Rockstar thinks DSi launch will benefit Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars sales

grand-theft-auto-china-town-wars-ds-logo.jpg

“The launch of a new piece of hardware into the DS family will garner a new level of buzz and get some more hype going for the system. I think anyone releasing high profile titles on the DS will definitely benefit from that. We also think there is the potential to attract lots of new owners into the market, particularly from our fans who may have played our GTA titles on the PSP.”
- Rockstar’s general manager Neil Stephen

Nintendo UK - The DSi gives the DS ‘unlimited potential’, no worries about stock shortage at launch

“Retail is tough for everyone at the moment, but having a new product is a good opportunity for all of us. It’s the only piece of new games hardware coming out this year, so is perfect for helping drive sales. We expect some people will upgrade, but we also anticipate that we’ll win over people who were still undecided on DS – the extra features will help convince them. There’s an extra incentive. There are 21m households in the UK – each one could conceivably have a DS. Or even more than one DS. That doesn’t mean that we’ll sell multiple units into every family and sell over 60m in the UK alone – we don’t think that will happen - but the numbers are still very buoyant. This is uncharted territory for the games industry as far as we are concerned. The functions of the device really open the platform up to more consumers – it gives the DS unlimited potential.” - UK GM David Yarnton

‘Unlimited’ might be a bit too strong of a word here, but the DSi certainly does expand upon what the DS can do. Mr. Yarnton also took the time to let consumers know that they should have no trouble finding a DSi at European launch.

“We’re comfortable with the amount of stock we’ll have available – but because we are not going to stop stocking DS Lite, we’ll have that in the market too. Production is at a comfortable level and stock availability will be consistent and steady, which is important for a product like this.”

DSi hits Europe on April 3rd, comes in black and white, priced at £149.99

Nintendo will launch its new handheld console, the Nintendo DSi, in Europe on 3 April 2009. The Nintendo DSi will be available in black or white and is the thinnest and lightest member of the Nintendo DS family. The console is packed with new features that will excite fans of and newcomers to the Nintendo DS range.

There are many ways to have fun with the Nintendo DSi, from creating, customising and sharing photos with friends & family or listening to and experimenting with your favourite music, to playing more than 1000 Nintendo DS games and downloading new Nintendo DSiWare games directly onto your console. The Nintendo DSi also features built-in Internet browsing capabilities, meaning the fun begins the moment you switch it on!

Nintendo DSi brings motion-detecting cameras to handheld gaming
The Nintendo DSi incorporates two cameras, adding an entirely new dimension to gameplay. The cameras are able to accurately detect facial features and players’ movements. Moving the upper body, hands, arms and head in front of the camera now means play can be directed by movement alone, bringing a whole new way of interacting with the handheld.

Play with your pictures
The Nintendo DSi’s cameras face inside and outside; mounted on the console’s flip-up lid so users can snap themselves or their friends and families just as they choose. What sets the Nintendo DSi’s cameras apart, however, is that the Nintendo DSi Camera software comes fully loaded with 11 special camera effects so that users can take shots using a range of special effects.

Users can edit their images in real-time or after they’re taken. Choices include a distortion tool which allows users to use the Stylus to distort their image in a variety of quirky and fun ways. Turn any face into fans’ favourite Mario with his famous moustache and hat, or frame the image beautifully in a style of your choosing. Everything you create can be saved into a personal photo album which in turn allows you to use your Nintendo DSi as a personal digital photo frame! Users can share their snapshots with friends and family wirelessly. Or by saving the content onto an SD memory card, users can upload to their personal computer or their Wii and share with friends and family using WiiConnect24!

Play with sound
The Nintendo DSi has enhanced volume and sound quality so that users can experience the Nintendo DSi Sound application, as well as in-game music, at its best. As well as bringing portable music to the Nintendo DSi (as players will be able to play AAC-encoded music files on their console), Nintendo DSi Sound introduces new ways for Nintendo DSi users to experiment and play with sound and music – changing the pitch, speed and even apply effects to sound files that are played on the console.

For example, users can slow down a phrase in a foreign language to get the pronunciation just right. But they can equally have fun recording their own voices and manipulating the play-back – adding sound effects to create new fun with sound. Players can also change the speed or add sound effects to songs, enabling them to create their own unique mixes, as well as learn words and instrumental solos more easily.

Download Nintendo DSiWare and customise your Nintendo DSi with a whole host of new titles and applications…
You can customise your Nintendo DSi by downloading games and applications from the Nintendo DSi Shop, in addition to being able to carry around your Nintendo DSi with your very own unique photos & music files. A variety of fun software will be available for download in the forthcoming months. Examples include an application which enables users to make animated cartoons or combine photos to create mini-movies (incorporating both sound and moving images); or the fun-filled WarioWare software which utilises the motion-detecting camera for a completely interactive experience. Users will also be able to download the Nintendo DSi Browser for free from launch, offering quick and easy Internet access from their Nintendo DSi.

All of this and more can be downloaded directly from the Nintendo DSi Shop via the Internet, and thanks to the Nintendo DSi’s built-in flash memory these can be saved directly onto your console, meaning you can take all of your games and other applications with you wherever you go.

