10. SHADOWRUN

Seen as the pioneer for the then-new Windows/Xbox LIVE cross-compatibility, Shadowrun was always bound to fold under the pressure of its hype. With only a few maps on offer, an unimaginative set of weapons, and an instantly detestable cast of characters, this one never made a mark on the gaming public, and unimpressed critics even more so.

9. PREY

With a development period spanning over ten years, Prey promised to be the first must-have next gen FPS. Unfortunately its lengthy time in development showed and Prey was widely received as a poorly designed, boredom inducing mess, quickly swallowed up by the hype that had surrounded it.

8. PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 6

PES’s first outing of the generation gutted loyal fans when it launched in 2006 with its substandard graphics, ageing gameplay and next to useless online component. And it hasn’t gotten much better since…

7. HEAVENLY SWORD

The fact that Heavenly Sword was penned by an award-nominated writer and provided some of the best CGI sequences we’ve ever seen in a video game didn’t make up for it being a half-baked hack & slash, and therefore insanely dull.

6. HALO 3

halo3.jpg

Given the gushing five star review back in Issue 2, Halo 3 may have been one of those that even we were suckered into. But in hindsight it’s easy to see that the single player campaign was nowhere near as epic or as compelling as we were perhaps led to believe, while the gameplay echoed its predecessor in all but the pixel count.

5. HAZE

haze.jpg

A new FPS from the guys that did TimeSplitters!” It’s a phrase that rang around the gaming community with an unprecedented air of excitement. Sometimes a team of developers can become bigger than their games, and this is surely the case with Haze. As ever, the pre-release hype screamed out an unrelentingly positive vibe, but come release day Haze’s dull story and even duller gameplay squeezed the game dry of any potential it may have once held, securing its quick exit to the bargain bin.

4. ASSASSIN’S CREED

assassin.jpg

Billed as a natural evolution of the stealth genre, Assassin’s Creed immediately reeked of an unwelcome stench. Many players hastily came to the conclusion that, once you’ve played the first level, you’ve played the entire game. A case of style over substance for Ubisoft Montreal if ever there was one.

3. TWO WORLDS

twoworlds.jpg

In the pre-release build up, Two Worlds was dubbed as the new Oblivion. Although only a claim, a comparison of that magnitude doesn’t come around too often, but with it a sense of responsibility from the developers. In reality, all that Two Worlds could do was fail; and fail miserably at that. For such an unfinished product to make it onto the shelves is unforgivable, and something that highlights the power of the hype machine perfectly.

2. LAIR

Where did it all go wrong for Factor 5? Lair was supposed to be the kick start that the innovative motion-controlled gaming world desperately needed. But in reality, all Lair managed to do was highlight how useless that “innovation” currently is.

1. KANE & LYNCH: DEAD MEN

What more could you want than a heist game inspired by such classics as Heat and Collateral, and developed by Hitman developers IO Interactive? Well, something remotely representative of a finished product for a start. Calling it an inauspicious introduction to a potential franchise back in Issue 4, Kane & Lynch was a fascinating concept but fundamentally flawed - and massively over-hyped.
