Pokemon Channel makes watching TV boring. I can hardly find enough compelling gameplay to call this a game. It's far too passive an experience to keep my interest for more than a few minutes -- especially since I'm forced to watch an episode of the PichuBros. and sit through other boring commentary to access other parts of the game. It's not a very fun experience, at least for people over 12. It's truly mindless. Even the more meaty segments of the game, like the quiz show, is way too easy -- I was able to answer nine of ten questions correctly with a very rudimentary knowledge of Pokemon.
However, I do realize that this is a kids' title. From that perspective I think Pokemon Channel gets the job done, especially if the child is an avid fan or too young to grasp more complex games. There are some interesting aspects, like the paint program, but even the taking care of Pikachu bit is pretty simple. If parents are looking for a kid friendly title, this is it. However, teenager and adults (whether or not a Pokemon fan) will find far too mind numbing to tolerate. Please rent it first, if you're still curious
Overall, Pokémon Channel has some interesting ideas, such as going around and interacting with wild pokémon in a 3D world and having the GameCube clock affect gameplay, for example. Fundamentally, they're hampered by the gimmick of having to "virtually" watch television programs. There's some nice content in here for fans of the franchise, as there are quite a few pokémon to be found in the game. Furthermore, there are a ton of items to collect, and there's even some replay value, but it's a chore to get to because of the limited gameplay. Although clearly aimed at children, the game fails to offer a very compelling experience for younger gamers due to the long stretches of time you spend being forced to watch the programs in order to progress further. Ultimately, Pokémon Channel fails to capture the addictive and inventive appeal of its handheld predecessors due to weak gameplay, bland visuals, and sparse sound.
For what it is, the graphics are decent. Ironically, the Pokémon look better than they do in the upcoming Pokémon Colosseum, and Pikachu is very smoothly modeled and animated. The environments aren't bad, either, but are hardly interesting and limited to single panning screens: a room, a field, a snowy field, the beach ... you get the idea. Pokémon Channel's sound is sure to momentarily appeal to fans of the show's Pokémon "talking" gimmick (in which Pokémon repeat their names), but quickly gets old as there are very few samples and nearly no inflection, resulting in some very boring listening for the entirety of your passive viewing experience.
All seems well in the Pokémon land. How anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me: Did the 1-2 combo of the Pokémon Pikachu pedometer and Konami's Boktai lure too many kids into outdoor exercise, and now Nintendo felt it had to reeducate its audience on the merits of television? Pokémon Channel is as insipid as it is pointless, and even at the reduced price of $30 is a waste of time and money for even the most diehard Pokémon fans.
