Uhhh, ganz tolles Marketing.

Microsoft is working hard to make sure they have enough Kinect Stock this Christmas!

Microsoft must be pushing the limits of their production plants as they are promising they will have more Kinect stock than with any other Xbox launch. A Microsoft spokesman told MCV that they are working hard to meet the demand.

Over the course of just three weeks in November, we’re launching across every market where Xbox 360 is sold and will have more units of Kinect available than any other Xbox launch. Pre-orders have demonstrated that there is exceptional consumer excitement and demand for Kinect and we will continue to work hard to ensure that Kinect for Xbox 360 is available for the Christmas season.
As we reported earlier many UK stores already ran out of their pre-order stock, but additional Kinect kits have become available now. Hopefully, we’ll still be able to get Kinect at Christmas as Microsoft is also warning us of Kinect shortages. Feel free to see what Kinect’s availability is in your country right here. Don’t forget to checkout our full list of (planned) Kinect Games!

Can Microsoft Buy the Wii Audience?

If you haven’t heard it by now, Microsoft has revealed a $500 million marketing budget for their Kinect camera peripheral. Microsoft has made it clear: they want the Wii’s audience playing the XBox 360. Up to this point, the company has thrived off of a dedicated fan base. These are the people that have invested countless dollars into monthly releases, keeping the 360 a top contender in NPD software sales from month to month. The 360 has been the console where software thrives. This has been the case for nearly 5 years since the system’s launch in 2005.

Originality isn't everything
Fast forward to June 2010. It is E3 and Microsoft is doing an odd impression of Nintendo circa 2008. In the span of nearly 90 minutes, Microsoft delivers to gamers a press conference meant to excite those that do not play games. It was not until the company promised audience members a newly redesigned 360 that genuine cheers were unanimously heard. Microsoft, who had been a company that seemed to understand where its bread and butter was, spent most of the show catering to an audience that was not listening.

Kinect ruled the roost that day. It was a day of Mii-too’s. Almost every page of Nintendo’s playbook this generation was ripped out and re-presented with a green tint. Nearly every major success Nintendo has had in the past 6 years was on the show floor in a prettier dress. Everything from Wii Sports to Nintendogs, Microsoft had it covered.

Case in point, Microsoft had staked its claim to Nintendo’s casual audience.

Why?
Why, after 4.5 years of strong bonds with their base, was Microsoft pandering to the Wii crowd? The answer is quite simple: It’s bigger.

In less than a year on the market, Nintendo managed to outsell Microsoft’s console (then over a year old) in a matter of months. This continued for years on out. Microsoft, who had once dismissed motion gaming, had now made it a priority for their console’s future success.

The casual market is much broader and encompasses an age range much bigger than 16-30 year-olds. The goal of the original XBox was for Microsoft to take over the living room. The living room is much more 8-80 than it is hardcore gamer.

Another reason for Kinect’s existence is that it may possibly allow Microsoft to extend the life of the 360 by several years, if successful. The 360, which is already much more profitable than the original XBox, may possibly live on through 2012 or 2013. It should be noted that the 360 is about to celebrate its 5 year anniversary. 5 years is the typical lifespan of most video game systems, that is, until recently. Console manufacturers are reluctant to introduce new hardware. It costs more money and is almost equivalent to starting all over. To put this into perspective: 6 years ago Sony was the far away leader of the generation with the PS2 and people were seriously questioning whether or not Nintendo would become a third party publisher. Simply put, it’s much cheaper to represent an old system in a new package.

Is it too late?
Microsoft is without a doubt going after the same 70+ million people that own a Wii. The Wii, however, was launched nearly 4 years ago. What are the company’s chances for success in this endeavor? The Wii, which has been a runaway success bigger than even Nintendo could have predicted, has finally seen a consistent sales slow-down in North America.

