GameSpy's senior console editor takes a look at the "big three" press conferences and grades each company. Read on to see if your favorite company made the grade.

Microsoft Goes on the Attack
Microsoft kicked things off on Monday night, getting a jump on the competition. Out of the three, Microsoft clearly produced the best event. The presentation and pace were much, much better than the others. There was also less number throwing than the other guys; this might not please analysts and retailers, but the publishers, developers, and press in attendance appreciated the lack of spin-doctored numbers.
There were two highlights of the show. First was a sketch in the style of The Apprentice, complete with Donald Trump. I thought it was a bit juvenile and rude to portray Kaz Hirai, Andrew House, and Ken Kutaragi in such a mocking fashion, but damn it was fun to watch. Not surprisingly, Microsoft announced the EA Sports games will finally be on Xbox Live. To celebrate the new partnership, EA brought several of its flagship athletes on stage, including Muhammad Ali -- The Greatest. Along with Shigeru Miyamoto's appearance at the Nintendo presser, this was the most show-stopping moment in all of the press conferences.
Now, there were some things missing from the MS presser. With its two competitors releasing new hardware, it would have been easy for the company to start talking about Xbox Next. Wisely, it did not and chose to focus on XNA. While it's smart not to talk about new hardware too soon so as not to cannibalize future sales of the current hardware, development tools are just not that exciting for most consumers. Also, there weren't any earth-shattering software announcements. Forza Motorsport looks cool and might have some features that Gran Turismo doesn't, but I sincerely doubt it's a million seller. And while it got a nice pop from the crowd and it's probably going to be pretty awesome, announcing that Halo 2 is definitely coming out this year isn't such a big deal. It's about damn time. Lastly, I'm still wondering why Shark Tales and Spyro were even shown. These games did nothing to enhance Microsoft's market position.
All that said, I think MS did a great job with its presser. It showed that Xbox Live is the place to be in terms of console gaming online. It showed strong clips of many first- and third-party games that look like they'll be high quality. It showed a clear direction on how it intends to continue to push the Xbox, while also looking towards the future withXNA. And it delivered a clear message with slick presentation.

Sony Styles?Somewhat
Most of Sony's press conference featured Kaz Hirai speaking at the crowd in an extremely dull manner. It was odd since he's usually a very dynamic speaker, but on Tuesday morning he was dreary and was looking down at the teleprompter most of the time. He also chucked out more numbers than any of his competitors -- for you're your purposes and mine, it's Dullsville. Thankfully he had some great content and announcements to make.
Sony is finally cutting the price of the PlayStation 2. It was really impressive that it was able to maintain its high prices for so long. With Nintendo and Microsoft having to cut prices early and often to try and compete with Sony's installed base, it was interesting to watch Sony stick to its guns and continue to dominate. There should be a nice spike in PlayStation 2 sales with this price cut.
The company unveiled more details on its PSP handheld gaming system. Damn that thing is sexy. With its gaming, music, movie, and wireless capabilities, this is a technosexual's dream machine. It's part PlayStation, part iPod, part Game Boy, and all cool. From what analysts are saying, it's not going to cheap, but I'm sure Sony will do an excellent job making it a must-have piece of consumer electronics.
Last but not least, Sony talked a bit about its Cell architecture, which will be found in the PlayStation 3. At this point of the presentation, the crowd was thoroughly bored and not in the mood for geek speak, but as a former tech writer, I rather enjoyed this segment. Cell is going to be pretty slick and I can't wait to see it in action at next year's Sony presser.
Of course, Sony still has the most diverse software lineup of the big three. It showed off a really entertaining multiplayer online demo of Ratchet & Clank 3. Even though it's clearly derivative of Onslaught, it just looked like a ton of fun. Plus it features furry animals and snowmen -- that's always cool. Aside from that, the software side is business as usual for Sony. It'll have huge exclusives like GTA: San Andreas and very solid stuff all around.
Sony did a great job showing off the PSP and reiterating its dominance in software. It also claimed to be taking steps to unify the PlayStation 2 online experience. Outside of the new hardware announcement, nothing else was nearly as exciting, which isn't a bad thing since it has a ton of solid products all around. If Hirai was his usual dapper self, I would have nudged the grade up a bit. He did a mediocre job, but his company had a lot to back him up with.

Nintendo's Fan Boy Pep Rally
I'm really starting to dislike the Nintendo press conference. Whether it's some idiot asking Miyamoto a question in horrible Japanese or the incessant cheering of the fan-boy-filled crowd, the presser is more like a pep rally. Fortunately, the company showed of some new hardware, some great games, and a huge surprise (for most of the crowd anyway).
While not as polished or animated as the Microsoft press conference, Nintendo put together an entertaining program, which was most welcomed after having Hirai suck the air out of the soundstage a few minutes earlier and a few miles away. One oddity was having that the teleprompters were huge and visible to everyone sitting in the front of the theater. This had many people turning around and reading along with whomever was speaking.
Nintendo's focus was clearly on the DS. It admitted that its system wasn't as powerful as the PSP, but it offers a totally unique playing experience. This is somewhat true. With creative games, the DS will be a killer system. Without them, it'll be a cool and novel handheld that'll play second fiddle to the PSP. It's funny, developers and gamers seem to prefer the DS (in general), while publishers, marketers, and their ilk are drawn to the potentially huge PSP market. Nintendo did a good job at pushing and positioning the DS, so perhaps those money types better pay closer attention.
In terms of games, Nintendo's library is what is has been for two generations: mostly excellent first-party games and a smattering of third-party titles. The Capcom stuff went over well, but all the attention was on the homegrown goods. The show was closed in a most exciting fashion when Nintendo unveiled a clip of its Zelda game featuring an adult Link. Though several journalists knew this was coming, most of the crowd did not?and they went absolutely nuts. Their fervor went up a notch when Miyamoto appeared on stage donning a shield and swinging a (master?) sword, just like Link.
Nintendo definitely had a stronger show than it did with last year's disastrous presser and the DS seemed to go over well, but it still hasn't shown how it's going to change its position in the market. Some of the problems it had with the Nintendo 64 and GCN will plague its next system unless a significant shift in strategy is made. Still, for the immediate future, Nintendo platforms will be rocking.
