NPD predicts PS3 sales to increase by 40-60% post price drop

The NPD Group, famed tabulator of video game hardware and software sales, says it sees the new $299 price point of PlayStation 3 contributing to a significant sales boost for the system. "We would expect to see in the range of a 40% to 60% unit sales increase when September sales are reported," NPD analyst Anita Frazier told InformationWeek. We'll see how accurate of an estimate that was when the September NPD data hits mid-October.

Frazier added, "The $299 price point is important to getting to a point where the next segment of price-conscious consumers can jump into the market and it most certainly will re-energize sales of the platform." So, basically, a cheaper PS3 will sell better because people are more likely to take the plunge at a cheaper price. We know that analysts get paid to offer their opinions, but this just ... gave us an idea!

aber nur für September wenn ich das richtig verstanden hab oder ?
ansonsten sind sich die auch nicht so sicher dass das anhalten wird

Sony to Own the Holidays With Rumored PS3 Slim Bundle

Sales have already skyrocketed for Sony’s PlayStation 3, ever since the new PS3 Slim’s announcement and $100 price drop on all existing models went into effect. If this information of a rumored bundle is indeed true, Sony is out for blood in the console wars and looking to steal the #1 Holiday Season sales spot.

While speaking with a source close to Sony, we have received word that Sony is not only prepping Gran Turismo 5 for the holiday season, but it will be bundled with a 250GB PS3 slim for the price of $399. Along with Gran Turismo 5 and the 250GB PS3, we’ve been told to expect a voucher to some type of downloadable game, to help introduce new PS3 owners to the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Network. Though as to which downloadable game is to be included is still up in the air.

This information doesn’t come from our regular source, but given how the previous “premium” PS3 bundle featured another flagship PS3 title, larger HDD, and a voucher for the downloadable game Pain, this proposed bundle certainly sounds feasible. Especially after the recent filings of the 250GB PS3 Slim being unveiled and the Gamescom Gran Turismo 5 brochure claiming a Q4 2009 release.

Having a lower priced standalone 120GB PS3 slim, paired with a “premium” 250GB PS3 slim/GT5 bundle would certainly stir up sales come this holiday season.

Since we don’t expect any confirmation for quite some time, please chalk this up as a rumor for the time being. Also our source suggested that this bundle will only be available if Gran Turismo 5 does indeed release during the planned Q4 2009 window. We will be sure to keep you up-to-date if anything else is uncovered.

Xbox 360 Console Tops Sales Chart!

3863960167_764c0df5f0.jpg

The just announced, but long rumored Xbox 360 Elite price cut has kicked into gear. It is now available for $299.99 at most retailers! In addition, Xbox 360 Pro (60GB) model is being offered at the $249.99 price until supplies last.

The Xbox 360 Elite and Pro models hasve been discounted for a few hours now, but have already rocketed to the top of the Amazon Movers & Shakers List.

Another big reason for the sales surge is that Amazon is offering a free 12 Month Gold card ($49.99 value) with the Xbox 360 Elite, and a free game with the Xbox 360 Pro model.

They are limiting this promotion to 1 per customer, and it ends September 1, 2009.

Guitar Hero 5 preorders increased by 30% this week in the final few days before the game's launch, total preorders now at nearly 250,000 copies. In the big battle for music game supremacy, The Beatles: Rock Band continues to lead the way with over 350,000 preorders and another week to go yet before release. This shouldn't be a suprise, looking back to last year's games we see the following:

Guitar Hero 4 Rock Band 2

Week 1 Total Week 1 Total
X360 263,500 1,620,000 328,500 1,520,000
PS3 119,000 850,000 102,500 650,000
Wii 218,500 2,310,000 78,500 690,000
PS2 107,500 880,000 34,500 240,000
Total 708,500 5,660,000 544,000 3,100,000

A number of differences present themselves this year:

* Rock Band has the enormous advantage of the Beatles name and the marketing that brings. Special edition Beatles instruments will be a must-have for fans.
* The release dates for Rock Band last year were staggered - the 360 version came out first, a month later the PS3 version launched, a month later the PS2 version and finally the Wii version released just before christmas. This greatly harmed the sales of the non-Xbox360 versions, especially on Wii and especially with Guitar Hero launching so much earler.
* The full band version of Guitar Hero will be released as a seperate game this year - Band Hero which will not launch alongside Guitar Hero 5.

Based on these, it is entirely sensible that Rock Band should outperform Guitar Hero this year - the preorder data certainly supports that notion.

Other games performing well this week include Halo: ODST which should easily pass one million preorders before launch, Assassin's Creed 2 which continues to do well and New Super Mario Bros Wii which should see a large increase in preorders closer to release.

Check back next week for the latest movers and last weeks chart is available here

Just a heads up since it is a big week and you are all keen to see how everything has done before the official release on Thursday:

* PS3 is up about 85% this week (~70k) - slims available but limited to only some retailers and in limited quantities - next week should be 90-100k in the Americas with the slim being fully available everywhere

* Xbox360 is up about 30% this week (~75k), should be up a little more next week with a full week of Elite price cut

* Arkham Asylum did about 550k combined (360 juuuuust on top but not conclusively given margin of error)

* Dissidia did around 180k - PSP bundle did well