What you may be able to take from this is that those who wanted a Wii own one. The market has leveled out. The Wii was sold on the idea that anyone can play video games. The controller was made to look like a television remote. The controller was one of the major turnoffs for many that had yet to play a video game. It was too complex. With Kinect, Microsoft took that idea a step further by eliminating the controller altogether. From the short term perspective, the idea is brilliant. No controller is even easier to understand than a motion controller.

If it ain't broke, steal it.
From a long-term perspective, however, the idea seems very short-sighted. The great majority of games are played with controllers and will continue to be for the unforeseeable future. One of the promises of the Wii was that the casual games games would act as a bridge to the more complex games, thus creating “gamers.” If Kinect is operating on a similar strategy, however, Microsoft is fighting a very steep, uphill battle. Getting casuals to go from games requiring no controller to complex games requiring the use of a 10-button, dual analogue stick controller sounds like a pipe-dream.

This is all without taking into account one of the Wii’s biggest challenges: Selling software. Most of the casuals that bought a Wii, did so for one game: Wii Sports. There is many a consumer out there that bought a Wii for this game alone and never bought another game for the console again. This has been a problem Nintendo has yet to fully wrap its head around. It is also a problem Microsoft is diving head-first into. Kinect, which will retail for $150 USD, comes packaged with the game Kinect Adventures. It is an interesting decision on behalf of Microsoft. After all, they have employed Rare to create what is practically a direct copy of Wii Sports for Kinect, yet have chosen an unproven “Adventure” game to lead the charge. This could mean that the company does not believe Kinect Sports can stand on its own in the market. It could also mean that they believe Kinect Adventures will do well enough selling people on the technology on its own.

Has the Casual Boom Ended?
The fact is that Microsoft is treating a 4-year-old market like the ideas being presented are brand new. The company is going for the Wii’s casual audience. These are the same people with no concern for which system has graphical superiority. The Wii now comes packaged with 2 of the most popular games of the generation and retails for $200. Even at $300, the 360/Kinect bundle asks a lot from supposed newcomers to gaming. One would think that those that were too intimidated to play before finally did so with the Wii. It is unlikely that a $300 console and prettier graphics changed any minds that were intimidated with Wii Sports.

However, despite the mountains Kinect must climb, it seems to be doing well for an unreleased peripheral at the moment. It has been reported that Kinect pre-orders have sold out in several locations around the UK. It also doesn’t hurt that Microsoft has promised a huge amount of money towards the goal of making Kinect a success. The marketing budget alone guarantees the sales of many cameras for Microsoft. Expect to see a nauseating amount of Wii-like Kinect commercials for at least the next 2 months.

$500 million is a huge investment for any entertainment company. Whether or not it can buy you an entire market will be decided by the consumers within the next 6-12 months. Microsoft definitely has the funds to keep this project going well into the indefinite future. Whether or not they can convince consumers that their take on the Wii is worth their money is something we can look forward to finding out soon.

Navigation Controller for Kinect?

Microsoft has been aggressively promoting their upcoming hands-free motion controlling device, Kinect. Touting such phrases as "You are the controller" and "The Future of gaming". Sony has countered these claims by not only releasing their own motion controller, the Playstation Move, but have gone on the record saying that motion controlling "does just not work without buttons". All of the tech demos we have seen on Kinect have shown games that are completely contoller-free. Kudo Tsunoda, who is basically the "face" of Kinect, by acting as the peripherals spokesman and all but mascot of Kinect, Tsunoda stated in an interview with Joystiq.com that: "games that involve both controllers and Kinect as well are totally possible."
(Joystiq.com) We thought about this approach and here are our thoughts on how this could really work, and turn Kinect into something a lot of skeptics have not envisioned.

large amount of core gamers have been writing Kinect off as the "Playstation Eyetoy 1.5" in forums on the web. It's hard to blame them, since pretty much everything we've seen does not deviate too far from what the Eyetoy brought into our living rooms. We're not saying that's the case, however, Sony does have a point when they state that it's difficult to be interactive with only a camera to control on-screen movements. You're limited to what the camera can sense from your body movements. This was why Sony chose to pass on Kinect's technology, and go with Dr. Marks and his creation of the Move, which utilizes a camera, a wand and an optional navigational controller. Of course, we've seen small snippets of Kinect taking a different route and using your "gear", by scanning it with the Kinect camera and then being able to use it, in-game. That's a whole different article, but it is a part of Kinect's technology that we hope is used by developers and used well.

