling games of the month across the board, it does tell us that the group believes that the Wii will manage to outsell the Playstaiton 3 and Xbox 360 combined in July and than the DS will approach tripling Playstation Portable sales.

According to the predictions, the Playstation 3 will see a sizable drop this month in sales down more than 130,000 consoles to 235, 447 while the Xbox 360 wil see a drop of 105,000. The Wii's drop will be a predicted and substantial 170,455.

Here are the raw predictions:

NPD says they believe that the Xbox 360's lead over the PS3 this month will be due to the price cut of the 360's 20GB Pro model. The NPD analysis also says that they are uncertain if the 360 and PS3 will receive price cuts before the end of the year, but that if they come it will come from Microsoft first, with Sony following suit.

Mal sehen,ob es stimmt!Wenn ja dann hat VgCHartz wieder gut 100K zu viel für die 360 geraten!

Halte ich für gar nicht so abwegig. Schließlich war es keine "richtige" Preissenkung, eher ein Ausverkauf, nämlich der 20Gb Version.
Es gibt sicherlich auch viele die dann aber lieber auf die 60Gb Version warten, denn nur mit der macht ja das Install Feature Sinn.

Ich hab mir vor 2 Stunde Soul Calibur 4 für die PS3 gekauft... das erste was ich gemacht habe war die optionale Installation und ich bin auch froh über die Option, nun hab ich viel kürzere Ladezeiten als ohne Installation (habs vor ein paar Tagen bei meinem Bruder gezockt, der hatte es noch nicht installiert)

Und wie Master Chief bereits sagte hat es bei der 360er noch den Vorteil das man das Laufwerk nicht mehr ertragen muss. ;-)

Also soviel zum Thema "sinnlos"

Ich denke mal die große Mehrheit sieht das anders. Wenn man die Wahl hat jedes Spiel auf die FP zu kopieren um Laufwerkszugriffe zu minimieren und ggf. auch die Ladezeiten zu verkürzen ist das IMO die bisher größte Verbesserung im xbox Dashboard.

Ich finde diese Funktion auch sinnvoll.
Wenn man ein Game aber nur antesten oder es beim Bekannten mal vorführen möchte kann man es wie bisher ganz normal von DVD zocken. Gefällt es einem aber installiert man es eben in ner Pause. Denn man ist ja nicht gezwungen, die Installation direkt zu Beginn des Spiels zu tätigen.
Man hat die freie Wahl und das finde ich ist der entscheidende Faktor.
 
Klingt nicht schlecht. So würde ich es auch einschätzen.

Und ab August bis Ende des Jahres wird die Box imo jeden Monat wieder richtig Boden gut Manchen
