March 24, 2005 - Today, SEGA officially announced Shadow the Hedgehog, a title we first saw at this year's GDC show in San Francisco. While the company isn't divulging too much about the title yet, today's announcement did give us some tasty new tidbits.
First, SEGA Studio USA is developing the title under supervision of Takashi Iizuka, lead developer of the Sonic Adventure titles and Sonic Heroes. As you would guess, you'll play as Shadow, a dark hedgehog introduced in Sonic Adventure 2. When we saw the trailer at GDC, we felt echoes of Ratchet and Clank's weapon-heavy action, and indeed, SEGA says that Shadow will collect an arsenal of weapons, vehicles, and other objects as he makes his way through more than 50 missions.
Shadow, tormented by the mystery of his own past, is caught in the crossfire between aliens, the G.U.N. army, and Dr. Eggman. The game will offer multiple paths and multiple endings; the choices you make in the game determine the truth of Shadow's past.
"Since we first introduced him in Sonic Adventure 2, we have wanted to feature Shadow in his own game," said Iizuka. "We maintained Shadow as a mysterious character and now fans can control his destiny by engaging in a unique gameplay experience that offers a multitude of possibilities!"
SEGA plans to release Shadow this winter on all current-generation consoles. Be sure to check out a first batch of screens, and stay tuned for more as details roll in.
