http://www.trektoday.com/news/090704_04.shtmlThe Romulan Wars are tipped to be the subject of the next Star Trek feature film.
Enterprise executive producer Brannon Braga reportedly told the Star Trek Communicator that the series may not be able to feature the Romulan Wars because of a possible clash with the upcoming movie.
"It's certainly one of the things that we've been discussing," Braga reportedly said. "But there's also a prequel feature in development regarding the Romulan Wars, so we might have to stay away from that." In the same magazine, franchise head honcho Rick Berman said Trek XI would be set before the time of Kirk, but would not be connected with Enterprise.
The first sighting of the Romulans came in the second-season episode, "Minefield", in which the NX-01 inadvertantly strayed into Romulan territory. According to established Star Trek lore, the Romulan Neutral Zone was established in 2160 after a long war between Earth and the Romulans. With "Zero Hour" taking place in 2154, the Romulan Wars could conceivably take place during Enterprise's run.
Braga also discussed the storylines in development for Enterprise's fourth season, including the return of the Temporal Cold War. "One thing we're discussing is possibly blowing the lid off the Temporal Cold War once and for all," he reportedly said. "That's probably something we'll do in this first storyline. I can't say that for sure, because we're just getting into it. But I'd really like to resolve that and put a cap on it. It would be a nice thing to do after three seasons of teasing it along."
The foundation of the Federation could also start to figure heavily in the series. "There are going to be some major interstellar events and conflicts happening that could involve the forming of the federation. We're going to see more of what's going on back at Earth. We might see something dealing with the Eugenics Wars."

[...] Paramount is a studio that seems to be scrambling to figure out just what its identity is. For the last five years, it seems like theyve been the home of stalled, desperately un-hip franchises, Ashley-Judd-in-peril movies, and weak Billy Friedkin pity gigs. They seem to be working to change that, though, with films like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and A PRINCESS OF MARS in the pipeline. I want to believe that Paramount can turn it around.
But when I hear about their plans for STAR TREK, I have to wonder. Are they unable to tell a good idea from a bad one where this particular franchise is concerned? Im not the worlds biggest fan of TREK in any flavor, but I sympathize with TREK fans. You guys have it rough. And its about to get rougher.
First, the good news. No Berman. No Braga. Instead, Jordan Kerner (SNOW DOGS, INSPECTOR GADGET, THE MIGHTY DUCKS and D2 and D3) is being brought in to produce. Right now, hes in the early stages of developing a prequel trilogy. First question, obviously, is "a prequel to what?" After all, the various TV shows have played all sorts of tricks with the timeline. When I hear "prequel trilogy," it sounds to me like were going to see young Kirk and young Spock and young McCoy. It sounds to me like were talking about Starfleet Academy.
Instead, were looking at films that sound like theyre all about big intergalactic events, but which dont appear to be about any characters, which is what Gene Roddenberrys original vision was ALWAYS about. Characters. Dont just try to tell some big budget spectacle story. I hear the first films about a civil war, the second films devoted largely to the galactic switch-over from a fission standard to fusion, and then theres a third film where well finally see an Ensign Kirk show up for all of about the last 20 minutes. Just Kirk. Nobody else. And no ENTERPRISE.
And that notion theyre discussing in hushed and excited tones about putting William Shatners head on a younger actors body? Easily the goofiest bad idea Ive heard since Lex Luthor, flying Kryptonian. It almost makes me want to see them do it, just for the laugh value.
Youre still really early in this process, Paramount, so please... allow me to offer a little bit of constructive criticism. You need to listen to your fans. And Im not saying listen to me. Read the message boards that are out there. Cast as wide a net as you can across fandom and let the fans remind you just what it is that made TREK so important to them in the first place. Reach out and take the time to get it right. Dont just chase STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS, and dont throw money at it just to make STAR TREK into something it never was.
Im going to try to bring you more details about this proposed trilogy as they continue working on it, and in the meantime, Ill hand it over to the real TREK fans, you guys. What do you think of Paramounts plans? [...]

[...] Speaking in issue #117, Berman confirms for the first time that he is now developing a Star Trek feature film project: "I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next Star Trek movie," reveals Berman, in an excerpt provided by Dreamwatch. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."
Unwilling to offer many details he cryptically describes it as "a prequel" without any further elaboration. The names of his producing cohorts will have to remain unknown for now, as well. [...]

[...] We can confirm that the prequel that Paramount is working on is indeed a Starfleet Academy storyline. They have hired a writer that is currently putting that story together. No word yet if it involves any of the known TOS characters but we do know that it is the same prequel the Berman recently talked to Dreamwatch magazine about. Let's remember that Kirk and Spock did not attend the Academy together so hopefully they don't put the last nail in the coffin of that franchise by changing the known Star Trek Universe.
Rick Berman seems to remain aboard but there will be new producers. Rumor has it that Berman is left with a title of Producer in the same sense that Gene Rodenberry at the end also had a so-called "Producer" title. [...]
