Gunstringer: Kinect's Western Shooter

The developer of 'Splosion Man is pulling our strings.

What is Gunstringer?
Gunstringer is a Kinect game from Twisted Pixel, developer of 'Splosion Man and Comic Jumper. It looks quite different than the other Kinect games we've seen so far.

The Gunstringer
What type of game is it?
It's a cross between a platformer and a shooter starring a skeleton cowboy that you puppeteer with your hands. There appears to be a lot of on-rails shooting sequences. The action on screen is supposed to be a puppet show, complete with an audience cheering you on.

What's the story?
Somebody did The Gunstringer wrong, and he's gonna make 'em pay. It's a Western revenge story inspired by "A Fistful of Dollars."

How do the Kinect controls work?
Based on the trailer, we know that you'll be holding your hands out in front of you as if you were controlling a marionette. Looks like you'll also be mimicking actions like spinning your revolver. It's unclear at this time how shooting is handled.

Will Gunstringer be a retail or downloadable game?
Twisted Pixel isn't revealing this, yet. All of the developer's previous releases have been downloadable from Xbox Live Arcade. We know there are multiple downloadable Kinect games in the works from various developers, but so far Kinect software is only available at retail.

Is there multiplayer?
Looks like there is a cooperative mode where two players shoot at enemies in on-rails sequences.

When's it coming out?
Twisted Pixel hasn't announced a release date for Gunstringer yet.

nach der grafik zu urteilen wird es wohl ein xbla game

The Gunstringer marries all of this with really fresh and fun gameplay mechanics. From the start of this project, we’ve focused on getting across the feel of marionetting a puppet’s movement through a 3D world, then mixing that with the fun and mayhem of targeting-focused shooters like Rez. One minute you’ll be navigating the Gunstringer over tricky ravines or towards secret paths, the next you’ll be ducking behind cover to take out a half-dozen clockwork alligators with your six shooter.

As you may have already gathered, The Gunstringer is unlike any Kinect game you may have played previously. There are no minigames, forced gestures, or end of level photos of you in your underwear here. You can play it sitting down, which is great if you just want to play and relax rather than burn crazy calories. Most importantly, you can aim and move with precision not seen in any of the Kinect launch titles, and with a speed and feel that’s just not possible with a traditional controller.

This is what we set out to do with The Gunstringer. Marionetting isn’t about binary actions like “move in this direction at x speed”, it’s about the analog feel of a puppet. Because of that, we ended up building a unique control system that uses your hand, wrist, arm and shoulder to determine how to move the Gunstringer through the environment.

The Gunstringer branded an Xbox Live Arcade title on Xbox.com

gunstringer-xblm-overview-530w.jpg

Twisted Pixel has yet to confirm the distribution method for its forthcoming puppeteer Western for Kinect, The Gunstringer, but the title's Xbox.com listing (pictured) indicates that the game is bound for Xbox Live Arcade. If accurate, this would make The Gunstringer the first American-developed Kinect title confirmed for XBLA (don't forget about those planned XBLA Kinect games from Japan); though it wouldn't be a huge surprise, given that all of TP's games have either been released on or are in development for XBLA.

Twisted Pixel has declined to comment on the listing, leaving a little suspense in the air.

Hoffentlich hats genug Content.
