Es ist ne aufgemotzte Engine mit ner komplett neuen Kampagne...das wär doch ein 5GB-Download.
Und da es nur die Kampagne ist, hat man viel mehr Platz auf der DVD...ergo: mehr Content ^^
So by now you’ve all seen the Bungie countdown teaser that has been travelling like wildfire all over the net. Speculation as to what exactly the video refers to has been moving even faster than the aptly defined ‘teaser’ trailer (there’s a hell of a lot of teasing going on there). But to get those of you who haven’t seen the video yet up to speed check it out below before we throw in our 2 cents.
Ok, so now that we’re all on the same ‘what the hell did I just see’ page, let’s look a little closer at what the teaser’s telling us because, after all, a picture tells a thousand words. First and foremost the look of the video is different to any form of Halo related material we’ve seen in the past; certain shots of the city even look cel-shaded. The bulk of the trailer looks as though it’s from the perspective of a security camera.
The various images of a calm, futuristic looking city are quickly unsettled with strange objects dropping from the sky. Now as much as these falling objects may resemble meteorites, it doesn’t take long to see that they are manufactured drop-pods. Returning to the shots of the pristine city, it becomes clear that all is not well as smoke and fires can be seen in the corners of various shots. During the shot of the drop-pods falling over the back of the city, a separate, blue explosion occurs below the pods that is reminiscent of the explosion caused by the Prophet of Truth’s capital ship’s jump out of Earth in Halo 2.
Later in the trailer there are quick shots of a same angle street view of with cars and buildings pre and post explosion. At about 30 seconds into the teaser, the security camera resets and flashes up various protocol messages like ‘Expect Delays’, ‘Road Closed’ and other such menial phrases. One of the more interesting phrases however is ‘Danger: Flood Zone’, because as we all know, in the Halo universe ‘Flood’ has meaning beyond a large body of misplaced water.
The teaser trailer wraps up with the necessary inclusions of Bungie, Microsoft Game Studios, Xbox 360 Live, and the cryptic message ‘Prepare to Drop’. Now that the boring exposition is out of the way, it’s time to move onto the more interesting speculation on the next page.
If you downloaded the teaser off Xbox Live, you may have noticed the following text was used to describe the video. “High action and deep mystery await players in this new Halo 3 campaign experience. Prepare to drop.” So much for the video being a teaser as to the nature of the content; Xbox Live spells it out as a “new Halo 3 campaign experience”. With this restriction in mind, let the speculation begin.
The Xbox 360 Live portion of the teaser pretty much limits the feasible speculation to Xbox 360 DLC – so to those few of you holding out for a PS3 or PC version, we’re sorry. Couple this with the Xbox Live teaser description and the idea of an extra Halo 3 campaign experience seems obvious. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s limited to just Master Chief’s part of the Halo 3 narrative.
Although Master Chief used a drop-pod in Halo 2 for a rather stylish entrance onto the game’s Halo, since this entrance he tends to make his drops podless (thus upping the style factor significantly). At the very start of Halo 3 we saw him falling out of the sky without the aid of a drop-pod and he survived the experience intact and ready to kick Brute arse and take names. In this respect, the Chief-less teaser that prominently features drop-pods seems to suggest a tangent Halo 3 narrative external to MC. And why not, there’s plenty of interesting supporting characters who aren’t the Chief; Commander Keyes, the Arbiter or even the badass, cigar smoking, one-liner toting Sergeant Major Avery Johnson.
However, if the Master Chief’s exclusion from the teaser was deliberate and the DLC will be exploring more of his journey, this is not a bad thing either. After the success of the Half Life 2 episodic content, it’s no wonder we haven’t seen more series adopting the bite-sized narrative expansion concept; and what better series than Halo. It’s possible that Halo 3: Episode 1 might be the big news, with MC’s story being delved into a little deeper, or hell, the exploration of supporting characters or someone entirely new. They’ve already got the engine built and refined, so creating extra campaign content with regularly spaced releases is far from impossible.
For fans of the Halo canon, according to the Halo novels the Spartans weren’t the only ace the UNSC had up their sleeve. The Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (or ‘Helljumpers’) were second fiddle only to Spartans and, as their title suggests, specialise in orbital to ground insertions. Running with this idea, the ‘Prepare to Drop’ teaser sign off slots nicely into this theory, and the idea of dropping from the skies to kick Covenant heinie is a proven formula.
If the visual presentation of the teaser is anything to be read into, we may be seeing content that looks remarkably different to what we’ve seen in the Halo universe to date. Aside from the real-life documentary style marketing that was used in Halo 3’s ‘Believe’ advertisements, the look of the teaser trailer is different from what we’ve seen before. Certain shots of the city look cel-shaded and this visual approach is something we’ll be seeing more of in the gaming world. The most notable mention is of course the upcoming Prince of Persia title. Imagine a cel-shaded romp in the Halo universe; the sci-fi setting would certainly suit the visual style to say the least and if the narrative is spawned from the comics/novels then it would also make sense. In particular, the dialogue window that kicks in 30 seconds into the video looks completely out of context with the colour palate and design of Halo.
We’ve trawled the trailer frame by meticulous frame and discovered what looks to be a possible release date (see image above). For once the American date format is a positive in this respect as it looks as though the new content will be available on the 6th of January 2009. It may well be a random line of code, but if Stanley Kubrick ethos is to be believed; everything in a constructed film is there for a reason. Let’s hope that reason is not merely misdirection.
And on that note, the speculation is at an end. Whatever Halo content is dropping our way, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on the latest. But in the meantime check out the related articles below
Nice Danke ;-)05 UhrIn 3 Stunden also.
