Starting on the Next Generation
According to several game development sources, game publishers are already in discussions with both Sony and Microsoft, as the two hardware manufacturers groom and partner with publishers for the next big round of consoles, the PlayStation 3 and presumably Xbox 2 (just a wild guess, of course). Yes, as amazing as it sounds, both Microsoft and Sony are in early discussions with publishers even if the hardware is only in the design stages.
Last Call for Nintendo?
The interesting thing, though, is where is Nintendo in all these new hardware talks? Yes, Sony and Microsoft are going to be fighting for your living room well into the 3000s, but where is Nintendo? It's our theory, and it's no longer an original one at this point, that Nintendo will probably become a software-only company after the GameCube's run on the market, retiring its Draconian hardware ways for a pure software existence, much in the same way that Sega turned "console agnostic."
