Insomniac Studios, the bright minds behind Resistance: Fall of Man, the Ratchet & Clank series and the upcoming PS3 title Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (which graces the cover of EGM's April issue), will launch their bi-weekly podcast "Full Moon," on March 1.
Ryan Schneider, Insomniac's marketing director, James Stevenson, Insomniac's online community manager and Insomniac design director Brian Allgeier will share hosting duties on the program.
The obvious danger in launching a developer-run podcast is that the show has the potential to sound like a laundry-list of announcements. That's not the goal of Insomniac's show. "We want to be able to offer people more access to Insomniac in everything that we're doing. The whole reason we're doing this is for a long time now we've had fans correspond with us via email, they want to know what's going on a day-to-day basis. We want to be able to give them a consistent snapshot of what we're doing and why we're doing it," says Schneider.
Episodes of 'Full Moon' will have a series of segments, in addition to frequent updates on the Resistance and Ratchet universes:
Mystery Guest: Insomniac will interview well-known personalities about videogames development from within the videogames world but who do not work at Insomniac Games. The only clue about the podcast's first "Mystery Guest" is that this person received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Game Developers Association.
I Want Your Job: This segment will focus on interviewing an Insomniac employee about their job, including an overview of what they do, how they got the job and tips for getting similar jobs within the games industry.
Online Update: This segment will serve as a virtual 'ESPN SportsCenter' for profiles on top players, top clans, patch and expansion updates and more.
Mailbag: Insomniac will share some of its amusing fan mail, including some of the more outrageous (and pathetic) excuses for being banned from our forums communities.
For the most part, developers don't poo-poo other developers. Insomniac, while technically platform agnostic, is essentially a second party studio for Sony, does that mean they'll only be talking about Sony products? Absolutely not. "We are going to be talking about what we're playing, but that's going to be the extent of it," says Schneider. "Brian, James and I are playing various Wii, 360 products or MMOs. We're not really going to get into badmouthing anything we don't like. That's just not us as an organization."
Allgeier adds, "We really want to be fair. You can't throw stones if you live in a glass house. We understand the pressure that other developers face, we want to be fair, but at the same time we want to be honest."
One of the terms for creating 'Full Moon' was that the show didn't take any outside work away from the development teams. As a result, Schneider, Stevenson and Allgeier have to shore the load. "When we jumped into making a podcast, we didn't realize all of the work that went into making it," Schneider says. James Stevenson has spent the last three days learning the in-and-outs of ProTools' audio production software.
Another thing Insomniac has discovered along the way is that it's a bit difficult to keep the show short. "When we initially started doing this, we wanted to be the guys who keep it short and sweet," says Schneider. "Then we recorded. Our first podcast is going to come in at about 70 minutes. We're going to do our best to keep it tight, but there's a lot of stuff to talk about. In theory, 30 minutes sounds quite do-able, but there's just so much to talk about."
More information on 'Full Moon' will appear at Insomniac's homepage and users will be able to email suggestions to the 'Full Moon' team at podcast@insomniacgames.com.
They make a note of mentioning that all the screens are in-game. You'll be surprised because i can't see a single bit of aliasing anywhere.- Bringing different emotional expressions into enemies. "Our goal is to get a performance out of the enemies and to have special moments where they will work with environments."
- The new Tomato Launcher weapon uses the Sixaxis controls to guide the projectile (other weapons will use motion controls too).
