Sonys Spielesparte kürzt Prognose um 265 Mio. Euro

Will Sony Be Acquired And Is Stringer The Right Leader?

COMMENT: Serious questions are today being asked about the performance of Sir Howard Stringer the Welsh-born former TV journalist who as the CEO and Chairman of Sony has just announced that the Japanese consumer electronics Company will make losses this year of over A$3.8 Billion dollars.
Serious questions are today being asked about the performance of Sir Howard Stringer the Welsh-born former TV journalist who as the CEO and Chairman of Sony has just announced that the Japanese consumer electronics Company will make losses this year of over A$3.8 Billion dollars.

The problem for Stringer is that he is a Westerner in very Japanese Company and although a great many of the shareholders are from the USA and Europe there is still a strong current of support in the Company particularly from the engineering and technology sides for a Japanese CEO.

The loss only strengthens their case say Analysts who believe that Stringer may walk away from the top job at Sony.
On the other hand Sony has not really come up with anything new over the past few years instead Companies like Apple, and even ASUS with their Netbook have taken share away from Sony.

Now Samsung is starting to tear into their LCD TV market share. In Australia the overpriced PS3 Playstation is in third spot behind the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360.

When Stringer was appointed chairman and CEO of Sony in 2005, he set out to destroy the factions dividing the electronics giant and uncover the synergies needed to grow. However this appears not to be working.

On the other hand when Stringer did take over Sony was an absolute basket case. The Japanese management at the time had misread the boom in flat panel TV's by still trying to push large screen CRT TV's. And when they did move to flat panel TV's they chose Plasma and it was not till 2006 that Sony consolidated behind LCD with the creation of the Bravia brand.
Sony badly needs a stunning new product that screams Sony innovation. They use to have it with the Walkman but that was demolished by Apple who yesterday recorded massive profits from their notebooks, iPods and the 3g iPhone all products that Sony competes against but in a poor way.

Stringer is a very talented man, a dual U.S. and British citizen, was handpicked by his predecessor, Nobuyuki Idei, who was charmed by the Oxford-educated former screenwriter's wit and vision of technology's potential.

At his best when poking fun at himself, Stringer's verbal sparring with Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month drew applause and laughs from the audience.

However he has failed to deliver a hero product such as a new gaming console that is as much a media centre or home gateway.
In the notebook market they are playing catch up to several Taiwanese Companies such as ASUS with their netbook and a new generation of touch screens.
Where Sony has an edge is with content. While at CBS his former employer Stringer helped boost Dan Rather to the top of U.S. news ratings and lured comedian David Letterman from a rival television network.

He understands the content business but despite this we still don't have a global Sony Content Network that consumers can go to for movie, gaming and other content. It is still coming Sony executives say.

Stringer has also failed to win the hearts of Sony's engineers who appear more intent on playing politics than delivering a hero product. These are the same guys who gave us Sony Robots and me too entertainment products. They are also the same guys who designed the PS that is so expensive to manufacture that it is still costing Sony Billions every year.

All they have to do is look at what Nintendo have done with the Wii. This is a highly profitable product that is selling millions around the world.

"Stringer has not presented a business plan that would convince the engineers to stand behind him," said Yoshihisa Toyosaki, president of IT consultancy J-Star Global and a former Sony employee. "I don't think it will happen now."
"Sony's product line isn't diversified enough," said Fujio Ando, senior managing director at Chibagin Asset Management, who compares the firm unfavourably with rival Sharp with its solar cells and Panasonic with its lithium batteries.
"That's what's frightening about high-tech companies. You need the technology and you need the patents, but most important you need your engineers motivated, if you want future growth," Toyosaki said."Once Sony falls behind with their technology, that's the end of its brand."

Right now there is nothing on the radar for Sony that is going to lead them out of the technology wilderness. What they delivered at the recent CES was nice but not must have.

Their OLED TV offering is expensive as are most of the Sony products. Their notebooks are well built and look good however most of the features are in other notebooks that are cheaper. Gaming is a big problem for the Company due to massive losses from the manufacture of their PS3 gaming console.
Their Camera's are popular but this is a hard category to make money due to competition from the likes of Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and a whole bunch of other players.
So will Stringer survive that is open to debate. The big question is will Sony survive or will someone with a lot of cash on their books come along and buy them.

Rumor: First Wave of MS Job Cuts to Affect Xbox Division

Yesterday, we told you that Microsoft will cut 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months, with 1,400 of those being cut as early as this month. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, who has covered the tech industry for 20 years and keeps close tabs on Microsoft strategy, products and technologies for the past 10 years, is reporting that the Xbox division will be the one suffering the major bulk of the first wave of job cuts. Jo Foley said:

I’m hearing from my sources that the Entertainment and Devices (E&D) unit — the group that is responsible for Xbox, Zune and Windows Mobile — is being hit with the bulk of the immediate 1,400-person cuts. (I have no specifics about how this will affect Microsoft’s product roadmap, but stay tuned.)

This comes as a surprise, considering that the Entertainment and Devices (E&D) revenue grew 3% driven by strong holiday demand for Xbox 360 consoles with a record 6 million units sold in the quarter.

Sony reduziert Hardware-Absatzprognose

23.01.09 - Sony hat seine Prognose über die verkaufte Hardware in diesem Geschäftsjahr (01.04.08 - 31.03.09) teilweise nach unten korrigiert, die im Oktober 2008 aufgestellt wurde:

PS3: 10 Mio. Einheiten (alt: 10 Mio. Einheiten)
PSP: 15 Mio. Einheiten (alt: 16 Mio. Einheiten)
PS2: 8 Mio. Einheiten (alt: 9 Mio. Einheiten)

Die Software-Zahlen bleiben unverändert: Insgesamt will das Unternehmen 250 Mio. Spiele im laufenden Geschäftsjahr absetzen.
q: gamefront.de

wie wollen die denn 250mio games verkaufen??? ......... oder meinen die inklusive 3rd parties???

