HedgehogNetwork: The Pre-Show Yawns

“YAWN” Well good morning XBOXActive! If you’re wondering why this Network’s a little late it’s because I had to make certain I had all the facts straight about the amazing game announcements made this week! If you’re wondering why I’m so tired it’s because that pompous Blue Blur Sonic keeps waking me up at the crack of dawn to see his new show on Fox, SonicX. I swear its bad enough that I gotta deal with Sonic’s ego. But even Cream got a role in the new show, SHEESH! Well come next year we’ll see whose got the most bragging rights!

That Game I Spoke of, You Know?
A few weeks ago I said that there was a title lurking around in all this Trade Show madness that came from the makers of a multi-million selling franchise. A title so impressive, it would give Fable a run for its money! Some people came to believe I spoke of Magatama, from the men behind Final Fantasy XII; but in truth I was referring to Bioware’s remarkable Jade Empire, and I’ve got some killer details!

JE places gamers in the role of a Monk of the Shoalin ass kickin variety! You can be either a male or female and you will set out from your monastery to seek your destiny within the Jade Empire. The Empire, which boasts a truly breathtaking blend of Oriental, Aztec and Mayan architecture, is not a healthy place at this time and your actions will decide the future of whether the Empire endures or falls. Choose a righteous path and your temple will gain great renown and its numbers will grow, be a baddie and you can join an invading army and destroy the Empire.

The Hedgehog’s Take- Ironic, XBOX’s best shot of a killer RPG in Japan comes from Canada?

Grunts will be Thwackethed!
It’s been a grueling four months since we last saw anything new on Halo 2, but Bungie’s amazing super sequel will be making a mammoth size splash at X03 next week! From what some of my sources are telling me, show attendees may finally get their grateful hands on the Chief’s new title in PLAYABLE FORM! Whether the demo will be just a single player mission, a multiplayer arena, or what, is still a surprise!

The Hedgehog’s Take- I don’t care if all I get to do is test the new Plasma Grenade physics just GIVE ME HALO 2!

Rumor Followup- Phantom of the Industy
So you think that Microsoft’s unique new Phantom Dust just came out of nowhere do you? Alright it pretty much did; but the Hedgehog was actually telling you about it months ago; because Phantom Dust might be the final form of a very old Project.

Phantom Dust has been in development for over 16 months! That’s a long time for a console game to go unnoticed. However, old school Hedgehog fans will remember me catching a glimpse of a gothic looking title called Project: Smokescreen. I first saw Smokescreen with my own eyes about 11 months ago when I toured Microsoft Games studios at Redmond WA during their XBOX Live Boot Camp event. The only thing I ever saw of the title was some fleeting concept art posted on the wall, displaying some rather dark and gritty looking fellow’s in some run down old buildings! Still, after almost a year of nothing, it now seems that Phantom Dust is Project: Smokescreen given a proper name!

The Hedgehog’s Take- Makes you wonder whether or not Knights of Decayden will suddenly pop up as well!

From Forwards to Backwards?
A Level 5 Amigo of mine may have accidentally let slip something that he didn’t mean to let slip. While discussing the new stuff that they were going to reveal at TGS about Microsoft's super big True Fantasy Live Online! He may have actually confirmed that XBOX 2 will be Backwards Compatible. Or not, I haven’t really decided yet!

You see my friend said that in order to service and support TFLO, Microsoft was setting up servers and a customer support system with the intentions to fund and maintain it for a minimum of three years after the games release! Now here’s the catch, the game isn’t due for release here in the states till 2004, so were looking at a minimum support time termination of 2007! Barring some astronomical delays, that’s a long time after the XBOX 2’s projected launch date. Don’t lock your minds into thinking that XBOX 2 is BC just yet this is still just circumstantial evidence! Sega after all just recently shut down the servers and support network for the Dreamcast’s version of Phantasy Star Online, two years after the console bellied up!

The Hedgehog Take- Viva La obscure clues!

Don’t be so surprised that rumor report is a little lighter this week gang! With so many new announcements made the mill got drained quite a bit! Don’t think I’m not psyched as ever for the following weeks though! With TGS and X03 looking to show the world just what XBOX is made of, this could be an even more exciting time for XBOX than E3. Yes it should be good, but until then I’m gonna catch up on some Z’s. “YAAAWN” Lousy Sonic, next thing you know he’ll be waking me up for the Chili Dog delivery guy.

