EXCLUSIVE: Microsoft To Lay Off 1,500 In California; 200 In L.A.

Microsoft, via an email from departing CEO Jerry Yang, told its California employees that on Wednesday, as many as 1,500 employees will be tossed, inside sources confided to FBLA.

No details were available regarding the email, but one employee who read it said Yang talked about the need to make cutbacks. This was in keeping with his statement in mid-November that Yahoo! would have to layoff as much as 10% of its global workforce. He targeted Dec. 10 as D-Day for these employees.

In her technology blog All Things Digital, Kara Swisher said Yang had told her in October that layoffs were a distinct possibility and described them as "consolidation and organizational corrections."

"We're asking ourselves -- should we sell it or should we shut it down?" Yang said. "That is the kind of comprehensive look we are doing across the company."

The layoffs, which could ultimately number as high as 2,000, are generally across the board, but human resources will likely take the biggest hit because their expenses are cost-based and most of their costs are staff.

Swisher said employees will be told Wednesday, but FBLA sources saw the email on Monday afternoon. Staff is supposedly allowing for a "normal seperation period," but that could mean that employees will have to exit within a few hours of being told.

Swisher's sources said Yahoo executives are not expecting any serious problems like extremely upset employees because the layoffs have been long in coming. Security will be present, however, at its Sunnyvale headquarters and presumably in Los Angeles.

Most employees do not know if they will be let go yet, Swisher maintained, because the cuts have not yet been made public.

Microsoft is playing it close to the vest because entire projects might be eliminated and the secrecy allows time to restructure further if necessary.

Swisher conjectures that rumors have surfaced of whole divisions being juggled among the bigger managers presumably to stake out territory before a new CEO is installed.

Meanwhile, Yang has not officially left his slot, though he said last month that he was planning on leaving.

Sehr guter Vorschlag, ich hoffe Sony nimmt das an...

Sony Cuts 8,000 Jobs — Time to Cut the PS3, Too?

With the economy deep in the throes of a recession, the only question these days is who — or what — is next? Today it was Sony’s turn, which, citing “the sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment,” said it’s laying off 8,000 employees in its electronics division and shuttering 10 percent of its manufacturing facilities. In the subsequent corporate restructuring to come, “unprofitable or non-core businesses” are in the firing line, Game Industry Biz reports — most notably, the company’s Playstation division is under review.

What this means is too soon to tell, but if you were to ask me, I’d say it’s time for Sony to walk away from the Playstation 3 as much as possible. Its $400 price point is uniquely ill-suited for these recessionary times, and while the company could lower that MSRP, it already loses $130-$260 on each sale (depending on who you believe.) Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 sold twice as many units as the PS3 in October, the most recent month for which data is available (though both consoles trail far behind the Wii.) With the PS3’s install base so small in comparison, and the appeal of its highly touted Blu-ray drive questionable at best, it’s hard to see Sony benefiting from Playstation 3.

I checked in with Wedbush Morgan game analyst Michael Pachter to get his take; he thinks that with the PS3, Sony has “too much at stake to walk away.” Instead, he continued in his email message, the company needs to “plug away until manufacturing efficiencies allow them to be cost competitive. I don’t see them taking many risks over the next few years, but think that they can get by with a relatively lean operation until they become profitable.”

Maybe so. I think Sony could invest more resources in its Playstation 2 line, which is still selling almost as well as the PS3, and can easily be revamped into an attractive, cheap alternative to the Wii. Even at an $130 MSRP, Sony sells the PS2 at a profit, and the line’s record-breaking install base of 140 million units means a large audience to which Sony can sell peripherals and upgrades.

Whatever they decide, Sony has some tough choices to make. Of course that’s true for most game companies nowadays, but since Sony’s stuck with the white elephant called the Playstation 3, that pain will be all the more keen.

Sony - Stellenabbau
1,1 Milliarden US-Dollar sollen gespart werden

10.12.2008, 14:59

Sony to Sell Bonds First Time in Nearly Three Years

Dec. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., the world’s second- largest consumer-electronics maker, is preparing to sell its first bond in almost three years to help refinance maturing debt, a company official said.

The timing and amount of bonds to be sold in Japan haven’t been decided, said the official, who declined to be identified before an official announcement. The Tokyo-based company will use proceeds from the planned sale to help cover the costs of redeeming 250 billion yen ($2.7 billion) in convertible bonds coming due Dec. 18, the official said.

The offering would test demand for Japanese corporate debt after the credit crisis led the world’s second-largest economy into its first recession since 2001 and drove down November corporate bond sales 45 percent from a year earlier. Sony, which announced a reorganization plan yesterday, is turning to the bond market as falling demand for electronics erodes earnings.

“For lots of companies, issuing a straight bond would be difficult,” said Nobuo Kurahashi, an analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co. in Tokyo. “As long as the terms aren’t extreme, it’s not a negative.”

The company, led by Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer, yesterday said it will eliminate 16,000 jobs as part of plans to reduce costs by more than 100 billion yen annually and said a “much” larger-than-anticipated deterioration in the economy may force it to revise its profit targets.

Sony rose 1.1 percent to close at 1,917 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, paring its drop for the year to 69 percent. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average climbed 3.2 percent.

Cash

“It’s better to issue a straight bond than to try and redeem the convertible bond just using cash on hand,” Kurahashi said.

Sony had 700.9 billion yen in cash on hand as of the end of September. The company last sold bonds in February 2006, when it raised 100 billion yen, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Moody’s Investors Service today lowered the outlook for Sony’s A2 debt rating to stable from positive, citing risks associated with poor market conditions. Sony’s restructuring plans would help “mitigate negative impacts” from the global economic slowdown, Moody’s said.

“If the bond terms are too severe, they can think of other ways to raise funds,” said Hideyuki Suzuki, an analyst at Morningstar Japan K.K.

Nomura Holdings Inc., Nikko Citigroup Ltd. and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group will co-manage the planned sale, the Sony official said.

Sony sued for collecting kids data

Don't sign up with strangers?

Sony BMG is being sued in the US for collecting data on children without their parents' consent. A $1m payout to settle the suit is reportedly close to agreement, Bloomberg reports.

Information on 30,000 kids under 13 was allegedly collected by music labal Sony BMG Music Entertainment in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. A lawsuit, filed by US consumer watchdog the Federal Trade Commission in a New York court on Wednesday, seeks an injunction against Sony and unspecified damages.

The legal claims that Sony collected the information from youngsters registering with any of the 1,100 music and band-related websites it has run since 2004, despite claims that pre-pubescent teens weren't allowed to sign up. Potentially sensitive data including names, addresses, email addresses, dates of birth and even mobile phone numbers was reportedly logged.

Citing unnamed insiders as a source, Bloomberg reports that Sony BMG is on the verge of agreeing a settlement. Sony is reportedly offering to hire a compliance officer to establish procedures to prevent the collection of data on kids, and pay $1m in fines, in order to settle the lawsuit
