http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=275058Black Ops and Kinect giving 360 massive visability, says UK marketing boss
All eyes are on Xbox 360 this week as both Kinect and 'best on 360' shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops storm into the shops, says Microsoft.
Speaking to CVG at the midnight Kinect launch this week, UK marketing boss Stephen McGill said he expects both Black Ops and the motion sensor to dominate Christmas lists this year.
"I think [core gamers'] eyes are on Xbox and Kinect," he said when asked about a very busy week for consumers and retailers alike.
"They're on Xbox because the best place to play Black Ops is on Xbox 360 - it's the only place you're going to get that exclusive content first and that's a big deal for gamers. I think Kinect is a big deal for gamers too and I think they're interested in that too," he said.
"I think there's going to be a lot of Black Ops under Christmas trees and I think there's going to be a lot of Kinect under the Christmas tree."He added: "I think we're both going to have a great week and the key thing is retail are going to have a great week with both of the launches and I give our thanks to everyone who's opening the stores at midnight - they've got some long days and all credit to them."
Microsoft's previously estimated that Kinect will sell 5 million by the year's end, and McGill said he fully expects an immediate sell out of the device in the UK.
We also managed to corner Kinect creative lead, Kudo Tsunoda this week, who backed the marketing head's confidence over sales.
Na und? "I think" ist der Ausspruch der Woche anscheinend, denke ich![]()
Gamers around Europe have queued overnight to get their hands on Xbox Kinect, a new hands-free motion control system for the Xbox 360 console.
Stores opened at midnight for fans to buy the £130 (149 euro) controller, which Microsoft says offers a revolutionary new approach to gaming.
It uses a camera, motion sensors and a microphone to allow users to control the Xbox 360 without holding a device.
Kinect faces a battle with Nintendo's Wii Plus and Sony's Playstation Move.
Nintendo is launching a 3D version of its popular handheld DS console but that is not scheduled for release until March 2011.
Xbox's Chris Lewis: "What this does is broaden the appeal of Xbox".
Microsoft hopes Kinect and its stable of family-friendly games will win the company a dominant share of the lucrative Christmas market.
Stephen McGill, Microsoft's director of Xbox for the UK and Ireland, said Kinect would "revolutionise" home entertainment and communications.
"It's about technology getting out of the way, being incredibly invisible.
"So you just stand in front of the TV, or sit down, however you want to play, and you just move your body, the game responds to you. It's incredible.
"Playing Kinect is natural, intuitive and brilliantly fun, and we're very excited to bring it to hundreds of thousands of families across the country this Christmas."
Kinect-compatible games available in time for Christmas include Dance Central, in which players try to match moves they see on screen, as well a number of other titles suitable for children.
Kinect, which launched in the US a week ago, is now on sale in 23 European countries.
Simultaneous launches took place across Europe, with hundreds filling a historic square in Munich to celebrate.
In the UK, Xbox 360 fans queuing at a Game store in Milton Keynes overnight told the BBC's Newsbeat that the new controller would spice up their game-playing.
"I've had an Xbox for seven years and used to play it a lot but not so much any more. I'm just looking for something new so I want to try this," said Michael, 21, from Luton.
Mickey, 19, said the totally hands-free design was something genuinely new.
"It's a step up from what PS3 are doing at the moment with Move, which is a good concept, but you've still got a remote in your hand, and this is freehand."