There had been a bunch of discussion here regarding the results of the E&D division in Microsoft latest quarterly reports. Members knew that E&D includes not only the 360 and games but also the Zune, the Mac software and Windows Mobile. But how much of the revenue, costs and profits can be attributed to gaming?

Entertainment and Devices Division (“EDD”) offerings include the Xbox 360 platform (which includes the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console system, Xbox 360 video games, Xbox Live, and Xbox 360 accessories), the Zune digital music and entertainment platform, PC software games, online games and services, Mediaroom (our Internet protocol television software), the Surface computing platform, mobile and embedded device platforms, and other devices. EDD leads the development efforts for our line of consumer software and hardware products including application software for Apple’s Macintosh computers and Microsoft PC hardware products, and is responsible for all retail sales and marketing for Microsoft Office and the Windows operating systems.

Three months ended December 31, 2008 compared with three months ended December 31, 2007

EDD revenue increased primarily due to increased Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue and other EDD product revenue, partially offset by decreased Zune platform revenue. Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue increased $135 million or 6%, primarily as a result of an increase in Xbox 360 console and video game sales, partially offset by decreased revenue per Xbox 360 console due to price reductions during the past 12 months. We shipped 6.0 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, compared with 4.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2008. Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million or 54% reflecting a decrease in device sales.

EDD operating income decreased primarily due to increased cost of revenue, research and development expenses, and sales and marketing expenses, partially offset by increased revenue. Cost of revenue increased $139 million or 7%, primarily driven by increased costs associated with the Xbox 360 platform reflecting the increase in console and video game sales. Research and development expenses increased $106 million or 29%, primarily reflecting increased headcount-related expenses associated with the Windows Mobile device platform. Sales and marketing expenses increased $83 million or 19%, primarily reflecting an increase in product advertising and channel marketing.

Six months ended December 31, 2008 compared with six months ended December 31, 2007

EDD revenue decreased primarily due to decreased Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue, partially offset by increases in other EDD product revenue. Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue decreased $196 million or 5%, primarily as a result of the $330 million of incremental revenue from the launch of Halo 3 in the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 and decreased revenue per Xbox 360 console as a result of price reductions during the past 12 months. We shipped 8.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first half of fiscal year 2009 compared with 6.1 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first half of fiscal year 2008. Other EDD product revenue increased $169 million or 15%, led by increased sales of application software for Apple’s Macintosh computers and mobile and embedded device platforms.

EDD operating income decreased primarily due to increased research and development expenses, partially offset by decreased cost of revenue. Research and development expenses increased $251 million or 37%, primarily reflecting increased headcount-related expenses associated with the Windows Mobile device platform, driven by recent acquisitions. Cost of revenue decreased $112 million or 4%, primarily driven by decreased Xbox 360 manufacturing and warranty costs.

Electronic goods costs 'may rise'

Consumers are being warned that the prices of electronics goods made in Japan are likely to rise, because of the strength of the yen.

Japanese electronics firms say the strength of their currency is putting their profits under pressure.

Sony has warned it will make a record loss this year.

And camera and printer maker Canon has already acted by increasing its prices across Europe by about 5%, and as much as 10% in the UK.

The BBC's technology correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, said shoppers have previously known a simple rule about electronics goods, which is to wait a while and they will get cheaper.

But now high street retailers, which are struggling for business, have to decide whether to pass on the price rises, our correspondent added.

Massive layoff at Xbox division - closes studio

Microsoft recently announced that the company would be laying-off 5,000 employees due to a drop in profits. This is the first mass layoff in the history of Microsoft. However, news has trickled out that the Xbox division will be suffering the brunt of the job cuts.

Word has been trickling out that the Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD) will receive the brunt of the mass layoff. The EDD division consists of the Zune, PC gaming and the massive Xbox division. The EDD is headed up by the well known faces: Shane Kim, Don Matttrick, Phil Spencer and the friendly Aaron Greenberg.

Word has come out that Microsoft owned site, Gamerscore Blog has ceased operation. Many of the former employees have revealed that all of the writers have been laid off.

Also, notorious VentureBeat writer Dean Takahashi, revealed that approximately 30 percent of Microsoft’s internal video game testers have been laid off. What in the world is Microsoft thinking by laying off quality assurance testers for the video game division?

The journalist also stated that the game division will receive a massive management restructuring next week. In the corporate world, management restructuring usually means firing and consolidating. Could this be the end of Aaron Greenberg? I sure hope not.

Microsoft also announced today that the company will be shutting down one of its longest running game studio, ACES. The studio has been responsible for various franchises such as long time veteran, Flight Simulator.

According to Microsoft the decision to shut down the studio was made in order “to align our[Microsoft's] people against our[Microsoft's] highest priorities.” Obviously the highest priority for Microsoft is Windows.

I have talked about Microsoft’s shift towards the casual market and these events seem to indicate that the change will not be gradual but possibly abrupt. There is also some indication from Microsoft that the company wants to focus more on its core business such as Windows. This is in contrast to Sony who is laying-off employees in its core businesses and leaving the gaming division alone (for now). Could we see a leaner Xbox division by next month?

Es geht auch nicht um die Stellung der Entertainment and Devices Division innerhalb von Microsoft, sondern um das Quality Management.
