XOne/PC Scalebound

Scalebound Will Not Disappoint Fans Of Dragons Say PlatinumGames

At E3 last week, Microsoft and PlatinumGames announced a new Xbox One-exclusive game, titled Scalebound. While we know nothing about how it plays, Platinum have posted a couple of messages about Scalebound on their official blog. First up is Hideki Kamiya, the game’s director:

This is Hideki Kamiya, creative director at PlatinumGames.

The day has finally come that I can announce my new project to everyone.

I’ve created many original titles over the course of my career. Now I have a great opportunity to launch a new project with a new partner, and I’m excited to bring you a brand new game experience once again.

The focus of my new game is the gigantic beast that reigns over the fantasy genre: the dragon. Dragons have a unique power to capture the imagination, and I’ve loved dragons since I was a child. I’ve always wished that I could create a game featuring this magnificent creature; now the time has come for me to realize my dream.

I can’t share many details about the game yet, but rest assured that the development team and I are working around the clock so that we can show you more as soon as possible. For now, I ask that you let your imagination run wild while you wait.

I promise dragon fans around the world: this game will not disappoint. See you soon,

Hideki Kamiya (@pg_kamiya)

Director, Scalebound

And next up is J.P. Kellams, who is serving as creative producer on Scalebound:

Dragons have lived in our fantasies for centuries. They are a common thread that weave between cultures and eras, linking us together under wings and flame; fear and awe.

Scalebound is project that strives to live up to these ideals. A Japanese and American team working together to create the dragon game we’ve always dreamed of, but never gotten to play. Together, we can create something that pushes our team, and the action genre, to new heights.

Our team considers it an honor to take up this challenge. Knowing how many of us have wanted this game forever, I can’t imagine how many of you have wanted the same thing. It’s going to be a wild ride and we can’t wait to take it with you.

Jean Pierre Kellams (@pg_jp)

Creative Producer, Scalebound

Scalebound doesn’t have a release window yet.

Platinum Games Has "Never Made a Game Like Scalebound"

Platinum Games’ Xbox One exclusive action game, Scalebound, is the first of its kind in many ways for the developer.

“The one thing that I will say is that up until this point in my career, and up until this point in Platinum Games’ history, we’ve never made a game like Scalebound,” Director Hideki Kamiya told IGN. “What I’m trying to do with Scalebound is create a very different kind of game than what I’ve created up until this point. We’re trying to create new gameplay, and that is a challenge for me personally.

For Kamiya, “It’s less about new hardware, and more about making something totally new.” That said, new hardware certainly contributes to what makes Scalebound a unique project for the Osaka, Japan-based studio.

“We’ve never tried to do something photo-real or something more realistic with that touch,” Kamiya explained, “but it’s always been something I’ve wanted to try. Now having that opportunity has been both difficult but interesting. And the power of the machine is helping there. It’s definitely something Platinum Games has wanted to try, and now we’re getting our chance to do it, which is cool.”

Scalebound is also distinct as a collaboration between Platinum, a Japanese developer, and Microsoft, a western publisher.

One of the things that happens, Kamiya explained, “is you’ll make something and put it aside or decide it’s good for now and we’ll tackle this later, and [Microsoft] will come to you and be like, ‘What are you going to do with this? Where are you going with this?’” In turn, this forces the team to “reevaluate ideas or push forward with them.”

"Working with western publishers is an important step for Platinum Games, and working with Microsoft, who believe in our vision for creating something new, has been a great learning experience for us so far," said Creative Producer JP Kellams. "We’ve developed a really open relationship between our two teams – like any relationship, that means lots of hard work, but that work is allowing us to make a game we’ve always wanted to make while growing as a studio.”

The benefit of these efforts is that Platinum’s Xbox One game releases sooner than it otherwise might.

“Microsoft is very hands on and they check everything while you’re working together,” Kamiya said. “One of the things we’ve noticed, because they keep you honest, is that we’ve been making this game faster than we normally would.”

Scalebound Will Be Easier Than Platinum's Previous Titles

Scalebound, Platinum Games’ Xbox One-exclusive action-adventure game, will be easier than the studio's notoriously hard action titles in order to make it more accessible, game director Hideki Kamiya told IGN at TGS.

