UBISOFT® REPORTS FIRST-HALF 2008-09 SALES

 Second-quarter sales up 37% to €175 million, outstripping targets.

 Marked increase expected for first-half current operating income.

 Targets raised for full-year 2008-09.

 Update on the games release schedule.

Paris, October 23, 2008 – Today, Ubisoft reported its sales for the fiscal half-year ended September 30, 2008.

Sales

Sales for the first half of 2008-09 came to €344 million, up 31.5%, or 38.3% at constant exchange rates, compared with the €261 million recorded for the same period of 2007-08.

Second-quarter sales totaled €175 million, representing an increase of 37.3% (43.6% at constant exchange rates) on the €127 million posted for the second quarter of 2007-08. This performance – which exceeded the guidance of approximately €160 million issued when Ubisoft released its sales figures for first-quarter 2008-09 – was primarily attributable to:

− The successful launches of Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway™ and SoulCalibur™IV (Europe) for the Xbox360™ and PLAYSTATION®3.

− Solid sales turned in by casual games including new titles such as Imagine® Teacher, My Secret World by Imagine™ and PlayZone™ Sports Party.

Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer, stated: "Ubisoft delivered a robust performance in the second fiscal quarter against an uncertain environment. We are carefully and regularly monitoring changes in the economic context in order to factor them into our market forecasts and financial targets. Going forward, we are confident that the video game industry will be able to continue its dynamic growth in 2008 and 2009, buoyed by the increase in the installed base for consoles coupled with the steady influx of new consumers. At the same time, we believe that thanks to the diversity and quality of Ubisoft’s games line-up – which caters to both hard-core and casual gamers – we are ideally positioned to continue to win market share in the coming years. Holiday 2008 will be another demonstration of this, as we are introducing a gaming experience for everyone with the following titles:
− Far Cry® 2 and Tom Clancy's End War™ for hard-core gamers.
− Rayman Raving Rabbids® 3 and the PlayZone range, designed to be played by the whole family on the Wii.
− Prince of Persia® for adventure-seeking gamers, and Shaun White for sport and snowboarding fans.
− The Petz® and Imagine ranges, designed for girls, and Jake Power™ for boys as well as the ENER-G sport range dedicated to the US market.
− The Planet Rescue™ range, which will give children the opportunity to take an interest in protecting the environment, as well as the MyCoach range which will enable adults to both learn and look after their well-being while playing."

Outlook

Increase expected for first-half current operating income
Based on currently available information, Ubisoft expects current operating income before stock options to represent a marked increase compared with the 3.4% of sales recorded for the first half of 2007-08. This rise mainly reflects the leverage effect on structure costs related to the strong increase in sales, as well as the favorable impact of the “Games for Everyone” range which requires a low level of R&D expenditure.

Sales for the third quarter of 2008-09
The third quarter of 2008-09 will be the most important and diversified quarter in Ubisoft's history, with the following main releases:

− Far Cry 2 for the Xbox360™, PC and PLAYSTATION®3

− Prince of Persia for Xbox360™, PC, PLAYSTATION®3 and Nintendo DS™

− Shaun White for the Wii™, Xbox360™, PC, PLAYSTATION®3, Nintendo DS™, PSP™ and PLAYSTATION®2

− Rayman Raving Rabbids 3 for the Wii™ and Nintendo DS

− Tom Clancy's EndWar for the Xbox360™, PC and PLAYSTATION®3, Nintendo DS™ and PSP™,

− New casual games for the Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ for the Petz, Imagine, MyCoach, ENER-G (US), Jake Power, Planet Rescue, and PlayZone ranges.

Consequently, the Group expects third-quarter 2008-09 sales to come in at around €500 million, up 11% on the same period of 2007-08.

Update on the games release schedule
In view of the good first-half trends and the positive outlook for the third quarter, Ubisoft has decided that Anno™ as well as the as-yet unannounced franchise which were previously scheduled to be released in 2008-09 will now bolster the line-up for 2009-10.

Targets raised for full-year 2008-09
Based on solid first-half sales performance combined with a more favorable dollar impact and the positive third-quarter outlook, Ubisoft is raising its targets for full-year 2008-09. The full-year sales guidance is now around €1,050 million compared with the previous figure of around €1,020 million, and the guidance for current operating income before stock options has been revised upward to at least 13% of sales versus the previous target of at least 12%.

Hier noch etwas zusammengefasst von 4Players auf Deutsch:

4,4 Mrd. Dollar Gewinn in Q1
Julian
Quelle: Microsoft IR

Spieler Xbox Live.

PS3 profitability cast in doubt, 2008 earnings forecast grim

If you've opened a newspaper, turned on the TV, or looked at your stock portfolio, you must know the story: the global economy is in shambles. And that hurts large global companies, like Sony. Sony has updated their 2008 forecast, slashing profit expectations 38% to to 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion). A strong yen makes Sony, a export-centric company, do worse. The global downturn in the economy is likely to strongly the affect the sales of their top-ticket items, such as high definition TVs, cameras.