Packed with features, but thinner than ever
In addition to all of the new features, the Nintendo DSi comes in a matt finish and is a full 12% thinner than the Nintendo DS Lite, making it Nintendo’s most portable handheld ever. However, it also packs a punch with bigger, brighter, 3.25” screens. As well as offering downloadable software via the Nintendo DSi shop, the new handheld is able to play games made specifically for the system and most Nintendo DS games - offering access to a library of hundreds of existing titles.

Nintendo DSi launches across Europe on 3 April in black and white.

The 99DS art exhibit - using ‘Colors’ to create art

thumb_090220_99ds.jpg

For those that don’t know, ‘Colors’ is a homebrew DS program that is much like Mario Paint, but for the serious artist. Artists Christian Pearce and Greg Broadmore created an art exhibit called 99DS, which features two art sets filled completely with their ‘Colors’ creations. One art set features cars (Deadly Sleds), and the other features naked women slipping on banana peels (Dodgy Slips). I’ll show you some of the car work…you’ll have to click elsewhere to find the women.

BLACK BEAN GAMES BRINGS YOU ICO SOCCER

blackbean.jpg

Black Bean Games and Artematica Entertainment strengthen their partnership with the release of a new concept game for soccer, due by the end of June. Ico Soccer has been thought for Nitendo DS and represents a game based mainly on logic and strategic analysis rather then reflexes and strong license.

Ico Soccer is a touch-based soccer experience that brings the player to be the team manager, interacting on team formation, substitution and tactics. Through Nintendo DS Stylus and visual icons, representing the different actions of the match, the player can move the entire team according to his strategy. With the balance bar, placed at the bottom of the fully-fledged screen, the player is perfectly aware of the attitude of the team through the entire match.

Every soccer player is a combination of 12 parameters that the coach needs to become familiar with in order to influence the result of the game in the correct way. Depending on the role of the soccer player, these parameters change the behavior of the player on the field.

Ico Soccer offers two different game modes: the Easy one, apt for beginner players who manage the balance board influencing the strength of the team, or the Pro mode where the player has the complete control over strategy, formation and game action. The player can choose whether to have a Quick Match in few minutes, to run for an entire World Championship or just do some Practice on game analysis. In any case, statistics will keep updated the overview of the coach performances.

Accordingly to Artematica Entertainment graphic style, comic panels appear on the top screen to show what is happening on the filed: referee showing yellow card, crowd crying for foul or for a goal.

EXCLUSIVE LEVEL FOR DS VERSION OF LEGACY OF YS: BOOKS I & II

Atlus has revealed that a new exclusive level will be included in the Nintendo DS version of Legacy of Ys: Books I & II. Marking the site of a massive disaster that occurred 700 years ago is the Vageux-Vardette, a huge crater in the center of Esteria. Though the nature of the disaster has since faded from memory, the area within its rim is considered sacred and to tread upon its ground is forbidden. Since the appearance of the Veil of Storms months before, horrible howls and screams have haunted the land. In past version of Ys, the Vageux-Vardette was only mentioned in passing, but now in the first book of Legacy of Ys, players will be able to explore this never-before-seen area, essentially a whole new level, confronting its new boss and finding an entirely new set of equipment.

"The Vageux-Vardette is one of the more eye-catching aspects of Ys I geography, and now Nintendo DS players can explore the natural expansion of the Ys universe in an exclusive new level," said Sam Mullen Project Lead of Legacy of Ys: Books I & II.

"With two games on one cartridge, a new multiplayer mode, a brand new localization, and the fact that each and every launch copy includes a soundtrack CD as a part of Atlus Spoils, there are already plenty of reasons to recommend Legacy of Ys to fans and newcomers alike." said Crystal Murray, PR Specialist at Atlus U.S.A. "Even for the most seasoned, long-time Ys fan, having a whole new area to explore and items to acquire enhances the overall experience."

One of the most heralded action RPG franchises of all time, Legacy of Ys: Books I & II delivers the first two epic adventures of the famed saga on one cartridge, presented with a series of never-before-seen enhancements. As a continuation of the Atlus Spoils fan appreciation campaign, the finished North American launch will be available in a special boxed release, with a soundtrack CD featuring the game's famed score, the company's way of saying thank you for their continued support.

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II is currently scheduled for a US release next week on February 24, 2009.

RUMOR - Dragon Quest IX’s serious bug involving online play?

Square-Enix recently took a massive beating over their financial outlook. At first they told everyone that their fiscal report was delayed due to an accounting issue, but no one really believed that. A week later, they fessed up and said that Dragon Quest IX was going to be delayed…news that sent shockwaves through analyst projections. It turns out that DQIX had a major bug in it, and it was one so severe that Square-Enix needed more time to fix it. But…what kind of bug was it?

Nikkei has put out a report saying that it was the online mode of Dragon Quest IX that was giving developers problems. It’s unclear if they are saying that a ’serious bug’ never existed, or that the ’serious bug’ was related to the online multiplayer. Either way, it sounds like this unique online experience is the reason Dragon Quest IX got bumped back to July.
