I honestly hope that the film version of Robots isn't as dreadfully dull an adventure as the franchise's handheld exploits. The game, developed by the usually keen and competent Griptonite studio, is one of the blandest and most generic games released on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS this year. The design is rather uncreative and redundant, with very little originality put forth in its presentation. The Nintendo DS version is what I'd like to call "GBA Plus," offering only the absolute basic of functionality to push the system's unique functions, and doesn't do much more than increase the number of titles available for the system.
Rating Description
4.0 Presentation
This is as generic an action adventure as you can get on the handheld systems, using the game's license and characters and then creating something barely average. The DS functionality is minimal.
6.5 Graphics
CG rendered sprites are used for smooth animation, but the environments are so sterile and bland. We'll give the DS version props for attempting some 3D effects.
7.0 Sound
The tunes are pretty well produced on the small speaker, but barely any sound samples are used from the flick.
4.5 Gameplay
It's just completely underwhelming and not very fun to play. Way too much dead space between exploring the world.
5.0 Lasting Appeal
The adventure is a good few hours through, and you can extend that with a few trips to the slow and drawn out transport mini-game.
4.5 OVERALL (out of 10 / not an average)