http://www.el33tonline.com/past/2010/11/11/microsoft_launches_kinect_and_xbox/What do orange Barberton daisies, green and purple suckers and orange apricot sweets all have in common? The answer is quite simple really, they’re all the Xbox 360 colours and were lavishly spread out at Tuesday’s launch of Kinect and Xbox LIVE at the Urban Tree venue in Johannesburg, South Africa.
![]()
So in keeping with the Xbox 360 colours theme, there were brightly coloured Japanese lanterns hanging from the ceiling, purple couches and ottomans scattered around the venue and Avatar cardboard cutouts mingling among the crowd of journalists and guests who were also (mostly) decked out in the Xbox 360 colours to show their support of the brand.
Of course no launch would be complete without actually being able to play the games and so you could dive right in to Kinect and put this controller free gaming to the test for yourself. There were five Kinects up and running, and you could get stuck into Microsoft’s first party launch titles, including Kinectimals, Kinect Adventures, Kinect Joy Ride, Kinect Sports and Dance Central.
I turned my back for one second and two ladies painted from head to toe in silver body paint, complete with Xbox 360 tattoos and brightly coloured green hair, seemed to materialise out of thin air atop blocks in the venue. And just when you thought this party couldn’t get any more interesting, the melodic sounds of Caitlin van Pyre’s electric violin filled the air and she started to really get the party started with some truly awesome tunes.
The presentation kicked off at about five o’ clock and first up on stage was Mteto Nyati, the Managing Director of Microsoft South Africa. Nyati started with explaining how Microsoft needed to up their game on the consumer side of business. This plan was set in motion by the launch of Internet Explorer 7, Office 2010 and the Windows phone, which will be in stores by the beginning of December. He then went on to point out that you can now use your phone to play Xbox LIVE which he thinks is ‘cool.’ And finally Microsoft are very excited about the launch of Xbox LIVE and Kinect in South Africa. Nyati commented that collectively all Microsoft is offering demonstrates how serious they are as a company for consumers to earn value and set the bar higher

Yvette van Rooyen, Product and Marketing Manager for Xbox 360 South Africa, then took to the stage to discuss how gaming has gone from strength to strength, with music sales decreasing over the past nine years while movie box office sales have increased slightly and video game sales have increased by an incredible 200%.
Van Rooyen believes that this is the biggest year for Xbox and that it’s taken gaming to the next level. This is partly due to the launch of Halo: Reach, Fable III and finally Call of Duty: Black Ops (which launched worldwide on Tuesday), and we were shown three brilliant trailers from these top titles, as well as the new slim Xbox 360 console which was launched on the 30th September.

Robin Burrowes, Product and Marketing Manager for Europe and Middle East Africa, was up next. He began by discussing how Xbox LIVE was launching in eight other countries this week as well, bringing LIVE to 35 countries in total now. Although it was first launched in the US eight years ago, it’s been four years with no LIVE in South Africa. However, he believes the timing is spot on for LIVE with the launch of Kinect and to synchronize with the launch of Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Burrowes commented that there is ‘no better, more engaged online community’ and that the ‘sense of community on LIVE is easily one of its strong points.’ He then went on to highlight that it’s easy to play, with players being able to play what they want against anyone, that players can enjoy profiles and Gamerscore, as well local players being able to enjoy a few South African flavored Avatars. The Marketplace will also be new in South Africa and retailers will be stocking Microsoft Points while Microsoft will be working with publishers to ensure that the Game Marketplace is stocked.
![]()
There are currently 25 million Xbox LIVE users and Burrowes is confident that the launch of LIVE in South Africa and other countries will help to grow this community upwards. Last Christmas there were 2.2 million users on LIVE at the same time while between Christmas and New Years a new member will be joining every second. Pretty impressive figures there Microsoft.
Burrowes then took a few minutes to discuss the Migration system and announced that if South African Xbox 360 gamers migrate their accounts they will receive an additional 800 or 1600 Microsoft Points, based on your previous download history. He finished off by thanking the local community for its support.
![]()
Yvette then returned to the stage to discuss Kinect, which she described as a first for gaming, controller free gaming. Kinect will have fourteen titles at launch and she pointed out that third parties are getting behind the product, before moving on to discuss the bundling options. Kinect will be bundled with Kinect Adventures but you’ll also be able to purchase Kinect with Kinect Adventures bundled with a 4GB Xbox 360 console or with a 250GB console. Werner Joubert, the Xbox ambassador for South Africa, then gave a live demonstration on stage of the river rafting mini-game in Kinect Adventures.

Later in the evening Microsoft gave out copies of Alan Wake, FIFA 11 and Halo: Reach Limited Edition to a few lucky winners, as well as throwing Kinectimals plush toys into the audience.
But the really big winner was Brett from GEAR magazine who walked away with a new Xbox 360 console plus a Kinect and two games, well done Brett!
