October 12, 2004 - There's a new Yoshi game coming out in Japan on 12/9. While we've mentioned Yoshi Universal Gravitation (Yoshi no Banyuuin Ryoko in Japan) on IGN before, we haven't gotten around to telling you what exactly the game is all about. So, here you go: an update on this latest game starring the green mascot.

In Yoshi Universal Gravitation, Yoshi Island has been turned into a picture book. Yoshi will not stand for this outlandish attempt at flattening his world, and he heads off on an adventure to return things back to their original state. To help in on his quest, a group of spirits who like to surprise people give Yoshi the ability to rotate the world to his liking.

The big catch with Yoshi Universal Gravitation is its use of a motion sensor, similar to the one set to be featured in Mawaru Made in Wario, the Japanese sequel to Wario Ware. The game cartridge includes a built in motion sensor which detects how you move the GBA system. By turning the system, you make the world rotate. A meter on the upper right corner of the screen shows which way the system is being held at any time

We currently know of a simple example in which this system is used. In a few screenshots, Yoshi is standing over a curved, icy valley. Rotating the GBA makes Yoshi fall into the valley, and by carefully timing your turns, you can make Yoshi gather all the coins that line the valley floor. Other uses of the rotation system will be more advanced, making players put on their thinking caps.

In addition to the ability to rotate things, Yoshi also has the ability to change form. You'll have to change into other creatures in order to get through the stages. Currently, we know of one example, where Yoshi changes into a balloon and floats through the stage. There will be many other examples beyond this.

We're not sure when we'll get a chance to try out Yoshi Universal Gravitation prior to its Japanese release date, but this week's Japanese release of Mawaru Made in Wario should at least give us an idea of how the rotation feature will work. Stay tuned for impressions on Wario later this week.
