A revolution in entertainment comes to the UK with Kinect for Xbox 360

LONDON – 10 November 2010 - Xbox 360 heralded the start of a revolutionary new era in controller-free entertainment with a star-studded event last night at the iconic Natural History Museum Ice Rink, celebrating what is already being dubbed this year’s ‘must-have’ Christmas gift -Kinect for Xbox 360.

Hordes of screaming fans lined the streets outside the Museum as celebrities, media and lucky competition winners were treated to exclusive performances from hot new boy-band The Wanted and global super-star Leona Lewis. After the main stage entertainment, celebrities, together with other invited guests, all enjoyed time with Kinect playing Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures and Dance Central.

Rounding out an evening of star-studded Kinect highlights, thousands of people also queued at over 300 retailers including GAME as the first Kinect sensors went on-sale. Those who queued for hours outside GAME’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street were additionally treated to a special guest appearance by The Wanted, who manned the counters to serve the first lucky Kinect purchasers. The band also took part in a live Video Kinect call between GAME’s Oxford Street and Leeds in order to demonstrate yet another of the new platform’s extraordinary capabilities.

Neil Thompson, General Manager of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division (UK & IR), said of last night’s launch activities: “We are delighted to put Kinect into people’s living rooms and turn science fiction into science-fact. Kinect transforms games and entertainment experiences, offering an intuitive and simple way that everyone will enjoy.”

The ‘count-down’ to Kinect’s launch began this past weekend with Samsung our official screen partner for the Kinect for Xbox 360 launch in the UK and Ireland. People were given the chance to experience Kinect for themselves at in specially-commissioned windows at Selfridge’s on Oxford Street. People had their experiences filmed, with the footage set to be screened on Samsung’s digital Jumbotron in London’s famous Piccadilly Circus in the week ahead.

Kinect for Xbox 360 brings games and entertainment to life in extraordinary new ways without using a controller. In a world-first, Kinect lets consumers of all ages enjoy games using your whole body or play movies, listen to music, and video chat simply with a wave of the hand or the sound of your voice.

Kinect launches in the UK today at £129.99 ERP for the stand-alone Kinect Sensor and “Kinect Adventures” game, or £249.99 ERP for the all-in one Xbox 360 Kinect Console Bundle including the new Xbox 360 4GB console and “Kinect Adventures”.

Retailers: Microsoft Kinect will sell out within 24 hours

Having already made something of a splash here in the United States when it debuted on November 4, Microsoft’s new Kinect motion-control gameplay system has launched across the pond to significant consumer fanfare.

More pointedly, hordes of prospective buyers in the United Kingdom queued throughout the evening ahead of Kinect’s midnight launch on November 9, which was probably wise given that the dual-camera motion technology is reportedly selling out fast.

With Xbox 360 fans galore clamouring around the glitzy Kinect launch event at London’s Natural History Museum Ice Rink, the gameplay peripheral’s consumer appeal quickly gathered momentum when the checkouts were opened—leaving retail outlets struggling to meet demand.

Speaking with Pocket-Lint, a spokesperson for GAME said consumer interest is so strong that GAME and other retailers are likely to have drained their initial Kinect allocations before the close of first-day availability.

“There will be stores, and not just ours, that will sell out in 24 hours up and down the country because of [the shortage of] stock,” said Neil Ashurst, head of public relations at GAME. “You will hear reports that it is sold out.”

Microsoft Kinect, which completely drops gameplay reliance on physical button-heavy controllers, costs 129.99 GBP as a standalone purchase complete with Kinect Adventures.

A separate hardware bundle containing Kinect, a 4GB Xbox 360 console, and Kinect Adventures costs 249.99 GBP. There are 17 Kinect-compatible videogames available for the platform, including titles such as Dance Central and Kinect Sports.

“We are delighted to put Kinect into people’s living rooms and turn science fiction into science-fact,” enthused Neil Thompson, GM of Microsoft’s Xbox division in the United Kingdom and Ireland. “Kinect transforms games and entertainment experiences, offering an intuitive and simple way that everyone will enjoy.”

'Thousands' Line-Up As Microsoft Launches Kinect

Microsoft’s eagerly-awaited Kinect device is now on sale after enjoying a gittering lunch party at London’s Natural History Museum last night.

During the event, pop group The Wanted and X Factor star Leona Lewis were there to welcome the Kinect’s arrival with attendees skating at the museum’s open-air ice rink or playing at one of the many game booths.

Retailers up and down the country witnessed thousands of consumers lining-up to buy Microsoft’s £130 device.

However, stock is expected to be an issue with some customers expected to be left disappointed.

“We are delighted to put Kinect into people’s living rooms and turn science fiction into science-fact,” Microsoft’s general manager for the Entertainment and Devices Division in the UK and Ireland Neil Thompson stated.

“Kinect transforms games and entertainment experiences, offering an intuitive and simple way that everyone will enjoy.”

