The original ending that for a long time we discussed is Ellie would believe the lie and you’d see them walking off to Tommy’s town and the camera would track up and you’d feel like, they’re going to be okay. It was about a week before we shot that scene and we thought, this isn’t honest, this doesn’t feel right, Ellie would know, I don’t buy it, we have to change this.
This is an Ashley thing but no matter what the acting direction is, she’s going to nod her head and be like, ‘okay…okay’. And throughout shooting, a lot of her improvisation for Ellie involved saying, ‘okay’. And I thought, you have to end on that. Whatever it is Joel tells her, she has to just be like, ‘okay’.
geht nicht, darfst da nur schusswaffen nutzen.
Reunited with Ellie, the doctor’s tell Marlene that the Cordyceps infection’s unique mutation within Ellie may make it possible for them to reverse-engineer a vaccine. However, the doctors cannot operate on her friend’s brain without killing her. The doctors ask for her “permission” to go ahead with the procedure, a formality Marlene assumes is done merely on principal as she does not think she could stop the operation regardless. She decides to make the choice and allows them to proceed. The decision is hard on her. She records two ruminations to Anna over the choice she is about to make, but remains firm that it needs to be done.
When Joel comes to, Marlene thanks him for looking after her, grateful they both survived the ordeal to get to the hospital. When she tells him of Ellie’s situation and the possibility of a vaccine, he objects to the idea. Marlene, sympathetic to his turmoil, tells him that Ellie’s death is necessary and far more important than anything either of them may feel for her as surrogate parents. She tells the fellow Firefly next to her to lead him out but shoot him should he attempt to stop the operation. Other Fireflies suggest to Marlene that she just kill Joel, but she refuses to kill the one person who understands what she’s going through.
Her decision to keep him alive allows Joel to stop the operation and take Ellie from the doctors. Marlene waits for Joel in the parking lot of the hospital and tries to stop him at gunpoint. She tries to intimidate him with terrible scenarios that could happen to Ellie; death at the hands of Clickers, sexual assault or murder committed by thugs. Marlene tells him that Ellie would want to help the world and that he can still do the right thing. She lowers her gun and raises her hands in a show of peace. Joel then shoots her in the side and places the unconscious Ellie inside a car. Bleeding out, Marlene begs Joel to let her live. He appears to hesitate, but kills her anyway, knowing she would try to find Ellie if he let her live.
It's actually been confirmed by Nolan North himself (Who plays David) That at first he wanted a legitimate relationship with Ellie, to have her join his clan and protect her, and didn't want to eat her. However, when he kept pushing him away and getting dangerous (As well running away after killing James) he finally had the chance to, well.. As Nolan North put it in his words "Get what he wants."
So yes, rape was attempted on Ellie when David got the chance in the resturant; he got on top of her and held her by her hair. And when she said "He tried to-" to Joel, that's exactly what she meant, but was unable to finish saying it without getting choked up and crying.
For me, as a female player as well, that scene was so real, and to be honest, i'm very glad Naughty Dog was able to touch on such realistic themes and circumstances in good taste. It made me sad however to see the traumatizing effect it left on Ellie long after it was over.
Glad she hacked his face off.![]()
Joel's Beruf, nope
Ellies Vergangenheit, Eltern, nope
