TOMY Corporation today announced that Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 is currently in development exclusively for Nintendo DS. As the latest installment to the popular Ninja Council series of videogames that has sold more than 800,000 units to date in North America, Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 is the first DS game to feature the Naruto Shippuden story arc in North America, allowing fans to play as Naruto and his friends in the next generation of the series. Based on the enormously successful animated series from VIZ Media, Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 introduces consumers to a host of playable characters sporting their updated Naruto Shippuden looks, and wireless multiplayer battles for up to four players.

"Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 encourages franchise fans and newcomers alike to experience the next iteration of the classic Ninja Council series," said Laura Yoshioka, director of consumer software at TOMY Corporation. "The addition of multiple new playable characters and an immersive story mode based on the Naruto Shippuden story arc, coupled with the touch screen capabilities of the DS, make this a classic action-adventure videogame."

In Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4, players will experience the new Shippuden storyline for the first time on the DS. Set two and a half years after the events of the classic Naruto series, Naruto fans are introduced to older characters as the storyline advances and unfolds with copious plot twists. Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 also allows gamers to follow an older Naruto and his friends on the quest to save Gaara from the sinister Akatsuki organization. Players are able to choose their allies and form a three-man squad with special jutsu techniques to ward off looming danger. Dedicated franchise fans and new Naruto fighters alike can utilize the touch screen to unleash their unique jutsu attacks and take on anyone that gets in their way. As an added bonus, unlockable jutsu allows aspiring ninjas to explore previously unreachable areas.

Naruto Shippuden: Ninja Council 4 will be available for Nintendo DS in Spring 2009.

200 MILLION SCREENS SOLD

Somewhere around two hundred million Nintendo DS screens have been sold worldwide (keeping the odd replacement screens aside), as Nintendo of America revealed that the 100 millionth Nintendo DS unit has been shipped.

Somewhere - perhaps in Chicago, maybe in Paris, possibly in Tokyo - the 100 millionth system in the Nintendo DS franchise has been shipped to a distributor or a retailer as of March 6, 2009. The combined total sales of 100 million Nintendo DS systems, Nintendo DS Lite systems and Nintendo DSi systems represent a significant milestone in the life of this franchise, which is still going strong.

"Consumers have shown their love for Nintendo DS - 100 million times over," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are grateful that people of all ages continue to respond to our products, and we will continue to look for ways to please current gamers and create new ones."

Since the original Nintendo DS launched in late 2004, its dual screens, touch screen and voice-recognition capabilities ushered in an era of new experiences not previously possible on portable systems. The successor, Nintendo DS Lite, launched with a slimmer, trimmer look.

The third iteration of the Nintendo DS hardware, Nintendo DSi, launches in the United States three and a half weeks from now on April 5. Nintendo DSi includes two cameras and the ability to record, manipulate and play sound files, and will allow consumers to personalize their very own Nintendo DSi experiences. It will again transform the way people access, experience, create and share portable content.

From the beginning, consumers around the world responded to the novel software options available on Nintendo DS. This is reflected by the fact that as of Dec. 31, 2008, there were 83 DS titles whose global shipment exceeded 1 million. Seven of these titles topped 10 million. Experiences like Nintendogs and the Brain Age series began a paradigm shift for the industry, as video games grew beyond the traditional audience of young men to include girls, adult men and women - and even seniors. Traditional games like New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS keep people coming back for more. Nintendo DS games demonstrate an "evergreen" quality: They frequently remain in the top-selling lists, months - or even years - after their launch. The system continues to expand into new territory with titles such as those in the Personal Trainer series.

GameLoft Enters the DSiWare Market

medium.jpg

As the release of the DSi early next month approaches, news of developers hopping aboard the DSiWare wagon continues to pour in.

GameLoft is the newest developer to toss their hat into the ring, as some snooping on the PEGI website will reveal.

It looks like Europe will be getting Pop Superstar: Road to Celebrity, which is classed as a "life simulation." Pop Superstar has also been released as a mobile game, allowing players to create an up-and-coming singing sensation, guiding the character to fame.

The other game Europeans can expect is Real Football 2009, another game you may remember from mobile phones, which featured more than 200 teams, several different stadiums, and mobile-to-mobile multiplayer. (No guarantee that the latter feature will be retained in the DSiWare release, but it sure would be nice.)

We've also heard whispers that GameLoft intends to release Uno to DSiWare (and WiiWare) this year. So keep an eye on this site, as always, and we will continue to bring you this information as soon as it becomes available.

Analyst: GTA Chinatown to Sell 2m in U.S.

gta_cw_drugs_3.jpg

The DS audience is skewed towards a younger demographic, but there are still millions of adult DS owners who may pick up the M-rated Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars from Rockstar Games, reckons analyst Doug Creutz with Cowen and Company.

Currently, the game, launched today, is earning an initial average review score of 95 percent. "If the title’s subsequent reviews are consistent with the initial critical response, Chinatown Wars would be the highest rated title on the DS to date," Creutz wrote in a research note.

"...The strong critical rating will likely increase the game’s chances of becoming a commercial hit. We continue to estimate that GTA: Chinatown Wars will sell 2 million first year U.S. units."

The U.S. installed base for the DS is over 27 million units.

Creutz also said that Take-Two's ability to release highly-rated series like GTA and BioShock make the New York publisher stand out from competitors.

Take-Two currently expects earnings per share for fiscal 2009 to be between breakeven and 20 cents on a non-GAAP basis. But Creutz called the guidance conservative "given the strength of Take-Two's lineup," namely Chinatown Wars, BioShock 2, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands and Mafia II.