UK Kinect launch - Pics

Last night, Microsoft's Kinect officially arrived in the UK - with creative lead Kudo Tsunoda personally greeting fans at the Game Oxford Street launch event. And we've got loads of pics right here.

The evening started off with a civilised, family-friendly visit to the London Natural History Museum, where Leona Lewis and boy band The Wanted performed above a glowing ice rink as David Braben, Lionhead and Rare developers looked on.

The festivities really kicked off, however, when we got to the GAME Oxford Street launch - where the afternoon's loyal band of queuers had swelled to dozens of screaming fans.

Pizza was served, t-shirts were flung and Kudo himself turned up at around 10:30pm to act as generous host, chatting to anyone curious enough to extend a hand.

The night clearly held deep meaning for the Kinect lead, who was snapping his own personal photos and admiring the wall of game boxes all night long.

And when the clock struck 12 and the first in line took their ceremonial walk to the tills (the first to make a purchase was, yes, a girl) the Sunglasses-wearing designer was on side to shake the hands of everyone who'd turned up to pick up the 360 motion camera - and it seemed to come from the heart.

CVG joined the back of the line - along with Kudo, who was purchasing for a friend - to pick up our own Kinect box.

The night didn't carry quite the same electric atmosphere as a full console launch, but the fans who committed to a chilly twilight shopping trip left pleased.

However, it's those gamers who didn't turn up to the midnight launch Microsoft will have to convince - and as a first step Kinect's opening hour went as smoothly and well organised as possible.

Microsoft Kinect to sell out by Christmas?

Xbox 360 motion-sensing camera hits high street

The device, which has hit UK shelves today and is priced at £129.99, is an add-on that will enable Xbox users to play games by moving parts of their body, rather than a handheld controller. The technology can also identify different people's faces and recognise different voices.

According to electronics retailer Best Buy, the device is likely to be to be one of the most popular products in the run up to Christmas.

"We are preparing ourselves for brisk demand for the Kinect, especially with Christmas present buying now on most people's minds. Availability is very limited and on a first-come, first-served basis, but we expect deliveries between now and Christmas," said Harry Parmar, commercial director at Best Buy UK.

"Following the success of the Nintendo Wii, and the Sony Playstation 3 and its Move device, increasingly consumers are looking to gaming devices as a way to have fun with friends and family and to keep active."

Microsoft Kinect also ships with a copy of Kinect Adventures - a game collection compatible with the motion-sensing camera that includes a white water rapids race and a ball batting game.

Today's games use 20-30% of Kinect‎

Blitz Games claims to be getting nearly twice as much out of Kinect as everyone else. Those games you see on the shelves today - they're using barely a third of what the new device can do.

"A lot of the games you're seeing are using 20 to 30 per cent of what Kinect's capable of," Blitz Games' Steve Stopps remarked to Eurogamer. "What we're doing is using probably 50 to 60 per cent.

"What most developers are starting to do now is they're realising that under the hood of what Kinect can do there's a whole world of potential we're only really just scratching."

The Kinect Sports and the Kinect Adventures and the Dance Centrals of the world are using Kinect in a very "obvious" way, Stopps declared. Yoostar 2, Blitz' game, adopts an "innovative" approach.

Yoostar 2 takes clips from famous films and puts you in them. For instance, Arnold Schwarzenegger telling the Police clerk "I'll be back": you'll watch the scene once and then Arnie will be cut out you will fill his shoes - Kinect removes you from your living room and places you in the scene in real-time.

This process was only possible on PC because Yoostar 1 shipped with a green screen. The PS3 Move version almost had to ship a green-screen, too - until Stopps and team worked out a clever get-around for the PlayStation Eye.

"You'll see a lot of the games coming out in the first generation aren't using much of the voice recognition technology," Stopps continued. "That will add a whole new layer to what people can do within a game and what people can engage with.

"You'll also find that every single game at the moment is a Kinect only game. There's a whole world of opportunities for games to use both controller and Kinect together to deliver a different experience.

"And the third thing," he added, "is the most important: it's the different design approach required to design a Kinect game. It's not necessarily a functionality that exists, it's designing a game with a Kinect mentality - approaching a game from an utterly different direction. You're trying to think of engaging ways to use the body and voice recognition to create immersive and fun gameplay."

When that potential is unlocked, Stopps is "100 per cent yes" convinced that Kinect can support core game experiences.

"Imagine playing something like Halo or like Call of Duty where you're holding a controller in your hand but if you want to look round a corner you actually move your head and the camera position changes," he dreamed. "Those kind of experiences you can create to blend the best of Kinect and the best of a controller."

Yoostar 2 will be released for Kinect and Move in Q1 2011 - "around 21st February," Stopps said. Johnny Minkley talked to Spock about it.

Kinect was released yesterday here in the UK. Eurogamer's comprehensive Kinect coverage - including reviews of the launch games and the hardware - can be found on the homepage.
