PS3 Heavenly Sword (PS3)

Ja, HS wird regionfree sein-ist auch schon länger bekannt! ;)

@mrfreeman:

:rofl4: Sei lieber still!

Heavenly Sword Review: Part 1

You’d think a game that starts at the end of the story would be a little predictable and boring right? Well you’re wrong shame on you. Heavenly Sword has a story that by its self is not that spectacular and most of the game is played in the past (before the opening scene) yet the way that the story is told and the richness of the character development left me in awe, in fact it is made so well that the cut-scenes (which I usually loath) are so great that I wanted more and more of them, it was better than most movies, it draws you in and makes you love even the villainous tyrants that you are fighting against. Great graphics, grotesque monsters, bewbs and more equate to an A+++ title for the PS3. If you own a PS3 it is a happy day for you. If you don’t you might want to check this out.

Nariko is the fiery lead in Heavenly Sword, she’s hot and she likes to kick butt. The start of the game finds her in a field full of foes (how’s that for alliteration?) she get to hack and slash through these enemies by wielding the Heavenly Sword, a sacred sword that her clan has protected for generations. Using the sword comes with a problem, death, that’s a bit of an issue in most cases, and so the story commences with the death of the Heroine. Most of the story is played out in flashbacks over the five days preceding the opening sequence. The antagonist is King Bohan, a ruthless ruler that wishes to destroy every clan that stands in his way, and specifically the clan of Master Shen (Nariko’s father) so that he can claim the Heavenly Sword for his own evil purposes. The second playable character is Kai, she is a socially awkward youth that has a gift for shooting goons with her rather impressive crossbow. There are three main bosses, and while I won’t go into too much detail I will talk about one of them because he deserves mention. Flying Fox, slightly effeminate and emaciated with blades, structured in a wing like fashion that extrude from his back, he is definitely one of the most interesting video game characters ever created, the way he talks, moves and interacts with the other NPC’s or the leads is absolutely awesome, not only do you get the sense that he is evil but that he thoroughly enjoys it.

The graphics in Heavenly Sword show the difference between the quality of current generation and those of the generation on the way out. Compare it to God of War 2, it’s not a small difference, it’s a jump that you would expect when you are paying several hundreds of dollars for a console to play it on. The environments that you actually can roam in are not that large, but in most cases they have a sweeping vista of the local that, for a hefty percentage of the game, is a stunning mountainous area with water falls and epic towers and pillars. If you have played the demo you will get the general idea if you look around. One of the really neat things that they have done to showcase the environments and make it feel like you are in one part of a very large area is to start a few of the missions by using the camera angle in a combination of panning and zooming from far out in towards Nariko into the normal camera position, magic. Some of the detail is lost because of the zoomed out camera angle during play, but is recaptured in the instances that the “after touch” mechanism is used (more on this soon)
The controls are simple, yet the timing and use of the appropriate combination will see you making head way into the swarms of enemies. If you don’t watch what your enemies are doing and try and mash your way through you will die a most miserable death. There are three stances that can be used: the default stance is the speed stance, your attacks are quick but will not break the block of the enemy without using a combination. The power-stance is where real fun starts, these blows are slower than the speed attacks but deal some impressive damage, and often knock the opponent off their feet, which lets you deal a death blow while they are down if you can get to them fast enough. The ranged attack lets you hit multiple people at a distance but does minimal damage and has only two basic combinations, one of the things that the ranged stance does offer is the possibility of aerial attacks, these are started by knocking the opponent into the air, then you shake the six-axis controller and push your buttons to do some crazy stuff.

Now for a really good time, counter attacks and super style moves. A counter attack is simple and all you need to do is allow Nariko to block an incoming blow, and then at the right time hit Triangle. Depending what stance you are in, she will make the appropriate counter. Super style takes counter blows and offensive moves to a whole new level. The Circle is the key to remember, at the start of the game style attacks are an impressive way of removing one opponent from the arena of combat. As you increase Nariko’s level her attacks become not only more powerful but also more intricate and enjoyable to watch. My favorite style move involves her chains wrapping around the ankles of an enemy, who is then pinned down with back to the ground and legs spread, the heavenly sword is then used to cleave the victim from the groin to the belly button (camera angle makes it look gruesome without too much detail).
So, there you have the first of this two part review, the final segment will be up in the next week or two with an in-depth look into specific features such as the cinematic sequences, more info on Kai’s role as a playable character and the integration of Sixaxis. Plus a final summary of the good bad and ugly.
