NEC and MoSys announce milestone for GCN's main memory.
October 15, 2002 - NEC, home to production of GameCube's highly integrated graphics/sound chip and main memory, has announced in conjunction with MoSys that it has shipped more than 25 million units of the 12MB density 1T-SRAM. Given that GameCube's main memory consists of 24MB of 1T-SRAM, we can assume that this allocation is enough for use in just over 12 million of the consoles. This announcement piggybacks IBM's recent announcement that it hit the 10 million unit landmark for production of the Gekko MPU, the PowerPC processor that powers GameCube.
Complimenting NEC and MoSys, Perrin Kaplan, vice president, marketing and corporate affairs at NOA, noted, "We are very pleased with the successful partnership we have with both NEC and MoSys, allowing us to leverage their technologies to produce a unique gaming experience with Nintendo GameCube for our customers."
Takashi Okuda, chief manager of the System Memory Development Division at NEC said about the deal, "NEC is delighted to continue its long-term relationship with Nintendo with the achievement of this significant production milestone for the Nintendo GameCube."
The two companies are so pleased with the current situation that MoSys and NEC have agreed to extend the license agreement for the 1T-SRAM technologies for sure in additional projects with geometries down to 90 nonometers.
"MoSys is proud of its contribution to the success of Nintendo GameCube," commented Mark-Eric Jones, vice president and general manager of intellectual property at MoSys. "These new NEC agreements build on the production success to broaden our relationship into additional processes and geometries."
Nintendo has made no announcements regarding whether or not it plans to use MoSys technologies in any future products
