Hot Shots Golf Japan demo out, Lair demo soon?
Added on 16/03/2007.
Yesterday Sony released the Hot Shots Golf 5 demo on the Japanese PlayStation Store.
If you don't have a Japanese PSN account yet, you should create one right now. The demo is 241MB, which shouldn't take you a long time to download. The demo has also been released on the Hong Kong PS Store, which is a lot easier to register with (unfortunately we can't confirm this).
Hot Shots Golf 5 will be out in Japan this July.
In other news, we may be seeing a Lair demo, hinted at by the image that popped up today:
Well take it as you will, we'll be sure to let you know when the developers confirm or deny the demo

I'm surprised that this topic doesn't already exist since I would have to assume another NYC GAFfer out there must have also given it a spin this afternoon. And since there was no NDAs signed...
It was my first real chance to play a PS3 game that fully utilized the Sixaxis, the motion sensors to be exact. Not sure how many around here has already played the game, but the build I test drove was as old as last weekend. I was told that the game was at 75%
First off, the game looked simply stunning. Everything just looked hella nice. Unfortunately, the frame rate was less than stellar. When I asked if it was going to optimized, I was told yes... that in the end, it will be a rock solid 30 fps. I was hoping for 60, and I guess it could higher, but it kinda seems that 30 it will be....
It was really funny how the demo person constantly reminded me how incredible it looked. "Check out all those polygons being pushed, and at 1080p!!!"
Two stages were demoed for me, first a big open air melee over the water and city that starts the game (I've seen screen of it posted in threads past, so no need to get into too many details I guess). The second takes place later on and has you facing off against this huge rock/statue/type-thing that shoots fire with various other dragons flying about. Kinda hard to explain but there were vague puzzle elements in this one: do one thing to trigger another thing to do another thing.
As for how it controls... as some may already know, you move the controller to move your dragon around. Tilt down to dive, tilt up to ascend, veer left and right to go that way. Not bad at all. But to do various moves, like shoot fire, bite enemies, enable berzerker rage, go into dragon-vision, lock onto enemies, you have to use the buttons, and I found the implementation to be kinda clumsy. Perhaps given sufficient time, one probably could get used to it, but I myself just didn't like the idea of moving the controller around to move, yet also using a bunch of buttons to execute actions. In my mind, either just use buttons (plus the sticks) or just move the controller and maybe only utilize one or two buttons.
Not helping things is how there are three different sets of controls. First is your general flying around and fighting regular enemies, and that's okay. Next is a duel mode in which you and one other dragon fly and fight against each other. At a certain point you have to quickly snap your controller in the air to "ram" into the other dragon, and it just felt awkward. The third is up close and personal combat, its kinda like Rock'em-Sock'em robots; just you and another dragon face-to-face punching each other. This time its nothing but button presses: light and strong attacks, plus fire once again. Again, the controls just feel like a jumbled mess. I guess they wanted to add some variety, but it just didn't click for me.
But again, the game looked great (something that Sony felt was pretty important). The animation and lighting effects were top-notch and everything looked amazing on a high-def set. Though besides the looks, it was... okay I guess. I was a big Panzer Dragoon fan of the day, and while this is certainly no Panzer, the idea of piloting dragons is something that could be fun.
