Wirklich interessant:
"In that context because both are OFF CHIP memory it wouldn't be a good design, because then you basically have the identical setup to a PC.
This is actually what they did with the PS3 memory, it has 256MB of one type of ram and another 256MB of a different type of ram (DEVS HATED IT, in that setup), but DEVS loved the Xbox one DDR 512MB RAM + the 10mb of ON CHIP eDRAM with embedded ALU processors.
Having the memory in one large bank (off chip) is good because then different parts of the system have access to it HOWEVER, GDDR5 is a very BAD choice because of its penalties to the CPU and the memory CONTENTION that comes from 'sharing'.
If GDDR5 was good for CPU's then it would be put on Computers for the CPU, but instead they use DDR3/4.
the BEST setup is what MS has done which is a LARGE chunk of 'ON CHIP' memory which then gets used by the GPU, and then the CPU isn't going to have Contention issues when using the DDR3 memory.
This frees the CPU up to be doing its OWN thing without being interrupted at the same time as the GPU doing its own thing without being interrupted at the SAME time both being able to "SEE" the shared memories.
People talk about the Bandwidth differences of DDR3 and GDDR5 and yes there is differences, but when you design something like the xbox one which was made for Dx12 and Tiled Resources all of a sudden you DONT need large bandwidth. If you read what the Forza Horizon 2 Devs were saying about the Forward+ Rendering they said there becomes no Bandwidth Bottlenecks for the GPU using eSRAM, because the NEW way of rendering using Compute shaders and other stuff don't need this massive bandwidth.
All this massive bandwidth is all OLD ways of doing things.
When you mix things like the xbox ones GPU being able to deal with Compressed data (like AMD have announced in their NEW GPU's) which is the same as having a HIGHER bandwidth on an OLD GPU, and then you put into the mix tiled resources shit is going to get real really soon.
Just remember it was AMD that said the next Xbox is going to be able to render games in AVATAR like graphics and that is NOT going to be achieved using old gen hardware.
*In regards to Cerney, he actually showed and said that onchip memory is better, but said harder to develop for (but the reality is they had NO money to invest in it)
they thought it was a good idea to have one large slab of GDDR5 because all of the DEVS said SONY is DOOMED if they only go with 4GB of memory. Sony only wanted 4GB to start with. MS was ALWAYS thinking 8GB (plus the 8GB Flash Nand Ram in there

, plus the 32MB eSRAM, PLUS the other 15MB on chip memory they haven't spoken about)
The thing is the old way of thinking was never going to get games looking Majorly different. It required a NEW way of thinking. they were also NEVER going to be able to pack as much BRUTE force into a Console like you can on a PC.
Problem is everyone is still thinking like old gen. but things like Forza Horizon 2 is changing that. in its 1080P glory, BUT with 4x MSAA, PLUS physically based Lighting, Full Physics etc. (no corners cut, and that is not even including what is coming)
If you take COD Ghosts and having it rendered in 4K, does it look better than say RYSE in 900P?? (no bloody way), that is why MS said it is Quality of Pixels that matters.
We are going to get so spoilt by MS and what they are bringing to the table it isn't going to be funny (this is why the talk of a new PS5).
Game ON."
Sehr interessante Aussage.
