Meine Meinung:

Massively Multiplayer Online Game = MMOG

@Star Trek Online

Setting, Story
  • Takes place in 2409, 30 years after Nemesis
  • Movies, TV shows are canon, novels and comics as "soft canon" inspiration.
  • Federation and Klingon factions. Expect Dominion and Romulan in the future.
  • Things aren't as friendly between the two factions.
Game Design
  • Combat, Adventure
    • Everyone "captains" a ship. You don't start out as a captain and you don't have to be a captain to command.
    • As you rank up, you'll earn better ships
    • Selectable, customizable bridge crew to beam to a planet.
    • Holograms. Emmert views them as possible members of your bridge crew. Assign a hologram as your science officer. They can be playable with some limitations.
    • Crews are "player controlled, AI driven" pets. Bridge crews, redshirts. You can equip them with better gear, level them up
    • Space, ship interior, and ground adventures
    • Ship gameplay. Tactical, slow paced, commanding crews. "Send security team to deck 5. Engineering to repair a hull breach. Divert power to from engines to shields."
    • Ground combat. Phasers, disrupters, ducking for cover, hand to hand.
    • Multiple captains(players) can adventure together
    • The computer or central command will issue you tours of duty, some very specific, some not that will act as your quests. Not a level based game.

  • Exploration, Economy, Diplomacy
    • Star Trek is not just about combat. Always been about exploration and adventure.
    • Exploration is a major part of gameplay.
    • You can discover new worlds and new civilizations. "System of infinite exploration."
    • They are creating a system of planets and solar systems and civilizations that you can be the first to adventure to. Making first contact, study a prewarp civilization from afar.
    • All of these planets will offer resources, technology, knowledge that will funnel back to either faction for new equipment, new technology.
    • Races you discover could join your crew. Could have a bridge crew member of a race you made first contact with.
    • Galactic economy. Constant exploration and discovery drives demand for goods and resources across the galaxy.
    • Trades can flow back and forth the factions.
    • Diplomacy is important. Emmert lists examples in the lore. He agrees with its importance but can't discuss what they've discussed or how they will implement it.

  • Mechanics
    • They haven't straightened out player death yet. They want it to be something minimal. "The days of outrageous penalties are long passed us. Can't we just have fun?"
    • Dynamic events, like the Borg invading certain sectors and then players having to come through and clear them out. Tholians could get a bit uppity. Players actions take a part in the events.
    • Definite Klingon versus Starfleet PvP.
    • Missions will be completable in groups. A "task force" PUG or with your fleetmates.
    • There will be a class system. Command is part of your career path. You will have a specialty. Science, engineering, tactical, security, navigation.
    • Not traditional MMO combat in space or guilds.
    • Planning to board other peoples ships. To show off how you've decked it out, not necessarily a gameplay element.
Customization, Ships
  • City of Heroes-style customization, choosing from existing Star Trek races or making your own. Customize their weight, height, etc.
  • Custom ship appearances. Nacelles, saucers, colors, decals. Reconfigure ships within certain guidelines depending on ship.
  • Plan every ship to have decks, layouts, medical facilities, holodeck.
Community
  • Player "fleets", STO's guilds. Pool your resources to build mining platforms, space stations, satellites, which can build shipyards to build better, larger ships which you can give to your fleet.
  • Fleets wont be identical to EVE Corporations, but they think the level of cooperation and coordination is very cool and they're looking at that
Development, Technology
  • There is a release date set, but they aren't announcing it.
  • Started building content as soon as they got the license. The game is up and running, playable at their offices thanks to their tech and team.
  • The trailer is in-game footage of actual players
  • Very important that they don't make a typical MMORPG with Star Trek wrapped around it.
  • Every single member of the team is required to watch a series.
  • Hired a Star Trek writer to help them with it.
  • Emmert has done tons of research, has seen all the series, is reading the novels. Bought all the post-Nemesis books.
  • World of Warcraft inspired them their "explicit goal" to run on a wide range of systems, just as it is with Champions Online.
  • They aren't using motion capture. Hand drawn animation. They feel their animators are best in the business.
  • "Less than 4 years, probably less than 3 years to develop."
  • An MMO has to be inherently fun. If the game isn't entertaining to them, they wont release it. They design games that they want to play
  • To reduce the tedium of usual MMORPGs, the only guarantee they can make is to to keep it fun so players will stay.
  • They want to be able to get into the game and enjoy it. They want it to be fun, not work.
  • They haven't discussed server structure. Emmert wants one giant server for everyone to play together. Their tech can handle it, but it depends on their agreements, which systems it is on.
  • They like to make games for people of all ages.
  • They wont support Linux or Mac in the first release.

@darji
