Japan Sales Comparison - Famitsu, Media Create,VGChartz http://www.vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=330
So how accurate are sales figures? How close do they have to be to each other to be considered accurate? Since Japan is the only region that offers two professional sales tracking services, we take a look at these two and compare their figure to each other and to those provided by VGChartz.
For the week ending 5/20/2007, Famitsu, Media Create, and VGChartz give the following hardware and software sales:
Famitsu Media Create VGChartz

As you can see, the hardware and software sales are off by as much as 14% between Famitsu and Media Create. VGChartz numbers tend to agree very well with Famitsu numbers - with the exception of the PSP hardware (29% over), there is no more than 12% difference for the other available numbers. A few entries have larger differences from Media Create: 22% higher for PSP hardware, 34% higher for New Super Mario Bros. (DS), and 18% lower for Final Fantasy 12: RW (DS).
What does this mean, exactly? While definite conclusions can't be drawn from such limited data, it does appear that even two professional tracking services can differ by as much as 14% occassionally. Any numbers that fall within this range, without being consistently higher or consistently lower, then, would seem to be acceptable for VGChartz.
Clearly there is still some ways to go to consistently reach this mark, as there are still a few outliers in the VGChartz data, such as the PSP hardware sales. While Famitsu numbers were not available at this time for those software entries where VGChartz was far off from the Media Create figures, it is noted that VGChartz was not conistently above or below the other tracking services' numbers - in fact, they often fell in between the two.
What conclusions do you make from this data?
