Konami announces Foto Showdown for Nintendo DSi

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced Foto Showdown for Nintendo DSi™. Players utilize the Nintendo DSi’s camera functionality to snap photos and incorporate them directly into the gameplay in this action packed, battle tested RPG for kids of all ages.

Foto Showdown allows players to snap photos with the Nintendo DSi which uses advanced color recognition to spawn monsters based on the dominant colors in those photos. Players pit their battle tested monsters against rivals in no-holds-barred turn based duels that put the unique powers of each monster to the test. As players progress through more than 100 levels, winning tournaments and beating opponents, they’ll be able to upgrade their powers, purchase more powerful weapons, add medicine and tools providing the ability to wreak greater havoc on their duelist partner! The longer you play the stronger you get.

“With Foto Showdown, Konami continues to bring innovative games to the market that allows consumers the opportunity to play a more active role in how the game progresses and develops,” said David Daniels, Marketing Director for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “The built-in camera of Nintendo DSi lends itself perfectly to the gameplay, encouraging creative photography, where the photos have lasting effects on the total experience limited only by the users imagination.”

Players can simultaneously fight with up to six monsters at a time and become progressively stronger as they win battles, ultimately collecting up to 152 different monsters each with unique abilities. Players will be thrust into fast and furious tournaments and compete to win three kinds of cameras that open new levels and new monsters. Visit the store to buy or sell monsters and purchase an array of upgrades and equipment making your collection of monsters a fearless force of destruction. Connecting via local wireless connection allows gamers to unleash a multiplayer face-off or swap battle hardened monsters from their decks.

Foto Showdown is scheduled for release in Q1 2010 for Nintendo DSi.

Shantae-Default-Prime-618x380.jpg

Everything is pushed back into 2010 nowadays; it is the cool the to do. Unfortunately Wayforward has decided to hold Shantae: Risky’s Revenge back until Q1 2010 according to Nintendo Power. As of right now we are not sure why the DSiWare exclusive title was delayed, but the more time they put into it the better. Until then Shantae fans will just have to keep on waiting for the sequel to the original Gameboy Color title.

Cross Treasures Gets a Bonus

Square Enix shared details today on a bonus item for its V Jump tie-up DS title Cross Treasures. Those who pre-order will get a silver sticker featuring artwork from Shinya Suzuki, creator of the manga version of the game.

There's more than meets the eye with this sticker, though. Look at it from the right angle, and you'll see a secret spell which can be used in the game to get a rare item.

First announced in August, Cross Treasures is a multiplayer RPG that promises a high level of customization, both for its characters and worlds. The game is a collaborative project between Square Enix and monthly comic magazine V Jump.

A demo of Cross Treasures was available in the Square Enix booth at the Tokyo Game Show. The game is set for December 3 release, but Square Enix announced today that visitors to Jump Festa later in the month can still look forward to a demo and special video. Suzuki will also take the stage at the event for a special talk session.

Next Next Layton Game Revealed

2132389122.jpg

Level-5 is set to give Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute the big red carpet premiere treatment tonight, just ahead of the game's release tomorrow. But before that, word has leaked from Famitsu about the next Layton game.

Titled Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the followup is said to feature some big system changes from Devil's Flute. Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino told the magazine that the game has something to do with the mask worn by villain Death Call in Devil's Flute.

Even Famitsu was unable to get a full reveal on the game, with its scoop limited to just the logo and a piece of artwork. The art shows what appears to be a carnival, with Layton and Luke looking on from the side.

A release for the second part in the new Layton trilogy is set for Fall, 2010.

Hino will, of course, be at tonight's premiere event. Perhaps he'll share a few additional details.

Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute sees release tomorrow as the fourth game in Level-5's wildly successful mind bending puzzle series. Reason to celebrate? For Level-5, it certainly is, and the Fukuoka developer is doing just that via a big premiere event at the Tokyo International Forum.

The event kicked off at 17:30 with a ten minute red carpet welcome for Layton voice cast Yo Oizumi (Layton), Maki Horikita (Luke), Saki Aibu (Remi), Nao Minamisawa (Yura), and Atsuro Watabe (Death Call).

Currently, the press and some lucky members of the general public are waiting for the 19:00 start of the main event. Level-5 has filled the large main theater of the Forum to capacity for this event, and they'll be giving everyone a copy of Devil's Flute as a parting gift.

Level-5's invite promises a greeting by CEO Akihiro Hino, to be followed by a talk session with the voice actors, and a live performance of the game's ending theme by Yuko Ando.

It's possible that Hino will also touch upon the Layton game to follow Devil's Flute. Titled Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the game is featured in tomorrow's Weekly Famitsu. Early leaks suggest that Level-5 will be making some big changes to the gameplay systems.

The focus of today's Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute premier event was on tomorrow Layton game, but Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino did make mention of future developments for the popular series.

As reported earlier, the next Layton game to follow Devil's Flute will be "Kiseki no Kamen," or "Miracle Mask." Hino shared artwork and a logo for the game, but refrained from getting into specifics.

Miracle Mask is set in Casino City, a city was created by the magic power of the Miracle Mask of the title. The Miracle Mask is the same mask that's worn by Devil's Flute villain Death Call.

The game appears to be centered on the mask, which it is said can grant the wishes of its possessors and has lead to a string of mysterious incidents. "The truth is hidden deep within the mask," reads the game's official description on materials handed out to the press today.

A report on the game in this week's Famitsu says that the tried and true Layton gameplay systems will see some major changes this time around. Hino did not provide clarification at today's event.

This next next Layton game arrives in Fall 2010.

Level-5's plans for Layton go beyond games. The first Layton movie, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, hits theaters in late December. A second movie could follow. While not strictly committing to a second movie, Hino said that the "second season" of the Layton series, which begins with Devil's Flute, was imagined with another movie.

Based off a chart shown at the event, the second movie would follow the release of Miracle Mask but come before the release of the as-yet unnamed third Layton game.

Layton will also be involved in a major tie-up shortly with McDonalds. As part of Nintendo's DS at Mac online service, visitors to McDonalds restaurants will be able to download three original puzzles, view an art gallery from the Eternal Diva movie, and take a quiz about the Layton series.

The McDonalds tie-up will run from 1/8 to 1/28. A different puzzle will be available every week during this period. To play the puzzles, you'll have to have your DS and a copy of Devil's Flute. The other content requires just the DS.

The Layton series has sold 7.9 million units worldwide, Hino said at the event. Only the first two games have been released outside of Japan.