The controller pictured above, is one that was created by Ben Heck (.BenHeck.com) for the movie, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. We here at ASGgaming.com are huge fans of Mr. Heck and his ingenious work. Although Mr. Heck made the controller to be utilized as the left side of the original Xbox 360 controller, something as simple as this could be perfectly used with Kinect. If you only needed a few simple button inputs, much like the Nintendo Wii Nunchuck, or the Sony Move Navigation controller, this would be right up Kinect's alley. Microsoft has a lot of money for marketing, why not hire Ben Heck to make a little something for Kinect?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.jpg

We believe that some Kinect games will exclusively use and require a controller to be played. Even if MS does not create a controller like Sony's Navigational Controller for the Playstation Move, we might be using the already adequate Xbox 360 controller in conjunction with the Kinect camera. Much like we already use the Dualshock 3 controller on Move games in lieu of a navigation controller.

imagesCA6CGTCR.jpg

So let's just imagine here for a moment how this might work.

You are playing a Kinect game, you've got your Kinect camera set up. The game is a third-person action game. Your controller is being used as it would in a typical 360 game. You come to a point in the game with a puzzle that needs to be solved in order for you to proceed. You lift your right hand off of the controller to move the levers or whatever it is that needs to be manipulated.

You could be playing an FPS, you come to a point where a grenade needs to be thrown, so you pick up that foam Nerf basketball laying next to you on the floor and toss it at the on-screen enemy (notice how said FOAM, as in virtually weightless, harmless foam ball).

You're playing the next big boxing game for Kinect, and you can opt to either use the controller to fight, or the camera to shadow box and throw virtual punches, or you can switch from one to the other on the fly in case you get tired. Working on your boxer as a cut-man could be interesting as well. You could apply the end-swell or Vaseline yourself in the critically damaged areas. These are just a few ideas, but we think you get what we're trying to say. The possibilities are endless, we hope someone will step up to the plate and take these ideas and run with them.

Kinect will sink or swim depending ultimately on the games and how easily and/or effectively we will be able to control the on screen characters and their movements. It's all going to come down to the imaginations of those developing them and how they utilize Kinects features. Sure, it's going to probably sell boat-load based on Microsoft's marketing powerhouse alone, but after the initial buzz, MS is going to need to give Kinect consumers a reason to stick around. Only time will tell, and we're staying optimistic for the time being. We'll give you our impressions and full review when we get our Kinect camera in-house.

Danke MS! :-)

Checking out the latest in gaming technology, Ashley Tisdale attended the Kinect for XBox 360 Launch Party in Beverly Hills on Saturday night (October 23).

Held at a private residence, the "Aliens In the Attic" actress looked in a cheerful mood as she partied it up after spending the earlier part of the day at meetings and shopping at Planet Blue with her mom.

Aside from her busy weekend happenings, you can catch Ashley and her co-stars on an all-new "Hellcats" episode titled "The Match Game" airing on The CW on Wednesday (October 27) at 9/8c.

A synopsis via the show's website tells: "Desperate to raise funds to get them to Nationals, the Hellcats plan a date auction. However, things take a unexpected turn after Savannah's (Ashley Tisdale) old boyfriend Noah (guest star) shows up and outbids Dan (Matt Barr), Morgan wins a date with a horrified Marti (Aly Michalka) and Vanessa (Sharon Leal) is bid on by a mystery man whom she suspects is Red (Jeff Hephner) trying to win her back. Vanessa frets over whether to tell Derrick (D.B. Woodside) about the date as the money will cover the trip to Nationals for the Hellcats.