Microsoft has just announced at the time of X03 that Pro Evolution Soccer 3 will be born on Xbox! Microsoft and Konami indeed have just concluded an agreement so that play of football celebrates it is adapted on Xbox, with, and it is most interesting perhaps there, an accountancy Xbox Live and XNS Sports! It is from now on a certainty, Konami wants to bury FIFA. The exit of Pro Evolution Soccer 3 is awaited by the end of the year on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 2. Great.

October 10, 2003 - Welcome, welcome, welcome everyone! Boy, do we have some super-juicy Star Wars rumors for you today. Before reading the following the news, remember that none of the following information has been confirmed nor denied, but we can assure you that our sources have never been wrong before. They've come through on many, many occasions, and we'd say everything we're about to tell you is more than likely fact. So sit back and relax, and see how the Force is becoming one with the Xbox.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KOTOR 2
No one can deny the significance of having Knights of the Old Republic exclusively (on consoles anyways) available for the Xbox. Not only is it one of the only RPGs for the big black behemoth, but it's one of the best RPGs to come out in recent memory on any console. And then there's the sales numbers. The game has not only experienced incredible sales, to the tune of 600,000 units and counting, but it's also lead to increased Xbox sales, however minor. System-selling quality indeed.

A logical action to take after such success is to start planning the game's successor, and apparently, KOTOR 2 is under development. A few sources have already reported that the sequel has been greenlighted for a late 2004 or early 2005 release, and that the game's storyline - which is to take place many years after KOTOR's --will include a completely new cast of characters. But what few people are aware of is that the game is not being developed internally at BioWare, but in Orange County at Obsidian Entertainment. (At least that's what we hear.)

What? Who's this Obsidian Entertainment? Never heard of them? Well, search back through the files in your skull and you may remember an announcement made by BioWare back in August. The company announced a commitment to collaborate on future PC and console titles with Obsidian. Here's a quick refresher:

"BioWare is currently in the fortunate position of having more attractive looking opportunities on the table than we're capable of implementing while staying true to our fans' expectations of a quality gaming experience. We think several of these opportunities have the potential for critical and commercial success and are interested in exploring ways in which BioWare can expand its capacity to bring these projects to market," said Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Joint CEO, BioWare Corp.
"BioWare is interested in establishing relationships with credible development studios that have the desire and capability to implement projects consistent with our quality expectations. Obsidian represents a perfect example of this strategy. We're very pleased to have the chance to work with teams which have a demonstrated track record of developing world class titles," commented Dr. Ray Muzyka, Joint CEO, BioWare Corp.

"A collaboration with BioWare gives Obsidian the opportunity to explore development projects on established game franchises with proven technology and brand loyalty from the fan community. This is an excellent opportunity for a new studio looking to make an immediate impact in the market," said Feargus Urquhart, CEO, Obsidian Entertainment, Inc.

For BioWare - a company with a very respectable track record - to hand over the next KOTOR game to another company, it would have to trust them unquestionably. Fortunately for Obsidian, BioWare does. Founded by five industry veterans who've worked on a number of well-known games including Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Fallout, MDK 2 and Planescape: Torment, BioWare has every reason to trust them, especially considering the number of BioWare titles in the development studio's resume.

Also indicative of the studio's work on KOTOR 2 is the quote from Urquhart where he mentions that Obisidian will be working on "…established game franchises with proven technology and brand loyalty from the fan community," and the company's website where it mentions that "Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on an unannounced role-playing game for PC and console systems." Though both BioWare and Obsidian Entertainment have only responded with "no comments," and have not confirmed nor denied this rumor, all clues point to Obsidian being the developer.

Rebel X
In other Star Wars-related news, we've heard that the Rogue Squadron trilogy of games (Rogue Squadron (N64), Rogue Leader (GCN), Rebel Strike (GCN)) is making its way to the 'Box in late 2004 to coincide with the DVD release of the first three movies (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Referred to internally as "Rebel X," rumor has it that the three titles will be bundled together for one supreme Star Wars package. No word yet on any additions/enhancements to the titles, but anything's a possibility.

With the Rogue games being some of the GameCube's strongest titles, the end of exclusivity may spell trouble for Nintendo. We'd like to assume that the success of Star Wars games on the Xbox, especially KOTOR, has made Factor 5 rethink its current position and move on to better sales and a more profitable future. Does this spell the end of Star Wars game development on the GameCube? Not necessarily, but with support for Nintendo's console steadily declining we'd be surprised to hear of any new LucasArts games coming out for the system. Of course, this has little relevance to the next generation of consoles, but for the GameCube, Rebel Strike may be it.

We'll have much more on KOTOR 2 and Rebel X in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled and you ears open.