In spite of promises to make the PS3 profitable this year, it appears that may be cast in doubt. With the system significantly more expensive than its competitors, and a price drop not likely in the immediate future, this holiday season may not continue PS3's momentum from the beginning of the year. That's a shame too, considering the slew of high quality titles that's just about to come about.

"This is just the beginning of a big earnings collapse," said a Tokyo-based analyst to Forbes.com. "Given the track record of this company, it will under-deliver all the way." He added that there is a "good chance" Sony will post a loss this year.

Sony in großen Schwierigkeiten :lol2:

Sony shares have now fallen to their lowest point in 13 years.

Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda said Sony, which earned 77 percent of sales overseas last year, may cut spending and shut some factories to weather ``this difficult time.'' The company intends to come up with reorganization measures as soon as possible, he said.

Some analysts are expecting Sony to not even meet its current full year profit forcast despite it having already been cut twice in the last two quarters with the last one being a 57% drop.

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Finances Tell A Tale Of Two Consoles

The latest financial numbers for the PS3 and Xbox 360 tell two starkly different stories that could be harbingers of things to come for console owners.
It's far too early to tell for now, but nevertheless there are indicators appearing today that hint Microsoft and Sony's console divisions are setting the table for an uncertain future.

The thing is, while one company enters the uncertain territory of a profitable console business, the other, known until now for its powerful, unfaltering brand, is entering what appears to be its most uncertain, darkest days yet. Also uncertain is what you, the gamers, should expect from your investments going forward. That's a whole lot of uncertainty going on.

For Xbox 360 owners, the future looks, in a word, "brighter."

On Thursday, Microsoft was quick to tout its latest numbers, which revealed a $15.1 billion revenue record. Better yet for Redmond was the news that Xbox 360 shipments were up to 2.2. million units, compared to just 1.8 million this time last year.

The gains come at a good time for Microsoft, which today is on the verge of releasing a major Xbox 360 interface update, called the New Xbox Experience (NXE). Featuring Mii-like avatars, a new menu system, and enhanced multimedia features, NXE is a risky play for the current Xbox 360 audience, but increased sales and console price cuts could help the update cement new non-traditional gamers in the Microsoft corner.

The recent success comes at a price, however. Earlier this year, Microsoft was forced to issue a costly multi-billion dollar restructured 3-year warranty program due to prohibitively high Xbox 360 failure rates. This was also the year that saw the console's year-long head start over the Nintendo Wii evaporate into nothingness.

So it was a hard knock life for Microsoft in 2007, but these continued profits--surely a strange, but welcome, feeling for Xbox execs--should translate into new games, technologies and R&D for the platform (as they have for Nintendo). In many respects, it has already stared--see also: Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360.

Sony, on the other hand, would probably like to forget this week ever happened.

After modest gains throughout the year, the PS3 now languishes in last place for monthly sales in Japan; a country seen by many observers as a leading indicator for the industry's direction in the rest of the world.

Even key exclusives, once a staple of the PlayStation brand's power over the industry, have slipped from Sony's grasp this year in one way or another. On the one hand, Metal Gear Solid 4 launched with solid sales numbers and a New York City party that rivaled some Hollywood films, but quickly fizzled out in about a month.

On the other hand, Final Fantasy XIII, previously an unquestioned lock as a PS3 uber-exclusive, has drifted over to the Xbox 360 camp for a North America and European launch sometime in the ambiguous future.

And then, just this week, the hammer fell. On Thursday, Sony surprised and alarmed analysts and gamers alike when it announced a 57% cut in profit forecasts.

Now, financials might seem like a yawn-inducing turn of events to some of you, but take note of the fact that Sony signaled out its games division as a key area where those cuts would take place.

"We expect our results to be lower than the July forecast with operating income decreasing by approximately 130 billion yen, mainly within the Electronics and the Game segments," Sony said. Related reports saw the PS3 "leaking sales" in Japan, North America and Europe.

In layman's terms, this means less R&D for the PS3 and PSP, fewer games, and less development on riskier titles. At least until Sony's situation improves, anyway.

The announcement came on the heels of an equally troubling Sony announcement that saw a Japanese spokesperson yearning for Xbox 360 success in the country. The crux of the statement was that HD gaming, a cornerstone of the console alongside the fledgling Blu-ray, has not taken off quite as quickly as Sony would have liked in Japan.

But it's obviously not all doom and gloom for the PS3, and to say so would ignorantly ignore titles like LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and even Home, if and when Sony figures out what they want to do with it. There's a number of other first party goodness to be had too on the PS3, which Sports Legends has covered already. The PSP 3000, Sony's bright new handheld update, is also doing incredibly strong in Japan and elsewhere this week. It was something Patrick Seybold, Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media at Sony pointed out in an email to Sports Legends today:

"As you know, the games business remains strong and we increased our PSP WW forecast by one million. We have no plans to change/alter our marketing initiatives based on this and continue to aggressively promote our products," he said.

Nevertheless, the present situations for both companies are distinct and undeniable. As a gamer, it will be interesting to see how their respective reactions going forward will translate into better games--either to sustain growth for Microsoft, or recapture it with Sony.
