How Madden will work on Revo
April 28th, 2006
SM EA logoGamespot managed to get an interview with John Schappert, head of EA Canada, and involved with EA Burnaby, the development house working on the special Revolution version of Madden. Check out some interesting information (not all Madden related) from the write up/interview below. Huge thanks to Andre for the heads up!
Players will hike the ball by mimicking a quarterback receiving the ball from the center, and then pass it to a receiver by making a throwing gesture with the free-hand controller. The faster the passing motion, the more of a bullet pass it becomes (in previous Madden editions, bullet passes were made by holding the passing button down longer).
Kicking the ball will be accomplished by sweeping the controller up as if it were a kickers leg striking the ball. A fast, level swing will make for a hard, straight kick.
The Revolution controller will also come into play when running the ball, as jerking the controller left or right will make the ball-carrier juke to either side, while shoving it straight ahead will make him stiff-arm the opposition.
GS: What can you say about EAs plans to bring other franchises, other familiar names to the Revolution? Is this something that well see unveiled across all the major brands eventually?
JS: I can tell you that were working on titles other than just Madden right now and were not unveiling those just yet. I think youll see continued support for Revolution and youll see EA continue to bring innovative titles that maximize the power of the machine. Whats important to us is weve recognized the uniqueness of the Rev and how innovative it is, and what we dont want to do is say, Hey, theres another platform, lets port a game to it and get it on that platform. Unless we can maximize that game for the power, the uniqueness, and the innovative control, were going to wait until we know how to do that right to bring those franchises there. What Im proud of is all the franchises we have in development have very innovative control schemes as Ive just described for Madden. Theyre maximizing the power of the machine: the control, the WiFi. What makes the Revolution unique is what our focus is for our Revolution group and the titles theyre working on.
GS: So we wont be seeing straight ports to the Rev?
JS: I dont think Revolution consumers want straight ports. We want to bring out games that are great for the Revolution. And thats what were trying to do. Were trying to take our expertise, and happily having a great football engine that we can count on solves a lot of problems. You dont have to sit there and worry about, Lets get the game to play great football AI. Its more about, Lets get the game to play great on the Revolution with a brand new, unique control device. Which is really the problem that we think all of our games should be solving on the Revolution.
GS: Will we see more franchise-driven Revolution games from EA or will it be a chance to try out new IPs specifically built around the Revolution?
JS: When we talk about a new platform, what would the Revolution be without having Madden there? I think users expect some of our core, big franchises to be on Revolution and we understand that. I think youll see EA support the Revolution with our strong franchises, but at the same time its such a unique machine with a unique controller that it certainly gives us opportunity to think about doing new things and specific games just for that platform. At the same time, we have such a wealth of franchises that to me whats kind of cool is when you think about taking a franchise like Madden and doing that on Revolutionwhile people have played football games before, theyve never played Madden this way. Yes, youve seen a football game before, but youve never seen anything like this before.
So thats what excites us. Even though we are expected to bring over some of our big franchises [to the Revolution], were bringing them over and theres massive innovation in them. I think youll see a lot of innovation in all the franchises we bring over. At the same time, in the future I wouldnt doubt that maybe there are some originals we can do, but I would hope that you look at the games were bringing over, and even if youve seen the franchise before, you think that its an original in and of itself, too. I hope you look at Madden Revolution and say Holy cow! Thats unique, that feels like an original game just for the Revolution.
"I have followed the rumors and speculation on this board regarding Nintendos Revolution since its inception.
It is at times torturous to see the most dedicated base of any gaming company have to resort to gossip and guesses as to what to expect from Nintendos next generation offering.
It is for this reason that I have decided to share.
I cannot offer anything to you in terms of my identity. I cannot offer anything in the way of proving what I am saying to you is factual. However, you will ultimately find that you need not worry who I am, for all I say will come to pass. But I suspect you know my name
So heres the scoop. Im tired of watching you beautiful fans endure the torture of knowing so little, so I will share with you enough to help you understand the magnitude of whats coming without saying enough to reveal who I am.
Ill say this before I begin spilling the proverbial beans. Remember 1985? Remember when saying Nintendo meant video games in general? This is what Nintendo is aiming to recapture, and believe me, they will!
Lets start with a question:
1. Why have we yet to see even a glimpse of what a Revolution game will look like?
Most seem to assume this is because Nintendo does not want the focus of their next generation games to be on their graphics. This is not entirely wrong, just a little uninformed. That being said, the graphics are essentially the same as a souped up Xbox. What you all are ignoring is that the graphics for the Xbox360 are arguably only the same as a souped up Xbox as well. Graphically, in terms of traditional graphics, the systems are equal. In terms of presentation, you will be astonished by what the Revolution holds, and it is indeed the final secret Mr. Miyamoto hinted at. Prepare to see games in a way you never imagined, and you dont need a silly helmet or visor to experience it. As a matter of fact, a video demonstration of what Revolution can do circulated the internet weeks or months before E3, and then conspicuously disappeared. Such a sneaky little box! Ill leave the rest to you!
Well I cant resist.
A final hint
Think hard about the controller and what type of graphical presentation would suit it best! Its so easy! Oh, and the controller is indeed meant to attract the casual gamer, because they'll so badly want to experience what they're seeing!
2. Use the right side of your brain!
As many of you have correctly stated, the right side of your brain is the creative side. So what was Reggie hinting at? Again, its so easy I dont need to say it! Youre given all of the components you need, and some general structure. The rest my friends, is up to you!
3. Indeed a revolution, but in code name only. Its 1985 all over again
4. Wi-Fi will open doors you never would have predicted. Its all so obvious though if you think about it, but its so hard for me to say without saying too much! If youve figured out what Ive already hinted at, picture how the ability to download monthly offerings will that much more enhance your experience!
5. The Classics.
Many for free just for joining one free a month Itunes pricing per each additional first party title. Third parties will bundle 3-5 each with a new game purchase.
6. The price is right youll just have to trust me!
7. Kodak Theater = Mushroom Kingdom!
Ive said enough. What Ive shared should be enough to get you all cooled down a bit.
Never underestimate Nintendo.
