The Hollywood Reporter writes that the move was encouraged by the film's director, Chris Nolan.

"We really tried to do a lot with the film technically to give audiences a real reason to go see the film in theaters," Nolan told the publication. "The Blu-ray version is vastly superior to DVD. You can actually see the things we did in Imax, and it will give Academy members the best possible chance to see what we did technically."

"Dark Knight," which debuted theatrically July 18, doesn't face those problems. Nolan, working with his director of photography Wally Pfister, already has mastered the Blu-ray version for the movie's commercial release on DVD and Blu-ray. Warners hasn't announced a street date yet but the betting is that the discs could hit stores Dec. 9.

For "Knight's" Blu-ray incarnation, the director said he was able to approximate the changing aspect ratios of the film's Imax edition. The sections shot in 35mm will play in a letterboxed format, and for the Imax sequences, the image will expand to fill the entire widescreen. While that doesn't capture the complete Imax image, "it still gives us more of the way it was projected in Imax," Nolan said.

Warners will be holding the usual awards-season screenings of the movie, and the film will be rereleased theatrically in January, but Nolan said that if Oscar voters can't make those, "the Blu-ray version is also an excellent way to see the film."

The Dark Knight Blu-ray Limited Edition, More Details
September 26, 2008

Today Warner Home Video has officially announced The Dark Knight is coming to Blu-ray Disc on December 9.

Earlier today we shared what was believed to be the cover art for The Dark Knight at the time. Now that we have artwork direct from Warner it appears that was only a placeholder.

Though not 100% confirmed, there will be two Blu-ray skus for The Dark Knight: a standard edition and a two-disc limited edition box that comes with a Bat-Pod display case. Below you'll see the artwork for each package.

Regardless of version, The Dark Knight will be presented in widescreen 2.4:1 1080p video and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.

We don't have extras to share on the standard edition, if in fact they are different from the limited edition (we don't believe they are). We do know with certainty that the limited edition will include the following.

* Exclusive Bat-Pod Display Case
* Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene
* Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools (HD)
* Batman Unmakes: The Psychology of the Dark Knight (HD)
* Gotham Tonight - 6 Episodes of Gotham's news program
* The Galleries - the Joker Cards, Concept Art, Poster Art, Productions Stills, Trailers, TV Spots
