Okiraku Ping-Pong pushes the 40MB size limit for WiiWare. It's a fully 3-D ping-pong game with four characters and three stages, plus three mini-games. Plus, it's actually pretty fun.
The game mechanics are simple enough that I didn't need to read the instructions before playing. Your character moves automatically. Toss the Wiimote up to serve, then swing away. It doesn't seem like swinging with extra power does much of anything. The key is timing: If you swing early, you'll do a forehand and send the ball to the left. Swing late and you'll backhand it to the right.
If you swing with poor timing or hit a ball that's far away from your character, they'll stumble. You can shake the Wiimote to recover, but this is a chance for your opponent to hit a super shot, which is done by holding down the A button, then swinging with good timing at the incoming ball. (A "!!" mark above their head indicates that they can take a super shot.)
You can return these high-powered shots, but I was only able to do it once. They're pretty much a guaranteed point.
And that's about it. There's a single-player game in which you pick one of four characters -- a little boy, a girl, Mom, and Dad -- and play against the other three. The three arenas are a cruise ship, an outdoor table, and a sports arena. Once you're done with that, you can play some mini-games to help you practice your aim.
"Thrilling Ping-Pong" is a game mode where the number of rallies is added to your score each time you score a point, and you play to 99 points. "Target Ping-Pong" is a standard match with high-score areas on the table, and you try to aim your shots to bounce there, aiming to hit 1000 points in record time. And "Matching Ping-Pong", the most difficult of the three by far, has you hitting apples and oranges to specific places on the board.
For all its (relative) flash, there's not much to Okiraku Ping-Pong. The single player game has one difficulty setting that you'll probably clear in ten minutes. The mini-games don't provide much replay value. The two-player multiplayer will likely be the big draw, but it is not exactly feature-rich either. But it's fun! And it only has to be five bucks worth of fun to be a good investment. As such, this is one of the standout WiiWare games.
