Was kommt dabei raus, wenn man Steel Batalion, Yugi Oh Trading Cards und Schiffe versenken vermischt?

Gundam will ruin my life (and my wallet) #1
Yesterday, BudokaiMR2 and I were at Round 1 (bowling/soccer/arcade) in Kyoto, and after weeks of deliberation, finally picked up decks to start playing Gundam 0079: Card Builder.
For those who don`t know, 0079 is a Gundam action strategy game where you build mechs using card decks. You get fold out plastic sheets where you insert your cards, and then put them on the game`s playing field, which senses the cards, and transfers data to the screen. Every arcade unit for the game is huge, as it has a large wide screen (probably 60-70 inches easily) at the very front, and about 20 gaming stations in front of it. When you first start your game, you place your character decks on the play field, and choose which ones to use. Since every card has a `cost,` you can`t stack your mechs with crazy weapons and become overpowered.
On the flip side, when Budokai and I were playing, Zeon had way more players than Federation, so we got a cost bonus to compensate. Once you`ve chosen your mechs on your own game screen, you look up to the giant wide screen and move your cursor around to pick which theater you want to fight in. Since the game has an IC Card (a personalized game profile that comes with each deck), your wins, losses, name, character experience and a host of other stats are saved after every game.
Barrier for entry for the game is sadly pretty high for an arcade game. A starter pack costs 1000 yen, and each game costs 300 yen. The high cost for the game can be attributed to the fact that you get a card from the game after every match. Because of this cool little mechanic, you can customize your deck more and more almost immediately.
Here`s what the starter deck comes with:
10 cards
- 2x character cards (your pilots)
- 2x custom cards (additional ability for your mech)
- 4x weapon cards (weapons...)
- 2x mechanic cards (your mech)
2 fold out card holders
10 protective plastic slips for cards
1 Game Manual
So you basically start out with 2 low cost units when you`re playing, but if, for instance, you were to get a very powerful mech or character, or even a weapon, you may only be able to use one. Some weapons even have a custom card that you need to use with it. For instance, my starter deck had a beam gun in it, and with it, a beam generator pack custom card. In order to use the beam gun (which seriously wrecks shit), you need to have the generator in your unit`s custom slot.
I was apprehensive about the game at first, as it would be a fairly large investment to get into a game that could potentially suck. Fortunately, the game is actually a lot of fun, and really addictive. Budokai and I are still thinking about going to Namba this afternoon to play some more, and hopefully get some new mechs and characters.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is the way it is networked. While Budokai and I have been trying to only play computer for now to practice and get better decks, we`re both really excited to begin playing against real opponents in the future. Some of your opponents aren`t even in the same arcade.
I`d post some gameplay pics, but I can`t seem to find decent sized ones.