Kamiya is renowned for his stylish action genre games such as Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, all of which require a level of dedication and a high skill set to dominate.

Scalebound places players in the role of headphone-sporting warrior who battles epic-sized monsters on a hostile world. Players are paired with a dragon whom they fight alongside with over the course of the game. Kamiya said that Scalebound is the first of its kind in many ways for Platinum, a outlined in a recent interview with IGN.

“So the games that I have worked on in the past we can say that they are more about sort of mastery…” Kamiya said in the latest interview. “For this game, Scalebound, of course taking all of the titles that we have worked on, so it is unlike any [game] that we made. And on top of that, the setting of the game, the realm, the world as well as the subject matter, the dragons, and are hoping that will attract a wider audience.”

“Easy or difficult can be defined it so many different ways. For example, if it was a very text or dialog heavy game, but yet you went to point where you felt puzzled,” he said when we asked if that meant that Scalebound will be easier than his previous action games. “So in the past it was really intense, you now really high impact high pace sort of action games that require skills.

“In that sense, it may not deliver the experience you’ve seen from our games but at the same that doesn't mean that it will be easy.” he explained, adding that there will be various creative ways to approach the battles and encounters.

“So the games that I have worked on, I’ll give one example with Devil May Cry, that was years ago,” he explained. “I was young too when I made that game and if had a user or fan in front of me that said ‘I really tried, but I guess I suck or I just can't get this enemy’ it was easy for me to say ‘that is your kind of skills, you kind of suck.’ That is not the type of difficulty that we are going to demand from the players.”

Scalebound Developer Teases Multiplayer

Scalebound producer Atsushi Inaba teased that Platinum Games’ Xbox One-exclusive action-adventure game may have multiplayer components, hinting that the answer lays in the game’s trailer.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to comment or say at this time,” Inaba told IGN at TGS when asked if the game has multiplayer aspects. “But as Kamiya touched on it earlier, we are not building this as a pure sort of linear boss [game. The] player can then go and go back if you want to and replay the entire game, so we’ll kind of leave that up to your imagination.

“We are making this game not to be a short game but something that players will be playing for longer hours at a time,” he added. “After this session you will be able to go back to the trailer. As we said every shot counts and every shot means something, there may be something [there].”

The game’s E3 2014 reveal trailer depicted the supernatural-power equipped main protagonist dodging dragons and monsters as he is joined by his dragon companion. Before the pair go on to confront an epic-sized hydra, the scene reveals a number of dragon-born fighters flying out to head-off the monolithic beast.

As dramatically shown in the trailer, game director Hideki Kamiya couldn’t divulge the finer details on whether the beasts that the player battles with can be approached in an open-world environment or if the player has to approach and battle them in a linear fashion.

“It is sort of related to that earlier answer that I gave, but if we take Bayonetta as a pure action game, I think the overall structure of the overall game is, somewhat to us, becoming more of an old-school-type stage-clearer go on to the next stage, next stage and then there is always that boss at the end to clear the game. And if you want to go back, you can’t. That was a cycle of that game, for Scalebound were not looking to build it [that way].”

In response to a question if Scalebound will an open-world structure or a more linear one, Kamiya said that the large scale battles against the monsters he had in mind would better in vast expanses.

“This vision that we have with these large monsters is super high impact, like dynamic sort of battles here,” he said. “The probably perfect environment or setting that we can give to show that off would be a place in this sort of vast natural environment. So I do want to bring that out and be able to showcase that in the right space.”

While the developer was unable to cover how much character customisation there is, he did mention that the only playable character is the one featured in the trailer and players won’t be able to choose gender.

Kamiya did placate that the game is it is progressing satisfactorily despite the thin details the team were willing to share, saying “we wouldn’t be here today if things weren’t going on path as planned.”

Kamiya told IGN in recent interviews that the monster-centric title is the first of its kind in many ways for Platinum and that difficulty of Xbox One-exclusive action-adventure game is easier compared to Platinum’s other notoriously hard action titles, such as Bayonetta and Devil May Cry.
